I've seen most of these, and Brother Antonius is by far the most compelling. He "tells" instead of shows. He's not trying to show-off his poetry, he's speaking clearly as to what he thinks poetry does, "an x-factor that reveals *something*, and moves unerringly toward it." Making the poem the thing itself capable of agency. The poet is just there to usher the poem to where it's trying to go. He reminds me of "stand-up tragedian" Brother Theodore, who was non-denominational as far as I'm aware.

A perfect pairing, despite and because of their apparent contrasts.

ginsberg really was poisonous for a lot of the people he influenced. you can hear a childish imitation of the worse parts of his career in mcclure.

he reminds me of a lot of the trust-funded artists here in nyc. because of how bold he is in doing totally pointless and useless bullshit.

Most poetry scenes are full of posers and small-minded people.

The Talking Heads had great advice: Stop Making Sense. McClure's book "Scratching the Beat Surface" is a brilliant exploration of the poetic process, not just his. One of my favorire reads that i've returned to many times over the years.

McClure shows in this film how to be a complete idiot. Now I'll read his poetry with this knowledge in mind.

What the hell? It took him 6 wks to come down (Ginsburg "diagnosed" him w anxiety) and in the same breath says he swore off hallucinogens but tried it once again. Its not mandatory but perhaps he wanted to be cool. Sacrifice sanity for vanity. I hope you are cool now wherever u are. Rip

McClure definitely doesn't age well in this video. I mean, the merits of his work seem obscured by the fashions of the moment.
