This video is a who's who of Chicago radio history! Dahl, Hemmert, Landecker, Sirott, Brant Miller, a clip of Garry Meier -- people we grew up listening to. Cool tribute for Tom.
Tom is the best, He's been meteorolgist at WGN since the days when Jack Brickhouse was calling Cubs games....Think about that...He got us throught the joyful days of sunshine and all the threatning and brutal storms , and served us well with the most useful knowledge in humility and remarkable candor. You always made our weather fun in Chicago and kept us on our toes, over a span of 6 decades. Wow! Thanks Tom and all the best going forward _ Happy Retirement!
No one, NO ONE presented the weather forecast like Tom Skilling. I remember when he started in the Chicago area when I was in high school. Not only did he present the forecast, but also educated us about the weather during each presentation. A brilliant man. A gentleman, and a humble soul. God bless Tom Skilling and all the best on his retirement!
I was just out of high school during that brutal winter of 78-79 and Tom Skilling had just started. Whoever would have thought he'd stay with the same broadcasting station his entire 45 year career. WGN loved him and so do we. Congratulations on your retirement Tom Skilling!
My eyes have been “raining” the whole time I watched this .🌧️ I can’t believe you’re really retiring! Many years ago my Dad introduced me to WGN-TV weather, first with Harry Volkman; & then along came the great Tom Skilling to fill his big shoes! When Harry Volkman left, you surpassed all our expectations. May God bless you for all the decades of service to the citizens of Illinois, & to the weather community. Thank you! I hope to meet you one day, before we’re both too much older.
Respect to the other newscasters in Chicago giving Tom the respect he deserves. Some people would look at separate channels owned by separate companies as “channel wars”, but they’re just different channels, not wars. They all share the same thing, they all love Chicago. Absolutely right to respect the greatest weatherman in Chicago history. Respect to all the other Chicago channels who didn’t fight against other companies but gave their tributes to Tom. Tom is amazing and I will miss him as well. Happy Retirement
Thank You Mr. Skilling Much Love from outside the Chicago Area in Birmingham, Alabama watching WGN News in the Late 90's and the 2000's spanned Elementary School through College.
Detroit and Michigan sends our best wishes. Only because when we happened to channel surf and stopped at WGN via cable or satellite to catch Tom's forecasts which would eventually move into our areas hours later after the weather (whatever the conditions were) at that time moved thru the greater Chicago area. And forewarned us of potential issues with it. Thanks for your dedication, and honest reporting.
I hope he reads and listens to these tributes for many years to come. Just looking at a few a day will remind you of how much you are admired, respected and loved in Chicago, the burbs and pretty much all over the world. You are almost as dear to us adults, as Santa was to us as children. Instead of "Where's Waldo?", in Chicago we ask what does Tom Skilling say/predict. Everyone knows who we're talking about. Even your good friend, the weather gave you a fitting Chicago style send off. See sawing from upper 60s one day to lower 20s the next with, rain, snow, hail and tornadoes thrown in for good measure. Did you orchestrate this or did it take the collaborative weather wizardry of all your fellow WGN weather personnel??? Whichever it was, I am impressed!!! Wishing you many happy years of interesting weather watching ahead. After all, only sunshine would be boring. Thank you for giving so many of us an appreciation for the weather. Hear in Chicago, we have it all. Enjoy!!!
I live in Kentucky and I've watched Tom For years and years and people probably are wondering why and me living in Kentucky . I have a lot of family that lived in Chicago years back and it just always interested me wondering what kinda weather they were having and he's just a Good Ole Fashioned Man that took his job very serious and anytime he wants to return to the weather I'd be safe saying that he could come anywhere in Kentucky and go straight to work and that goes for anywhere in The United States 😅
Tom ..broadcasting continues to need you instead of retirement why don't you buy and run your own radio station as Mal Bellais did, Howard Miller, Dick Lashbrook and Jack Brickhouse did. Radio program director Rusty Tym is so proud of you. He certainly did the right thing when he had you do weather on WKKD Salter Broadcasting
I pray Tom moves to Florida, especially where the state is protected by a real leader, not a 600-lb overweight dictator Illinois is foolishly stuck with!
