The Ajanta Caves are approximately 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotions through gesture, pose and form.
They are universally regarded as masterpieces of Buddhist religious art. The caves were built in two phases, the first starting around the 2nd century BCE and the second occurring from 400 to 650 CE, according to older accounts, or in a brief period of 460-480 CE according to later scholarship. The site is a protected monument in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India,[and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Caves were the earliest shelters for human habitation. It was thus natural that humans subsequently copied and created elaborate cave systems like the Ajanta Caves. Perhaps one of the most recognized architectural structure of it’s kind in the world.
This episode explores the architectural masterpiece and the science behind it. The human spirit that chiseled this basalt mountain with hand made tools. And the aesthetics that survived the ravages of time.
The Ajanta Caves are 30 Buddhist rock-cut temples and monasteries set along horseshoe shaped river gorge. The caves were built between 2nd century BC and 5th century AD. The paintings and sculptures in Ajanta are considered masterpieces of the Buddhist art and Ajanta is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bus takes around 3 hrs to reach Ajanta. It's a local bus so there are multiple stops in between.

For ajanta, there are multiple buses which leaves from Aurangabad bus depot.
If you are going directly to the bus stop without prior booking then i would suggest you to go as early as possible.

No. You can take any bus from Aurangabad which is going to jalgaon. They will drop you at Ajanta gate.

Shuttle bus service is tooooo.... much, just for 3 kms I pay Rs. 30, even for 8 year child.
It is best to have tea, tiffin at shopping plaza instead of canteen. Canteen charges Rs. 30 for a cup of Tea. What may be for other food?
