Issa Rae talks about Denzel Washington at the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute on June 6, 2019 at the Dolby Theatre. The AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO DENZEL WASHINGTON aired on Thursday, June 20, at 10:00 PM (ET/PT) on TNT. Sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will also air the special in October 2019, during a night of programming dedicated to Washington’s work.
Mahershala Ali, Chadwick Boseman, Jodie Foster, Antoine Fuqua, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Julia Roberts and Cicely Tyson also paid tribute to Washington's life and work.
Additional guests included Ed Begley, Jr., W. Kamau Bell, Joy Bryant, Joel Coen, Richard Donner, Ava DuVernay, Cary Elwes, Carl Franklin, Antoine Fuqua, David Alan Grier, Keegan-Michael Key, Martin Lawrence, Frances McDormand, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Paula Patton, Jay Pharoah, Chris Tucker and Edward Zwick.

Simple Truths She gave him compliments: she didn’t go straight for the kill. It wouldn’t have been taken that way if a man said he exactly what she said it’s a compliment. The difference is men wouldn’t have worded it like that. They would’ve said some crazy rated r shit like I said! Y’all don’t know how to compliment y’all look at ass and titties and make vulgar comments. She didn’t do that. She spoke about his looks and how her mom and grandma adored him and felt he was fine. Never once objectified him, spoke about his good looks in a very respectful way. Show me a man that does that.
Simple Truths there is no double standard. She didn’t objectify him! He didn’t feel disrespected! That’s the difference. Now if he felt objectified and he felt disrespected then there is an issue! He felt neither in fact he and his wife were laughing. So yes we know what they meant by “fine” but trust me no men would ever speak of women this respectfully and have been “promoting rape culture”
