    A good idea when dialing in tone is to use the looper on 1st position. 2 hands free to fiddle is better then guitar on lap

    Awesome video, the Revv amps have definitely been my favorite since they came out. One thing that helped me speed up the tone shaping process is throwing a looper in front.

    That Revv.. keeps getting more and more Nick Hill screen time. Is the Badonk fading into the background? All your tones sound siiick though. Very cool to see your methodology.

    Hi Nick! I am lucky enough to have both an Axe Fx 3 and HX Stomp. My Stomp was just for hotel jamming while traveling for work. UNTIL NOW!! Nick - I followed your process step by step and with my travel guitar (Steinburger Synapse with EMG's) it sounds simply HUGE! Learned a whole bunch on how to dial this small little gem in and will be spending more time in HX land. Still love my Axe FX - its a beast but now I'm grinning with the tones out of my Stomp :-) Thanks for such a great instructional. Thumbs up from me.

    Nick, have you ever thrown a pre-EQ, in analysis mode, on your DI signal? I found that using a reference DI, you can match the EQ profile of it prior to re-amping. It definitely changes the character and tone of the processed signal. I would think the impedance setting will influence this as well. I've also been looking at the raw EQ profiles of Seymour Duncan pickups and I believe our Solars have Custom-5's. They have a pretty significant mid scoop on their raw EQ profile. I also see that Solar uses trembuckers on both bridge and neck. I doubt this has much impact on tone, but the magnets don't perfectly align over the strings. My treble strings are more closely aligned to the magnets than my bass. Very enjoyable video, as always. Your channel is one of my favorite places on the internet. Best regards.

    Hey, Nick, great, witty, and relaxing content as always. Just saw Music Gear Network's video "My #1 Line 6 Helix Tone Tip Of All Time," where Eric adds a Kinky Boost right after the amp and before the IR and how significantly it impacts the tone. Would you mind fiddling around with this setup and telling us what you think?

      Fuck yeah man looking forward to what heavy tone you can get out of this! 👊

  • @AndrewStonerock
    @AndrewStonerock 4 роки тому +2

    Revv purple became my go to for heavy sounds. It sounds rediculous through my spider valve 40 watt tube power amp and cab.. also I kind of look at sag like power amp compression. Turn down the sag and you decrease the power amp compression.

    • @AndrewStonerock
      @AndrewStonerock 4 роки тому +2

      I've also found that the digital noise is still there no matter what. That's why I started using the spider valve power section instead of my frfr. I did notice that when I'm recording I can get rid of the fizz by using the slate console stuff. I use the USA pre and console on the input, and I the USA summing model on the mix buss. Totally clears up the fizz in the recordings, and adds some really dope "analog" color.

    I've had a Helix for a good few years now and I do enjoy your videos - I've got stuck in a Badonk rut so its nice to get some tips on different amps.
    One thing that has and still does confuse me is: People seem to be adverse to using the Global EQ to get rid of the digital hiss and always rely on EQ blocks in the actual patch. Is this because you might be using your Helix for different things/styles (i.e. Studio, Live, Rock, Metal, Jazz, Japanese experimental noseflute pop, etc) and therefore need patch level control instead of a sledgehammer approach.
    I primarily use my helix for LIVE so I've got the global eq scooping out them nasty hissy bastards - just wondering what your take on it is?

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  4 роки тому +1

      Hey man, I guess the thing to do is to do what works best for you. Common sense would say that if you were making the same moves on all your patches, you may as well use the global EQ, right? But like you said, people seem to like to debate this topic and I’m not entirely sure why

    • @fubnuts
      @fubnuts 4 роки тому

      @@NickHillMakesMusic Thanks for the reply. I think I'll keep experimenting. I'll stick with the Global EQ option for now, however I'm liking the Tilt EQ is interesting... Hmm.

    See on the bit when you talk about high cuts, when you play live and go into FOH how drastically would you cut the high end? Or would you let the sound guy deal with it?
    Cheers for the video btw :D

    I notice you use IRs almost all the time. Can you do one with the stock cabs, just to show what the Helix can do on its own? Maybe do a comparison between a stock cab like a Mesa 4x12 with V30s and a similar IR?

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  4 роки тому +2

      I have a couple videos using stock cabs my man. I also don’t feel like the Helix isn’t “doing it on its own,” because I use IRs. IRs are an amazing tonal tool used by just about everyone and for the price, you can’t beat them as far as I’m concerned. Anyhow, check out my stick can videos. Cheers my man

      @@NickHillMakesMusic Thank you sir, I have learned a lot from your videos. I especially like the idea of boosting the highs with a narrow Q and sweeping to find which frequency needs to be eliminated, then dialing it back 3dB.

    Hi! I'm new with HX Stomp... I think I understand that this "Preset" is for using it with an IR through a PA or in the studio... but what about using the HX through a real cab? would you use the same settings??? what would you change?... It will be great to watch a video of it! Thanks!

  • @mrz3r068

    Hi Nick, I started to follow your instruction in the video and unfortunately i get discouraged at the very beginning when I compare your sound to mine, just the raw amp sound that you have at 5:50 is already so much better to mine, mine sounds weak. I really wonder why is that? I use a jim root stratocaster which should be amazing for metal. However my Helix is plugged to a yamaha ThrX which is a very small lamp amp. I use the headphones output of that one. Could this amp be the reason of the sound difference? Where does your helix go out to? If anyone could help me out on this one I'd be very grateful! Thank you for the video!
