What's really sad is that her mother is the one that drove her to her death. Her mother wanted her son to be a great star, and she was resentful that Karen was the bigger star. (Her brother loved it. he hated how they pushed him). Her mother constantly called her fat, and told her she needed to lose weight, even when she was skeletal. Her heart gave out from being malnourished.
Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.
Thank you for that enjoyable reaction. Karen was and always has been my favorite female vocal. And thank you for lifting up the name of the Lord. I completely agree, every minute we live on this earth, it's important to make the right choices, and asking God to help us do that is the beginning. God bless you and your family my friend.
The Wrecking Crew was a LEGENDARY group of studio musicians that played on almost every significant album recorded in LA in the 60s. The Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher, The Mamas and The Papas, The Monkees, you name it, they were the band on the actual recording. There is a great documentary about them available online, called "The Wrecking Crew"
Thank you for showing so much love and respect to the Carpenter's music, especially Karen. She understood what it was to overcome the bad or the sad feelings by walking through it with courage. And sometimes that means allowing the feelings to remain just long enough to make us stronger. Her poor body and mind had been through so much, and she had tried to be strong for so long. It was time for her to go Home, for reasons we will never understand. Rest In Paradise, indeed.
Yep, they last note gets me every time, one thing’s fur sure, Karen Carpenter was blessed with a beautiful voice and she knew what to did with it, and her musical genius brother Richard knew , too, so he made perfect arrangements around it!
Thank-you! That's my second favorite Carpenter song and even after listening 50 years, I still love not just this song, but all of them. So glad to see your appreciation of Karen and of that note at the end---I love that too! Maybe 'Yesterday Once More' next? :)
Karen really was truly one of a kind. My mom introduced us to her, via 8-track (Yeah I went there. Lol) when I was 9 going to/from school daily. I was devastated on 2/4/83 when they announced her passing a couple of weeks before I turned 21. If you haven't seen it already, you should check out a jazz medley she performed with none other than the incomparable Miss Ella Fitzgerald on what was to be the last Carpenters variety show called Music, Music, Music in 1980. Two STRONG WOMEN with 3 octave, contralto voices singing jazz, nothing like it! I'd love to see you react to it but do yourself a favor and listen to it anyway. Smooth! Peace, love and blessings to all. ❤
My late father was raised in New York. He passed in 2002 and would've been 100 years old in 2 months. He saw every legend you could shake a stick at. He saw Sinatra in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70''s, 80's and the 90's. My brother and I took him to the last one at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos California in 1992.. Great show by the Chairman of the Board. Without hesitation he would tell anybody the 2 best female singers he ever heard were Billie Holiday (who as a teenager my Dad would sneak in and watch Miss Holiday perform back in his youth in New York) and Karen Carpenter. Who he said had "no equal and never will". God speed Devin. I really enjoy your reactions. RNB
One of my top 3 all-time female artists....her voice was amazing. One of the Beatles ran into her at a restaurant in Los Angeles and he called his favorite female vocalist of all time...she could sing the phonebook and make it pretty
it was john lennon who came up to her and told her " I just want to tell you luv you have a fabulous voice".. paul mccartney said she had the greatest female voice in the world... "instinctful, tuneful and melodic" he added....
Aside from Karen's magnificent contralto voice, her brother Richard was a master at arranging, keyboards and especially layering lead and backing vocals. He could make Karen and himself sound like a full choir. This is beautiful, but it is melancholy.
So many forget that Richard was the genius at arranging the Carpenters music. He had the talent to make any song fit Karen's vocal talent. And all she really wanted to be was a drummer, which she also did masterfully.
Saw them in concert back in '71 (I think) at UGa. Great show. Afterwards , I stopped at a burger joint to fuel up. They were in there! I went up and chatted for a few minutes. Karen seemed a bit timid, but was sweet as sugar. Richard was also pleasant. I will always remember this interaction!
Karen was not a timid person, and she did enjoy being recognized by people when she was off stage. However she also endured stalking and so she made it a rule to be kind but brief.
Karen's voice ... this song along with "We've Only Just Begun" are an exercise in voice control. I've said before, when Autotune was invented, they used Karen's voice as their template. I miss Karen Carpenter.
Since you asked…😉 “The Wrecking Crew” was a group of first-call L.A. session musicians that played the backing tracks on hundreds (and hundreds) of huge hits from 1963-1973, for artists like The Carpenters, The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Association, Cher, The Mamas and Papas, The Monkees, and so many other musical acts throughout the 60’s and into the early 70’s. There’s no doubt that you’ve heard them on some of the songs you’ve featured on your channel…For example, Wrecking Crew members Larry Knechtel (piano), Joe Osborn (bass), and Hal Blaine (drums) played on Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, which you’ve covered in one of your episodes. 😉 Along with playing on hit records, members of The Wrecking Crew also recorded the themes for many TV shows as well - shows like Bonanza, MASH, Hawaii Five-0, The Pink Panther, just to name a few. There is a great documentary, “The Wrecking Crew”, which is currently available on UA-cam and Amazon, that tells the story of this incredible group of studio session musicians, that I think you might enjoy checking out. 😉🙏
The wrecking crew was an amazing group of musicians that played for many artists. Glen Campbell was a guitarist for them. You need to check him out. He was amazing! He passed a few years ago from Alzhiemers. He didn't even know how to read music. Great story!!!
Glen Campbell...one of the great guitar players in country. Two others were Roy Clark and Chet Atkins...check them out as well. But of the three, Glen was my favorite. He had a ton of hits. Some of my favorites are Rhinestone Cowboy, Sunflower, Southern Nights, Galveston, Try a Little Kindness, Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.), and my all-time favorite, Wichita Lineman!!
Gotta put the “Guitarman” himself Jerry Reed in that group. Helped Glen write Southern Nights, and gave Chet (Jerry’s idol) a new start by teaching him how to play his style and break him of typical chords. As well as tons of instrumentals he gave to Chet. They were each other’s favorite players eventually and Lenny Breau later on. Reed , a master at so many things…God bless them all as they created a lifetime of music to enjoy!.. Peace✌🏻
She has always been my number one female vocalist. She sounded like a melancholy angel. I think the song was saying we all have down days and that is ok.
i grew up with the carpenters and back then most teenage guys were not into their music. it wasnt cool. when she passed it devistated me, it took a long time or me to listen again to her. eventually i did ans still do now 50 yrs later. the voice of an angel now sings with the, thank god for her continued legacy to share with generations to come like you devin and for you to realize how incredibly special karen was
Exactly, as a 14 year old it just wasn't cool to say you liked the Carpenters, but Karen's voice was just so hypnotic you couldn't help but listen when one of their songs came on the radio.
I was a teenager when Karen was huge in the 70s, I also was suffering from an eating disorder, all I would do is drink water, I never touched my food, my brother just returned from California (he took off on his harley when he was 16), he figured out my eating disorder and he would take my water everytime we would sit down to eat, I know my brother saved my life!! I had a great teenage life, I constantly went to concerts, partied with people who became really famous, but I like remembering them "when" we were young and having a great time!! Phoenix was a great place to grow up in the 70s, we were there for the boom of rock and the boom of Phoenix!! I regret nothing!!
