I dug up a lot of information on many of these inmates that were interviewed. The San Quentin inmate newspaper editor that said he did time in Attica, found out who he was and how his life proceeded after this documentary. Even found the fellow that produced this video to ask about the Hispanic inmate (Manny) that said he was a revolutionary, terrorist, hitman and his death sentence was commuted to life without because I couldn't find any info on him. There are many more people interviewed on the original documentary not shown here. Even got all of the info on all of the death row inmates that were interviewed on the original documentary. I put it all on the comments section of the original video. If you are interested, check it out. Or feel free to ask. I'm glad Josh is going to make this a multi part series because I've got tons of information on a number of people that were interviewed on this documentary.
One of the most notable inmates shown here 6:50 is Gregory Ulas Powell who spent four years on death row for killing a police officer. He was the Onion Field Killer. Much has been written about him and a movie was made. He was involved in two escape attempts while on death row. His death sentence was overturned when the Supreme Court ruled capital punishment was cruel and unusual punishment in 1972. He blamed the movie made about him as the reason he was denied parole in the 1980's. He had later become institutionalized. I knew someone that did time with him in San Quentin and apparently, he was an avid tennis player on the yard. But was also a punk. In later years he was considered for parole but told authorities that if they tried to release him he would "cause trouble". He died of cancer in prison in 2012.
The gay inmate seen here at 3:11 was named Dale. In prison he was known as Bubbles. Apparently, he served seven years (in that bid) on a gun charge. He worked in the warden's office. He and his brothers (except one) apparently were in and out of prison for much of their lives. Apparently, Dale died a few years ago.
I actually located and asked Clint Weyrauch (who produced and directed this back in the 70's) about the revolutionary dude 15:20. He said his name was Manny. Also said that they were never sure if his stories were true. I have to say, I've looked into it and Manny's claims are not adding up. for one, Gov. Knight only commuted the sentences of a few death row inmates and he doesn't fit any of those. There is a guy named Manuel Joe Chavez who was involved in firebombing a bar that killed six people who had his death sentence commuted in 1966. But it was Gov. Brown that commuted his sentence. Also, Chavez was 25, not 19 when he was arrested for this in 1957. His sentence was also commuted to life with the possibility of parole, not life without as Manny claimed. What threw me off is they look quite similar (if aging is considered). Despite that, it doesn't seem like the same guy.
The guy in cuffs 7:10 lighting a cigarette is Garland Berry. He was in administrative segregation in this clip for running knives for the Black Guerilla Family prison gang. He was murdered in San Quentin by Aryan Brother gang leader Barry Mills.
The inmate speaking at 3:35 was the editor of the San Quentin News. His name is George Thomas Shroeder. He was in prison for armed robbery and burglary in San Fransisco and San Mateo counties. A career criminal, he served five years in San Quentin and was released in June 1975 to Nevada authorities and paroled shortly thereafter. Two months later he was arrested for his part in a burglary of a surplus store in Pleasant Hill. This resulted in a police chase and where four police cars were rammed, and shots were fired. Stolen handguns from the surplus store were recovered. He was acquitted of those charges later. He was arrested and released twice again in 1978 and 1979 and was rearrested for petty thefts including stealing a pair of pants. He was convicted of burglary in Virginia when he was 21 and also served time in Attica State prison in New York.
I worked at a plumbing company in Houston in 80s and I remember the owner would hire lots of guys right out of prison. Some were crazy but a lot were really good guys to work with and they really appreciated working there.
Great video brother I'm 36 year old white boy from CA Bay Area been locked up in San Quentin and Folsom State prison the coolest thing about prison in San Quentin is the food is good and the cafeteria has amazing artwork painted all over the walls graffiti done with coffee grounds it's actually sold to the Smithsonian museum
I wouldn't call it "getting soft" as well age. I think it's just life experience... Every day,of every week, every month and year we gain knowledge. The older you get the more you start to really understand what's important, and what's not important. What's worth fighting for and not worth fighting for... For me I had many people I was friends with for over 20 years pass away, family members pass, and many people I hung out with regularly but wouldn't necessarily call them friends die as well. Self reflection, being honest with yourself. Listening to the little voice in your head, and the instinct in your gut.
That prisoner Gregory Powell who was on death row and then made it to honor block, murdered a Los Angeles police officer in the 60s in a onion field, and is who the movie and book "The Onion Field" was based on. When the death penalty was abolished all death row inmates had their death sentence commuted, some have even been paroled.

It is stacked against you. It's a business and you're the product. It's sad you can pay your debt to society and still walk around with the punishment. Can't vote, can't carry fire arms, tons of jobs won't hire you or even give you a chance at an interview, housing does background checks and alot of people judge you right out the gate. I was out at a job about 6 months ago(work for geek squad) and the client I was working for did 10 years and had been out for about 5 years. We've gotten really close and they made it extremely hard for him. He dated a psycho woman and after they split she told the police he beat her and with no evidence whatsoever they picked him up and slapped and ankle monitor on him and he had to fight for months to get it off and then they charged him 30k for it. One of the only jobs he can get is working for the oil field 12hrs a day 7 days a week. 3 weeks on and 1 off. It's a shame that all she had to do was say he hit her and that cost him 30k and if he couldn't pay it they'd throw him back in. I truly believe he is innocent. He got the monitor removed but still has to go to court and try to prove his innocence in a he said she said case.

