The Barbie one as usual is well detailed, culturally accurate down to hair ribbon. They also use roses but there's enough of the holiday flower the marigold that they don't feel like an after thought. The rainbow high dress is so inaccurate to the culture, the holiday or even the region it's based on, the flamenco dress is Spanish dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday. It feels like the deepest research they did on the holiday was Pinterest or Instagram. There's more thought put into the box than into the actual doll which is a shame considering how cool a dia de Los Muertos doll with rainbow high quality could have been.
As a Latina I feel like the Mattel dolls are more culturally accurate. I bought the Ken and the Mattel creations exclusive Dia de Los Muertos Barbie. I do want the RH one because I do love skulls just not a fan of The lack of research when designing her& giving her a stereotypical name.

My bf is Hispanic, so from what I have learned in school and from experience with his family/culture I would say the Barbie and Ken outfits are more culturally accurate. Although they lack details like articulation and fabric accessories like the RH doll. So imo it just depends on whether you want cultural accuracy or a high quality doll.
Thanks for doing this! I think that the Rainbow High doll's dress is not true to Mexican culture, but it is absolutely gorgeous! Love the 3-d roses and her boots! The Barbie and Ken are nicely detailed, and I especially love the skin tone on the Barbie.

The orange flower is called “cempasúchil” in nahuatl (the ancient language of the mexica). It means “twenty flowers”. 😊
I think the Barbie version is so amazing!! On the other hand, I feel like MGA rushed their version out just to compete. I feel like they could’ve done so many different colors for Maria’s dress. They played it safe, but I can appreciate how her sombrero is made out of real material. With how well the Chinese New Year doll did, I expected MGA to go further and blow us all away. Instead they have a muddled mess on their hands.
I find it funny that after the complaints about roses vs marigolds they put a marigold on the outside of the box like... HERE, FINE!

The design of RH's costume was very controversial, but I really don't understand why, the artisan catrinas made with the paper mache technique wear very similar mermaid dresses.
Such beautiful dolls! 🌹💀🌹 It is a shame Mattel makes a consumer spend $80 on a doll with NO articulation.

So jealous!! They are beautiful! I LOVE the Rainbow high doll the most! I wish I could get her.....next time I will. The Barbie and Ken looks great too, though I kind of liked last year Barbie more. I was able to buy last year Dia de los Muertos Barbie this year so that I can have one of my own.😊
