Thank you for showing someone who is actually LEARNING instead of just an already accomplished flip-turner!!! I learned more by watching her than i did in three other videos showing swimmers doing it smoothly! Good job, Mariana - you inspired me!
I love how you used footage of an actual swimmer learning the flip turn for the first time It gives us a relatable perspective as opposed to an already professional demontrating it to us She did amazing 🙌🏻💖
(I coach Masters) One of the most important steps in the flip turn I see novices neglect, and coaches neglect to mention, is throwing water up over the head. This accelerates the tumble and places the hands above the head, prepared for streamline. My coach, decades ago, referred to this move as "splashing cold water from a sink onto the face." It's difficult to describe but you can see the author do it here at 0:50 and again at 1:53. Rather, I see amateurs and even Masters level swimmers who started swimming as adults, put the arms out wide like airplane wings and twirl them in an effort to tumble at the wall. The author here does the maneuver well but never mentions that he is doing it in the video.
Atleast someone cares about the breathing parts, almost every flip turn video forgets about this essential thing. Thanks for mainly talking about this, helps a lot :) .
I am really slow on my team. One of the slowest. This really helps me because I am one of the fastest on my team for freestyle. I use to miss the wall and not even be able to do a flipturn. Thank you this really helps.
Had never done a flip turn in my life, nailed it on my first attempt after watching this video. I still need to work on speeding up the turn but am getting there. You are a good teacher thank u so much for posting this
Your tutorial is brilliant. The flip turn is divided into smaller parts and and you explain and Marianne practises. Easy to grasp. After watching your video five times, I went to a swimming hall and followed the steps and I managed to do it. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this vídeo. I am 34 years old and had never swimmed in my life. It’s been full 6 months 3x a week and I just learned the flip turn in one day following these steps :D
Good luck guys, it took me almost 2 years to learn to flip turn properly, it takes a lot of courage and patience and endurance and effort, but trust me guys, keep working at it, it is so worth it :)))
One trick that is older than me, and dirt, is a small dolphin kick to help initiate the flip. Only video that mentioned it was by a trathlete trainer.... Of course when I told the lifeguards at my pool about that, most of them were like "you really never knew that????"
Very, very good tutorial. I noticed the girl maybe learning it - well - over the session. This has given me a lot of confidence and given me a sense of the time it can take to learn; as I've been putting-off trying to accquire this skill.
To be honest, i swim and my head is up of the water , but from seeing video's in this channel for 1 month , am now much faster and faster and faaaster than before , thank you very much , my life is changed after swimming everyday and learning from you guys ^^
I took an enormous time to learn this skill. The reason behind was, I practiced this always without a nose clip and ended up with lot of water inside my nostrils. I would highly recommend this to practice with a nose clip on and once you reached at a comfortable point after learning remove the nose clips. This will help for sure. 👍 video !
This is a great video. It was really nice to see an inexperienced swimmer going through the process. It can be intimidating for people to see top level swimmers with many years of high level coaching under their belts doing tutorials. I have been swim coaching and teaching for 17 years and love the simplicity demonstrated breaking the turn down to 3 easy steps. I do have a couple of tips for those who are getting water in their nose and ears. To stop water going up your nose you can either 1. Use a nose clip (I find them uncomfortable as i like to exhale through my nose when swimming), 2. Blow air out your nose during the turn, 3. Hum (you use less air humming compared with blowing air out your nose), or 4. Now this one isnt for everyone, but its what i and a good deal of experienced swimmers do. You cover your nose with your upper lip causing like a suction seal. You dont need big lips - in fact I had to teach my lip how to do it, but it works!. For those getting water in their ears, check that your cap is on properly and is comfortably covering your ears before starting your swim. Use ear plugs (after trying several different types unsuccessfully, I use blue tac). If you don't like ear plugs, then using an oil based swimmers ear drop before you swim wont stop the water going in, but it will protect the ear and help to get the water out later. A lot of people jump around to get the water out, but the best method i have found is to slowly tilt your head to the left then the right a few times.
