  • Thirty years after terrorism first struck the World Trade Center, survivors, victims' relatives and first responders gathered to remember the deadly 1993 bombing that foreshadowed the September 11 attacks.
    The explosion in an underground parking garage killed six people, including a pregnant woman. More than 1,000 people were injured. Tens of thousands fled in a harrowing evacuation that highlighted the challenges of clearing out some of the world’s tallest buildings in a fiery emergency. The blast also served as a warning of Islamic extremists’ yearning to destroy the trade center’s twin towers.

    As a German who was almost 4 years old when 9/11 happened, I never knew about the 1993 bombing until I heard Biggie Smalls rap something along the lines of "blow up like the world trade" in one of his songs. I knew that he was dead by 9/11 so I did some research because I was pretty sure that he couldn't have predicted the future.
    It's also so intriguing to see how people helped or tried to comfort one another in the aftermath of 9/11. I doubt that the same thing would have happened in Germany, at least not in this scale.

      I Googled those lyrics one day many years ago outta curiosity since I knew Biggie died roughly 4.5 years before 9/11, before that I didn't even know about the original 1993 bombing attack.

      Yes they were trying to drag America in a lot sooner in 1993 and the consequence of the recession that they were trying to exploit and over exaggerate. They were probably using Iraq as the smokescreen as it happened in 2003. US was lucky to dodge out while it much less prepared after being last iconic autarkic power left no question.

      @@Mimi-hn6iv The plan was to topple the north tower over into the south tower. Considering the time of day, the buildings would have been full and there would have been no time to react and evacuate. Had the van been parked about 20 feet closer to the foundation, the plan would have succeeded.

    • @coreyrowe4119
      @coreyrowe4119 8 місяців тому +3

      @@Mimi-hn6iv the 1993 bombing attack happened much later in the day when both towers were relatively full opposed to 9/11 happening early in the morning before everybody reported to work for the day. If the attackers plan (to have the bomb's explosion collapse 1 tower into the other) had come to fruition everybody in both towers would've been dead right then and there since there would've been pretty much no chance for any kind of evacuation. Many other bystanders on the street and in other surrounding buildings likely would've been killed as well depending on where the falling towers may have landed. It's honestly scary thinking about how many could've potentially died that day. As bad as 9/11 truly was the 1993 attack would've been far more deadly had it fully succeeded.

    • @verspin
      @verspin 22 дні тому

      @@TheBurgerrKing Was it really this close? Gosh. Can't imagine an alternate reality where 9/11 wouldn't happen but we would still have to witness the towers falling down. I bet we would get much less footage of that event too

      @@mrandrossguy9871 Actually yeah, most New Yorkers hated the design of them before 9/11, but it wasn't the cause of 9/11 ( obvious sarcasm ). An architecture critic in the 1960s remarked that the buildings looked like the boxes that the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building came in, which was a spot-on observation. But to be fair, pretty much all post-war architecture was aesthetically soulless, not just them.

      Biggie actually referenced this attack in a song. It was in arguably his biggest song ever "Juicy", he said "time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade". Nobody made a big deal about it when he released that song in late 1994 (well over a year after the 1993 bombing of the WTC) but I have a feeling that kind of line would've gotten him in trouble if released today.
