Making it worse since I had setup IP specific so google browser SSH was blocked because not white-listed thus I needed third party like putty on my white-listed IP to get in! I'm not sure. This day and age you might want to refrain from using username and password to login! Just a little insight. Smarter to generate private keys for each device you want to ssh from. It might be extra work, but it's more secure that way.
I can think of two things that might be causing this, you have the enable-oslogin set as TRUE or you didn't place the username in the comment when creating the key pair (puttygen)
So Putty was the problem for me... I saved the ip address in Putty (since i would be connecting to the server a lot). but i didnt save the ssh key. So each time i hit load it was loading the empty path. -_______-
I followed the tutorial untill i started to log in @4.14 : after typing the user name i got: "No supported authentication methods available (server sent:publickey). I also tried the tut from sentdex (pythonprogramming) and same result. guess need to do it the google tutorial way, I just wanted to save more time. thanks
sounds like your sshd doesn't allow 'password authentication' and you are not using ssh keys to connect. Check out the video for details of how to modify sshd, remember to restart the service :)
try to connect to the user and password that you've just created like shown in the video and type : sudo passwd Then you'll be able to change the root password
how do i login to root account using password? I logged in and I went into root with an account but I want to login straight to the root account... how do I Do that without having to type sudo su -

So if you try to connect to the same IP it will simply not work. The purpose of this video is to show how you can modify your own VM in Google Cloud Platform to be able to use PuTTY for the SSH connection.

Is your username "adam" supposed to be your google username (which would mean your email is adam@gmail.com) or you local machine's username?
