Michael was a native Texan and never could get rid of his twang. He wrote and sang quite a few of the Monkees' songs, or sometimes Micky would sing lead on Michael's songs (The Girl I Knew Somewhere and Daily Nightly). He had a prolific solo career after the Monkees, genres ranging from bluegrass and country rock to soft jazz and new age. He was always experimenting and trying new things. He also produced movies and wrote books, and had his own TV series on NBC in the mid-1980s. His Monkees songs tended to have a country-rock feel (he is considered one of the pioneers of country rock), so they even stand up today; they are not dated, don't sound like a lot '60s songs. Glad you liked this and Michael's voice - he was a great, versatile singer - check out Magnolia Simms and Love is Only Sleeping for different sounds! Michael's voice always reminds me of slipping on your favorite pair of old comfy jeans, aahhhhh!
Michael Nesmith was the one who actually created country rock music. On the first Monkees album 1966 it has the very first examples of what would be coined as country rock. Check out Sweet Young Thing. It's a mix of hard thumping rock and with a country voicing. It's great!
The Monkees were artist of the year in 1967 and hold the record for the fastest three number one albums and the fastest four number one albums.
Mike was a country guy at heart and when the Monkees broke up in the 70s he went country in his solo stuff. Also he wrote this song too.
@tenchisaotome Great song by the way! I should've appreciated him more in the group.
Very happy you did this one!
"Papa Gene's Blues" is another unique Monkee's tune by him and, of course, "Mary, Mary" which was later covered by Run DMC.
Michael Nesmith was raised in Texas by a single mom. She did invent Liquid Paper and was wealthy but Michael had to make his own way, financially, in adulthood and did not receive money from her estate until she died in 1980. He was in the air force before moving to California in pursuit of a career as a singer-songwriter in the 1960s.
@dotmoon3448 Thank you for that information. I love it when I know more about a band and the struggles they go through for fame.
"What am I doing hanging around" ‼️🔥‼️
you should also react to his song "Joanne". a perfect country-rock song.
@roydownes3458 I will definitely look into that as well! Thank you!
@@menoftomorrowchannel *tips hat* :)
@@roydownes2458 Thank you so much!
If I remember correctly, Michael is an East Texas Boy that came west as a musician.
Michael Nesmith's mother invented Liquid Paper and became very wealthy. I remember how secretaries loved using it to remove a typo. Before Liquid Paper, the only way to remove a typo was to retype everything. BTW, Nesmith wrote a few songs like Mary Mary and he was lead singer of Listen to the Band.
@MrPeterprinciple Thank you for the info! Did not know he wrote some of the songs.
Before The Monkees, Mike released a few singles and wrote songs for others. Notably, Mary Mary was released by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band BEFORE the Monkees released their version.
Well, I have quite a bit of music by 'The Monkees' and I have always thought that Mike Nesmith had an interesting voice, distinctly different than the others in the group. Mike was well off because his mother invented liquid paper, (aka white out). Mike also wrote a popular song back in the 60's for a band called 'The Stone Poneys', titled "Different Drum". His other songs with 'The Monkees' include, "What am I Doing Hangin Round", "Papa Gene's Blues", "Sweet Young Thing" and "Listen To The Band". Thanks for this reaction!
@seiraeiramasil2302 Thank you for the information! I always learn something new through the comments!
@@menoftomorrowchannel Glad I could help.
@@seiraeiramasil2302 😁😁
The other big one Mike sung on the show was What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round. He wrote it too. Mike had the only big solo hit with a song called Joanne.
@debjorgo Okay, I will have to look more into mike as a solo performer. I just thought they did group stuff.
@@menoftomorrowchannel Michael Nesmith had a hit with Joanne, and lesser hits with Silver Moon, Some of Shelly's Blues, Rio and Cruisin'. I forgot to mention his song, Papa Gene's Blues with the Monkees.
Michael Nesmith is one of the innovators of country rock and received the first ever Grammy for a music video.
Wow! That is interesting! Thank you for the info!
mike's mom invented liquid paper (its like white out) but that was after the monkees thats why he hardly participated in the reunions because he could afford doing other personal projects of his!
The two primary singers were Mike Nesmith and micky dolenz
After the Monkeys Mike returned to his country roots
Love this song 🔥‼️
Have you heard "what am I doing hanging around"
Mike was from Texas. 🎬
Check out "Oh my, my" GREAT TUNE!!!
Thank you, and I will!
You remember Pleasant Valley Sunday, Last Train To Clarksville and Daydream Believer when I found this tune on UA-cam don't ever remember hearing this one But now adding to my karaoke list it's really far away and different and ya noticed a kind of country twang to it well said T
Beautiful song
It’s okay. Certain songs have certain moments that are worth hearing a second or third time. I do the same thing.
Listen to their greatest hit album. Youll love it