You don't need the lyrics when Karen sings, you can understand everything she says. The voice of an angel here on earth. all that while playing the drums. When you want to listen to Christmas music no ones voice fits better than Karen's. Gone way to soon, God must have needed an addition to the heavenly choir. Karen didn't step to a different octave, she would glide with no effort.
it always gives me a lift to discover another Carpenters fan as i have been for many years. You are so right about depression set mood. Certainly Karen had many good things in her young life, and yet she became very isolated in that self indulgent world of fame and fortune. She dealt too long with her problems in a hurtful way and no one knew how to help because she lived a secretive hurtful world imposed on herself in an effort to please all the big famous world. The best thing is that she impacted and still does many people with her beautiful voice that transcends time and space.
I don't know HOW MANY rainy Mondays I've come into work singing this song...😊 Devin, "The Wrecking Crew" was the name of a studio band that you have heard on a number of HIT songs for many artists like Elvis, The Monkees, etc., and included many prominent musicians that went on to be celebrities in their own rite, like Glen Campbell.
The Wrecking Crew, though not an actual band, was the nickname given to the top LA session musicians of the late sixties and early 70s. They were in the first class inducted into the Musician's Hall of Fame and performed with everyone on that era. The musicians of Toto were their successors in the late 70s and 80s and were inducted into the third class of the MHF.
When you listen to her in this particular song you hear what she is saying. I have bipolar disorder and I know what depression sounds like. What an Angel who did not know how perfect she was...
Saw her in 1972 .Her best songs ? Solitaire and Trying to get the Feeling again(released in 1993 )---her Singing and drumming thru Help and the Burt Bacharach Medley. Duets on you tube ? Karen and John Denver,Ella Fitzgerald ,Perry Como ,Andy Williams and Doug Strawn (Cinderella Rockafella )
God bless you for your willingness to state God's Word. Im on my 60s, so remember KC very well on the radio and TV specials. Amazing, but predictable how 99% of You Tube reactions are similar to yours. They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she received 4 grammys. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. KC's voice was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, gimmicks, or screaming. Sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice made you listen to her. She had no professional voice training. She never knew true love, nor how good she really was. She was never happy with way she looked. She had serious onset of anorexia in 1975. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia.
The Wrecking Crew was a group of studio musicians in LA who played on hundreds of if not thousands of hits in the 70's from The Beach Boys To Sonny & Cher to Frank Sinatra. There's a great documentary about them. There's also a great documentary, Standing In the Shadows of Motown about the Funk Brothers who were the studio musicians for countless Motown records.
Devin I'm a new subscriber and I'm so happy I came across your videos! You're so entertaining and the inspiring devotionals at the end of your videos is pure Gold! Keep it up!! ✨👍👍👍 #LovetheCarpenters ❤️❤️❤️
You're so right about the value of relationships. They are a garden that we must "tend to". If we don't tend to them, those gardens can become dry/barren. If we tend to our relationships, ,they can continue to remain healthy/beautiful. I lost an important relationship, because I didn't "tend to" it. We can't take them for granted.
Thx! The wrecking crew were the most used session musicians ever! They are in almost every hit on record! They remained unsung and anonymous until guitarist Tommy Tedesco’s son made a dvd about them!
Devin, if my memory serves me right, I believe the Wrecking Crew were a group of LA musician’s that played back ground music for many well known singers. I could be wrong, they may have played for Elvis, at my age… LOL My favorite Carpenters song, Close to you.
Just a thought, because I know it to be true ... songs like this are actually therapeutic to people experiencing melancholy feelings, which this song exemplifies perfectly. I speak from experience when I tell you, whenever I was feeling down, James Taylor was my go-to guy, because he sang about the same or similar things I was going through. Singing along with him to those songs made me feel sort of like I was, well, let's just say, "confessing", and BECAUSE of him, I got it out in the open, audibly. That made me feel like I was not alone ... because I knew then, someone else had already charted that course, before me, that they had made it through ok, and that meant that I could make it too. I could see a light at the end of the tunnel but, I knew though, it wasn't an oncoming train. Now, I KNOW you believe that God gave us obstacles to overcome, but I also believe, he gave us the tools to deal with them. To me, people doing sad songs sometimes, is 1 of those tools we've been given, to help us cope with those issues, and to KNOW, as YOU say, it's GOING to get better.
Devin, you need to try "The Man That Got Away" sung by Judy Garland in "A Star Is Born" (1954). Garland was the 20th century's single greatest performer: singer, dancer, dramatic actress, comedienne. Give her a try.
Its so difficult to pick one voice as the ultimate as many were unique in their own ways. Karen, Barbara Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-frid Lyngstad, Dusty Springfield. Rather than rank them better to apprieciate the qualities each had and feel hoy from their great music
Crying crying here Devin....u both touch my heart...I have to get in touch with God more. I have been suicidal ever since my 38 yr old sister died, hospitals fault. And it's been 15 years....I just want to be with her.
Your very kind. I really appreciate you and your positive feedback' She died very from Anorexia I miss ber, God Bless you and positive feedback. She almost recording under 3 takes. Keep up your kind and positive for everone
I believe when you refer to that Wrecking Crew I believe that's what they called this studio band that sat in on a lot of big hits by a lot of different groups I'm pretty sure if you check on the wrecking crew that that's what you'll find out it is I'm pretty certain of this although I haven't checked in a while but I even used to know who they all were but I wouldn't have a clue anymore.
The Carpenters and especially KC is my favourite singer of all time and I just wanted to ask if you already knew that she played drums and in this video in particular because you said nothing, but I guess that would happen as you were watching everything except the screen. That's if you were watching a screen or listening because it sure didn't look like you were paying any attention to the video, so my apologies if watching the video is not your thing.
Karen Carpenter was a singer whose voice could stop you in your tracks, but her real passion was drumming. if you want to see her truly in her element as a drummer, check out her 1976 drum solo video: ua-cam.com/video/ie1WWWOxhMs/v-deo.html
All of my Carpenters reactions - bit.ly/3JSb2Bo
Would be nice if you could listen to a song without filtering it through your christian brainwash....
Sounds like you need some religion and your life
What's really sad is that her mother is the one that drove her to her death. Her mother wanted her son to be a great star, and she was resentful that Karen was the bigger star. (Her brother loved it. he hated how they pushed him).
Her mother constantly called her fat, and told her she needed to lose weight, even when she was skeletal. Her heart gave out from being malnourished.
Frank Sinatra said that Karen Carpenter was the only female singer he would pay to see. thank you great reaction.
Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. Thanks for that...hope he just starts doing any song!!!
Only yesterday love love love.
Her voice was incredible!
Thank you for that enjoyable reaction. Karen was and always has been my favorite female vocal. And thank you for lifting up the name of the Lord. Simply the best female singer I've ever heard period