I’m not a professional yet but getting there and the sense of satisfaction when I get it right is great! I know really look forward to reaching the flip turn 👍
listen i’ve got two hours until the county meet and my flip turns have cost me so much time so here i am last minute EDIT: OH MY GOSH ARE YOU SERIOUS? ONE TUTORIAL AND I THINK I FOUND MY PROBLEM ALREADY. IVE BEEN LANDING WEIRD AND SHOOTING MYSELF SIDEWAYS 😭 EDIT 2: i literally can’t thank you enough for this video, i was able to win my event because i caught up with a good flip turn i’m shook
It is nice to also see some amateurs illustrating things. It makes us feel not stupid and things. Well explained and beautifully made. More slow-mo with explanations in videos, maybe? It's easier to digest, then, I think. But I should of course simply re-watch video a couple of times and pause, etc., but I don't have the patience for that. Really nice when videos are short and concise also! :)
If you watch it on a computer the < and > keys adjust playback speed, the space bar pauses and the , and . keys allow you to go forwards and backwards frame by frame.
This is a great video. It helped a lot to see both the movements of the expert and of the beginner. And, as you say, I got the basics going in an hour of practice, starting from zero. Thanks a lot.
I love your channel. so useful for me. also the way you make videos ,music you choose for every video , even its time is so perfect and good.wish you the best !
After months of practicing and almost giving up, what helped me most was the advice of another flip turn video: to make the flip only with your head. Since I only concentrate on my head rolling down now everything else goes automatically and I wonder why I thought the flip turn was so hard to do...
Mano, no sabia que hablabas inglés...he visto un gran grupo de tus video en español y los he ido aplicando. Son muy buenos todos, felicidades. Probaré estas técnicas, pues al dia de hoy aun no he intentado hacer este giro. Saludos
Excellent video. After.many years , finally I can do the flip. Now, i have noticed that doing the flip during my swimming, i get very tired. After my 4th lap , and doing the flip, i am completely exhausted, and without doing the flip ( but without stoping ) , i can do a lot more Is this normal, or is just because I am not used to do the flip ?
I think we really need a more detailed guide/tip on how to land our feet properly. You did mention try not to land the feet too high or too low, but didn't tell how we can fix it (except constant training I guess?), or any tip for the timing/hand. I learned more about the flip turn recently and now I'm so obsessed with it. I practice by myself about 7-8 times, at least 1h each and the best I could do was just a decent one, not able to do it in an actual swimming lap yet. Thank you a lot coach :)
I'm trying to do flip turn for the past 5 days, and haven't learned yet! And one of my swimmer never did flip turn in his life and he did in his 4th attempt lol!
Gracias thanks !! Así mismo lo practicar y listo en media hora me salió !😍😍😍 saludos y gracias siempre por los buenos consejos y una gran sorpresa que lo nsrraste en inglés felicidades 👍😁😁
Very much helpful I found the problem I was flipping to early sometimes and other time to late and then all the time I was kicking downwards when landing
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I tried it and every time I turn around, I feel dizzy, so much so that it disorients me. What am i doing wrong? Thank you!!!
You might have to do it slow at first or maybe practice just one o two times and then come back the next day and do it again until your body gets used to it
I remember wanting to nail this. I dedicated a morning to it but gave up as every time I flipped - water entered my nose (very unpleasant), so I gave up. I’m sure I blew out through my nose but hey I’ll try again. Maybe I’ll try a nose ring too … thanks

I think he speaks to it at 1:09
this comment helped me learn the flip turn today, in just a few tries. thank you!
I describe it as doing a bicep curl while tucking your chin.
Holy crap, I was a competitive swimmer for 7 years and I have literally never heard anyone talk about this

I can alrdy feel the water shooting up my nose lol
I think you need to blow while flipping
Right 😂
Yeni Berry just blow bubbles with your nose, don’t worry tho that used to be me as a beginner no matter how hard I tried 😂
Haha,u can use nose clip honey,so the water will not enter in your nose
As you flip, blow out. When I learn my coach had me just stay at the wall and flip find threshold to blow out
Best swimming technique channel on UA-cam!
Thank you!

Thank you! I absolutely love doing flip turns because it is so calming.
Great video, by far the hardest part for me still is getting the timing right and not blowing all of my air as I flip through. Thanks for posting.
Me too. I cracked my toes on the wall once..
Thank you very much! I am a beginner swimmer who learns from your videos, and today I did the flip turn corectly 🌹
Just watching this video reminds me how much I miss swimming everyday. I loved doing freestyle flips! So much fun.