@@lockdown23and1 there was an incident where somebody used the pool ball or stick as a weapon, so that’s why they got taken out from all the buildings except the reentry building from what I remember

My mom got wrapped up with 2 brothers fresh outta 20+ year sentences, they knew she got disability and medications.
@@Placker8102after you served your time you should be given a clean slate. They stack the odds against you on purpose and it's just plain evil. Whole systems fvcked.
Bro. I had to grind it out for 5 years before I got a good job. Grinded out. Be stronger than everyone else.
I heard you mention VA Beach, I was born and raised there...I spent 60 days twice at the VB resort...I was the lowest custody and the second time in I got into the trustee program and it was way better than the regular pods
Does hotball still work at vbcc? Great videos btw
I been locked up in the past but I can't imagine ever having to go to this place!!
My uncle just made parole from San Quentin after 25 years he'll be home soon
San Quentin has been Minimum Security for several years now, it’s definitely NOT the same place as it was from the 50’s through the 90’s
Man, I feel all relaxed just lookin at that beautiful sunset on that board. Bob Ross would be proud.
First compound I went to had dart boards with real darts. The last time I went in back in 09 they just got rid of tobacco but still had horse shoes, and a softball field at every joint I went to
BOBBY!!!!!! lmao, i cracked right there! wassup tho Death. keep the good work.
Knew it was gonna be a hitter when you in the black tee coach 💪🏾🌹
It was heavy bodybuilding culture in there
That was great. Watched every second.
Great content as always!
When you said catnip my cat heard that shiz and got excited so I had to give him some now he going nuts lol 😹
Dude you crack me up. Bobby! I didn't know Bobby was in San Quentin, 😅
some good wisdom you said at 11:45
Having a cat when locked up would be amazing they should try that more
They do it in lots of places
You can still check out the horse shoes at deep Meadows. I left from deep meadows in 2020. They still had the horse shoes or at least maybe they brought him back since you had left.
But now the buildings are labeled from 1 to 6
pool tables still there?
@@lockdown23and1 they took them out of building six but when I went to the reentry building four in 2020 it was there. But they were in building six at first from 2019 to 2020.
@@lockdown23and1 there was an incident where somebody used the pool ball or stick as a weapon, so that’s why they got taken out from all the buildings except the reentry building from what I remember
Sunset is awsome
What about a Super Moon Night time theme?
With a tiny palm tree Island and jumping dolphins with some crazy bio luminous ocean view .
Great documentary indeed
You speak the truth bro excellent commentary
When i got down to level 1 prison just under 2 years to the door, they had a dog program where you live in a special unit and train your own dog for Paws with a cause. I tried so hard to get in but i was like 6 weeks under 2 years when i tried. I was bummed!
My husband lives on San Quentin's East Block better known as Death Row........ This block is in the process of closing.
I got a good idea you should do a night time Moon set Theme my brother...just throwing something to the table
It’s crazy your from va I’ve been to dillwyn, nottoway, buckingham, and Sussex 2
My uncle did 10 years for manslaughter in San Quentin in the 60s early 70s, visited him several times with my mom when I was a kid.
Saw METALLICA PLAY THERE IN 2003.. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AWE INSPIRING...
That sucks you didn't have anyone to play horse shoes with. I think it would be a blast to play shoes with you. You are always welcome here in New Mexico
Damm well i enjoyed it bro. Another great short documentary video ❤
BRo your too hilarious BRo I like the way your ding those shows BRo keep it up BRo Gang Gang 🤴🏽😉🖤🖤🔥🔥👌🏽✌🏽🤘🏽🥂🍾💯✅
@14:08 Damn!! 375 plus the way they get it up.... Pure Raw Strength right there
Words of wisdom bro thanks for those gems 💎😎👍👏💪
Your face at 14:45 ish when that dude just casually says something about being a terrorist had my dying 😂
“Cut him next” 😂😂😂😂 bro has me bustin up! Shut him up, cut, next! Hahaha he be making too much sense.
Laugh out loud was you silly like this in prison😂 I could have did a bid with you😅 you keep me laughing
My mom got wrapped up with 2 brothers fresh outta 20+ year sentences, they knew she got disability and medications. I personally ased them please come to me before she racked up any debt and they agreed. Within a year-year and a half I had to put an additional lean on my mobile home to pay her up. this was in 2012 when banks were still happy to repo any and everything. My 2 girls and I lost our home because they finessed her month after month till they bleed her and I dry
Good video as usual and you definitely found your niche. I am also working to build my small UA-cam channel in hopes of going full time some day. It can be done!
damn right it can! stay consistent and entertaining my friend
Another banger!😂👏✌️❤️🙏
Stayed at a place like that for 2 days. I couldn't stand it! Just some simple freedoms are taken for granted by most of us. I can deal with cabin fever, it's when it's structured for me that I can't deal.
Death getting old school on us 😆
"I trust nobody with wallet chains" words to live by lmao
I trust that any wallet on a chain NEVER has more than $20 in it.
My pops is free after 23 years and last year he was here at san Quentin he said it was wayyy better than the place he was beforehand. Also watched him try to survive off of a double western bacon and large fry😂 homie ate way too much
I did time i the early 80's and the early 00's.... vastly different. "doing your own number" is a thing of the past.... everyone is up in everyone's business. I get it...but it used to be kinda fun.....and i just got old..
Reidsville prison in Ga. wasn't a walk in the park back then either.
Ol’ death was in the pen polishing knobs? I knew it bro 😂
Where Merle Haggard was locked up when Johnny Cash performed for the inmates and the ol Hag turned his life around, and the rest is history.
I did nine years nsp i still have that beast from prison inside its just quieter as ive got older. Drop of hat if my mindframe of freedom gets lost i can go evil. Ive realized freedom is crucial.
The pen in Baltimore had couple horse shoe pits 4-5 rims and a sand volley ball court
Funny seeing some hard "gangsters" playing volleyball
Big respectful SALUTE, and RESPECT 💯 Death,
Man I snorted dr.pepper when you called out Bobby at Quentin.
the look on this dudes face when he heard that "hey ma ur kids fine"
Great video again.
Heck yeah another vid 🙌🙌🙌
