Brachial Plexus Anatomy
The brachial plexus has 5 roots. It is formed by ventral rami of C5, C6,C7,C8 and T1.
Brachial plexus roots pass between scalenus anterior and scalenus medius muscle.
Brachial plexus trunks:
C5, C6 join together and form the upper trunk,
C7 makes the middle trunk,
C8, T1 join together and form the lower trunk.
Brachial plexus divisions:
Each trunk splits into 2 divisions: anterior and posterior division.
Three posterior divisions unit to form the Posterior cord.
Brachial plexus has 5 subunits. Roots, trunks, divisions, cords and branches.
Brachial plexus cords:
The upper 2 anterior division join together and form the Lateral cord. The anterior division of the lower trunk forms the Medial cord. They are named for their position in relation to the Axillary artery. So Lateral cord is lateral to axillary artery, medial cord is medial to axillary artery and posterior cord is posterior to axillary artery.
From C5 it comes the dorsal scapular nerve that supply the:
Levator scapula muscle,
Rhomboid major muscle,
Rhomboid minor muscle.
From C5 C6 C7 comes the long thorasic nerve which supply the Serratus anterior muscle.
Serratus anterior muscle contraction leads to ventrolateral movement of the scapula along the ribs. It also helps in active stabilization of scapula within the shoulder. Injury to this nerve will affect the serratus anterior and cause medial winging of the scapula.
Brachial plexus trunks:
Among the 3 trunks, only the upper trunk gives branches. This is suprascapular nerve. It supplies the supraspinatus muscle and infraspinatus muscle.
One more important branch is Nerve to subclavius.
Brachial plexus divisions has no branches.
Lateral cord gives 3 branches, posterior cord gives 5 branches and medial cord gives 5 branches.
The Lateral cord gives: 1- The Lateral pectoral. 2- The Musculocutaneous. 3- The Lateral branch of median nerve
The Posterior cord gives: 1- The Upper subscapular. 2- The Thoracodorsal. 3- The Lower subscapular. 4- The Axillary nerve. 5- The Radial nerve
The
Medial cord gives: 1- The Medial pectoral. 2- The Medial cutaneous nerve of the arm 3- The Medial cutaneous nerve of the forearm. 4- The Ulnar nerve. 5- The Media branch of the median nerve
Now here 3 mnemonics to remember those branches.
Mnemonic for the lateral cord branches is “Lucy Loves Me”
L - Lateral pectoral
L - Lateral branch of median nerve
M - Musculocutaneous
Mnemonic for the POSTERIOR cord branches is “ULNAR”
U - Upper subscapular nerve
L - Lower subscapular
N - Nerve to latissimus dorsi
A - Axillary nerve
R - Radial nerve
Mnemonic for the Medial cord branches is “Most Medical Men Use Morphine”
M - Medial cutaneous nerve of arm
M - Medial cutaneous nerve of forearm
M - Medial pectoral nerve
U - Ulnar nerve
M- Medial root of median nerve
