    It's amazing how a railway's infrastructure can disappear completely over the matter of 80-100 years. Love the merging in of the old photos, it really gives an indication of how much has changed since the railway was functional and how much nature has reclaimed these sites (obviously the infilling was man made, but the rest).

    Amazing it’s filled in a lot of gaps I could not visualise, the lay overs brilliant yet again. What a shame it’s still not in use. My daughter works in that unit by the air vent, think they saw you there. All that’s hidden on farm land unbelievable, can’t wait for the final episode of The Leeds New Line! It’s been a great blog. 👍🏻😎

    As ever Darren great video and the drone use at the end was great. When I used to do service 205 dews to pudsey I often wondered what the land was on Asquith Avenue(the woods after m621 bridge) . It was interesting to see the private land as its a point of interest on a quiet day when having swapped depots I now do the 229 on Geldard road!!! It's worth noting I came across a family doing a video down by the portal on UA-cam , and in a modern day drain and manhole nearby, as they seemed to be a bit bored during lock down!!! . Very responsible of you and the lads though. As I said in the last one, this entire route has been "treated" very badly, just this line alone could have made a massive environmental difference (ie car/van/bus/truck emissions) now. Its a scandalous waste of lives (construction workers initially but ours today re the air) & money as they have just been abandoned. I'm still fascinated to know via possibly a Freedom of Information request as to what are the costs just here in West Yorkshire on the upkeep of the abutments😆, bridges, tunnels, portals, and those access chimneys in Morley, it must run into hundreds of thousands each year! Don't get me wrong some lines perhaps should have been closed but only mothballed as they appear to down South. The staggering short sightedness of the Councils, local MPs, transport bodies, Ministry for Transport, Department of the Environment not to mention of course British Railways, I think needs investigating, as this infrastructure whilst not being used for its purpose is still prescient in todays world as your fascinating videos have shown, as trails but also dangerous places, of play, vandalism etc, its so poignant watching your productions . Ive seen a "train simulator" also on youtube relating to the new line made by a supporter of it which is of great interest. I'm amazed no one has mentioned the pollution side as you showed in the portal either and what's happening. I saw another lad talking about Queensbury and its, tunnel and one particular bridge on UA-cam which cost £35000 in 18something, in todays money that's £3.2million!, and of course it needs to be maintained that's very sobering.
    As ever great video. I look forward to the next one. Best wishes, Ben & (mini adventure me) poppy. 🚍🚌🙏🦄

    Great to see you were able to get right up to the tunnel. I think you were very wise not to go inside though. Seen on youtube how deep the sludge is in there and the toxic air would not make it a good place to be overcome by fumes, as you pointed out in the last part there are vents on the landfill at the far end because of the material used to fill in the cutting there. I remember the No 1 vent shaft being visible from the bus years ago and think it must of been capped soon after the line closed as thats how I remember it then.

    • @andrewripley7461
      @andrewripley7461 3 роки тому

      The ochre in the water coming out of the portal and the smell of sulphur/ rotten eggs possibly indicates that water from some of the mines that operated in the area of the tunnel are leaking into it. The Coal Authority mapping shows rather a lot of them and most of the area with known mine workings that predate the tunnel.

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam 3 роки тому

      @@andrewripley7461 That's right There were numerous mines in this area and before the fields near my home were open cast holes appeared from time to time where the mines had collapsed. When the nearby by pass was built a mine was cut into and still had tallow candles on a pit prop. Apart from that industrial waste was tipped in the cutting after the tunnel was blocked when the motorway was built. This produced methane gas which will also leak into the tunnel. There used to be a hut with a vent on the roof which was automatically ignited to burn off the gas at the other area the industrial waste was tipped

      It was. The Trans- Pennine used this line and the stopping trains the line that remains. Now they are wanting to put extra lines in because the Trans-Pennine Express gets delayed by local stopping trains. If only they had kept this line open.

    • @kennethstill5945

      The Trans Pennine units were ahead of the times in 1961 ( Hull -Liverpool twice each way ) They had a Griddle car in the middle initially which was later removed to increase acceleration. Class forties also hauled the Manchester - Liverpool - Manchester 10 coach trains this way from Jan. ‘61.
      The line was created in the 19th century due the vast amount of traffic that existed between Manchester and Leeds-- sad loss!

    Suggestion for a new subject, as I've been passed (&read previously about) the line running between brighouse, bailiff Bridge and over towards the still in use line near bluebell woods. This is the one with the cut off viaduct adjacent to the a58. There are also abutments coming down from Clifton (228 route 🚍🚌). My mum and dad visited brighouse tescos today and also the adjacent park where they said they could see some walls, infrastructure too. There's also the viaduct off the "Ford" Road (Jay House Lane I think)
    Come back home soon, and keep in Yorkshire! Be careful. Best wishes. Ben 🚌🚍🙏

      @@jasinere35 Hi, that's very interesting, is that a general rule about access, the landowner can only advise you against it? I say this because, as someone who also likes to visit these structures, many times I have been trying to get to a tunnel and found a raging landowner attempting to block my way.

    How is a farmer, or any private person, permitted to own a tunnel portal and a track bed? Even one that is disused.

      I live on the estate just over the motorway and go down to portal quite regular but ive never seen a sign saying private land anywhere apart from where the woods breaks out into the field about 200 yds from the portal. Theres always loads of kids and people walking in those woods on a nice day.

      DfT care of (Highways England) are responsible for the tunnel. The Farmer owns the land from part of Deans Wood, behind the Northern portal down to Rooms Lane Bridge. You would have to cross over his land to gain access to the Tunnel Portal, that's why we included a request not to trespass on his land, in the video. Obviously Darren, Jon and myself cannot prevent people going down there. We were simply passing on the message from the landowner.

    Another bobby Dazzler! The farmer would coin it in if he opened up the portal as a tourist attraction, it would pay for the refurb of that end of the tunnel in no time!

    Does Jon have a channel?
    Or is part of this that you refuse to identify him?

      No Jon doesn't have a channel. I would happily share that if he did.
