That would be wonderful to spend a whole day with an owl. Can't get much better than that.

Wow what an incredible day you had with the GGO. Some great video footage and some excellent images. I have had some of the same experiences with Barred Owls and with Great Horned Owls but I have never been lucky enough to even see a GGO. I do have a trip planned for the spring in 2025 so I am hoping to have a lucky day. I have found that Barred Owls are really tolerant of people as well but not the Great Horned Owls. Thanks for sharing your special day and have a great week!!

Thank you, Keith! It really was a fantastic day and yielded some wonderful photo opportunities. I don't have much experience with Barred Owls, but from what I do have, I've noticed the same thing. Great Horned Owls are much like Great Grays in my experience. Some individuals couldn't care less with me hanging around and will let me stay with them all day, others need a bit more space to feel comfortable. I hope you have a successful spring with the Great Grays, they're definitely worth the time and energy!

Thanks a bunch, Tony. Yes, they're fantastic. I have to travel a ways to get to their territory to start looking, but I'm sure they're closer to me than they are to you 🥴 beautiful birds for sure!

Great video again Jimmy, no GGO in my region so far this winter. I had a few opportunities to photograph a Northern Hawk Owl lately, a magnificient and very quick owl that hunts during the day.

Thank you! Keep your eyes peeled, depending on the weather they can move around quite a bit this time of year. Wow, that's awesome, I've never photographed a Northern Hawk Owl, definitely high on the list! Keep it up, happy adventures!

Fabulous encounter, Jimmy! I had to look 10 times before i saw the great grey in the shadow where you teased if we could see it. Did you notice like some kind of a string or wire or rope hanging in the front right side of the bird in the morning? I see something, but no idea what it is. Grass? Super photography. Thanks for taking us along and showing how it is done.

Thanks a bunch, Ott! 😁 I almost didn't see him myself when he was in those shadows, so I thought a little clip of that in the video would be fun. Yeah, he had a long piece of grass or something dangling from him all morning. I was so tempted to reach up and grab it when he landed above me, but I resisted 😆

When owls catch a prey in the grass, they will very often get some grass along with the animal. And when they swallow the prey whole like they do most of the times, grass can get stuck in their beak or even mouth. It can take a while for them to get rid of this, hours or days. I have a lot of pictures of Barred Owls with grass or twigs hanging from their beaks. They often don't mind too much about them.

@@michelrochon-ti4817 Thanks for this insight. I have photographed any owl species just 3 times in my whole life (hard to find), so this behaviour is something that my little experience has never taught me.

I have the good fortune to live very close to a place where lots of barred owls live (and breed) all year round.

Thanks so much, sure appreciate it! I'm pretty much using the R5 for everything these days since I got the Canon 100-500mm RF. I miss the 1DXii at times, but it's more convenient for me to just carry one body.

@@JimmyBreitensteinright. i switched from r5 to r3 because of the body. i love the pro body and its feeling so much. sadly not 45 mpx now but lets be honest...u can take even great shots with 18 mpx like the 1dx got. i used it for over 8 years and got the best shots ever. keep up your great work! best regards!

@gggg-xq9qq I totally get it. I got to use the R3 for a bit this year and it was outstanding. Guess I need to start saving my pennies 😆 Thanks for the feedback, always appreciated!