You hit it correct...Karen has the best female voice ever!!
Facts
Paul McCartney said she as got the best voice in the world.
There will never be another Karen Carpenter or anyone even close to her voice! There’s no one to compare her to!
I totally agree.
Best Female voice ever.
The best Forever KAREN
Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt are contenders, for sure.
Thank you for appreciating her. Such an effortless, natural, graceful talent.
Some other great carpenters songs are: Sing
Won’t Last a Day Without You
Yesterday Once More
Happy
Road Ode
All You Get From Love is a Love Song
She was the best female vocalist of all time. :)
She was also one of the best drummers of her time. One of her nicknames was "One Take Karen".
I saw them in live concert in the mid-1970s and it was amazing. She actually sounded better live than on her records.
The most natural singer. Nothing forced...purity defined.
I think really the song is appreciating “the one who loves me” so really it’s subscribing to your positive vibe .
My late father was raised in New York. He passed in 2002 and would've been 100 years old in 2 months. He saw every legend you could shake a stick at. Love your enthusiasm God bless you love you
Smooth, velvety voice of Karen Carpenter.
Rest well Ms. Carpenter. ❤️❤️

@@tomschmitz261 and sadly, she believed he was mocking her.
A voice as smooth as silk, liquid gold! Easily one of the best female voices of all time

Absolutely agree with you. Miss her perfect voice and tone.
That song was out when I got married so we used it for our dance!
She's #1 in my book. Lucky enough to see her when I was just 12 years old (1973) in Portland, Maine, and that concert has never been topped.
If you know by the first note who is singing, that's a legend
Since you asked…😉

Absolutely magical. An angel's voice indeed. Such a shame she went way too soon.
She has always been my number one female vocalist. She sounded like a melancholy angel. I think the song was saying we all have down days and that is ok.
The best of the best, KC set the bar too high.
Karen is definitely the best imo.
Rainy days and Mondays do not matter as long as the Carpenters are singing!
Yes Please do SING by Carpenters Live from Japan show 1974 and FOR ALL WE KNOW !!
As u can see she was an accomplished drummer
No one can beat Karen Carpenter...no one comes close to an angel like her...UNMISTAKABLE VOICE...ONE TAKE KAREN...THE WORLD STILL LISTENING TO HER.

Pure. Calming. Spiritual. She still can make me smile, make me cry and strengthen my faith because her voice is spiritual.
You should really listen to her song, Top of the World. Very upbeat, happy song.

Truth Goodness and Beauty. We are drawn to it because it's what we come from and what we are meant for. It's our beginning and end.

Whether she was the best or not, one thing can't be argued, she was one of a kind. She was in a group of one.
I love that you will pull out some Carpenters. Her voice is insane. I've listened to her most of my life thanks to having a Mom that loved music.

Devin I'm a new subscriber and I'm so happy I came across your videos! You're so entertaining and the inspiring devotionals at the end of your videos is pure Gold! Keep it up!! ✨👍👍👍
#LovetheCarpenters ❤️❤️❤️
I myself believe that this is if not the most emotional songs she done. You can just feel her pain.
You have a great heart. God bless you
Thx! The wrecking crew were the most used session musicians ever! They are in almost every hit on record! They remained unsung and anonymous until guitarist Tommy Tedesco’s son made a dvd about them!
Devin, I agree
1971
Thank you for sharing this with me today 😊
Carpenters/Desperado studio version
I believe there is a fantastic documentary about “the wrecking crew.” They were legendary musicians.
Just amazing
Devin, if my memory serves me right, I believe the Wrecking Crew were a group of LA musician’s that played back ground music for many well known singers. I could be wrong, they may have played for Elvis, at my age…
LOL My favorite Carpenters song, Close to you.
Macho men cry when the Carpenters play!
Carpenters were the best, I highly recommend the live version of the song I need to be in love, there is a fantastic live version on you tube.
mans dancing to this hahahaha
It’s my understanding she was a drummer before a singer. The en they realized how good she was at singing. Thank goodness. Lol
Crying crying here Devin....u both touch my heart...I have to get in touch with God more. I have been suicidal ever since my 38 yr old sister died, hospitals fault. And it's been 15 years....I just want to be with her.
I have to agree with you on the voice. Her and Stevie nicks are my top two
And love ya Devin.
She is always number one in my opinion.

There will never be another voice like Karen's!!!!
☮️💙💙💙
Great sister and brother group. Karen passed away from a heart attack that came from anorexia. A beautiful voice silenced to early.
Karen is the absolute best singer ever...bar none!
"Run to Someone Who loves me" ❤️
Luv Luv Luv ❤❤❤❤😊
Listen to her sing masquerade
It always feels like Karen is singing about the things from her own life.
You need to know about The Wrecking Crew who played on more hits than any other group including most of The Beach Boys hits
For me Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline are the best female vocalist ever. I hope you react to Patsy Cline one day. Have a blessed day.
