      I swear...its been so annoying to see so many people blindly bash the 660s or 660s2 and not even compare them to each other. I get it, the 6xx is a sweet deal and the 600 is a classic but that doesn't mean the 660s or 660s2 isn't better.

    The HD600 was where it really began for me, way back in late 1998. When my son was just learning to walk he got his hands on them and he went down the hallway with them and placed them in the bottom of the dishwasher while his mother was multi-tasking. I was working a second shift job at the time and didn't learn about it until the next morning when I went to put the dishes away. I purchased another pair about 7 or 8 years ago but I decided to purchase the 660S2 recently as a substitute for the Audeze MM100 which I had paid for but has yet to come onto the market. I bought an open box model in brand new condition for the same $400 price and am very, very happy with them. I have never heard the 600S but in comparison to my 600 it's immediate how much more bass response the 660S2 brings to the experience. It punches deep and with authority, though I wouldn't call it a bass lover's dream. It is clean and well controlled, not muddy or sloppy. The mid-range is typical Sennheiser, it's so good. I think the 660S2 is a bit more wide in soundstage as compared to the original HD600. The upper end, the treble, is clear and airy. It's a bit more crisp than the 600 but not sibilant. And I don't hear that notorious "Sennheiser veil" here. I really enjoy the 660S2 for it's overall make-up. It sounds outstanding. It is FUN. It has a heritage to be proud of as it is light weight, ultra comfortable and one just knows that the build quality is going to last for decades if not washed in the dishwasher, and any parts necessary are going to be readily available and easy to replace by oneself using a minimum of tools. I chose to purchase an "upgraded" cable solely because I wished for a seven foot length instead of using the stock ten footer. I think Sennheiser has another winner here. Excellent review, Lachlan!

      @@tomdavis6371 I have the 660S2 but never heard the 600. It gets lots of fanfare which has me curious. Do you think they compliment each other or should I just stick to my 660S2 and forget about the 600?

    • @tomdavis6371
      @tomdavis6371 3 місяці тому +1

      It's hard for me to answer that for a number of reasons. First off, I don't know about or wish to inquire about your budget, that's none of my business. Secondly, I don't know what you're powering your headphones with. Both of these 300 ohm headphones do both solid state and tubes well. I wouldn't be the first to say that they are magical on tubes. Next, I don't know your age and that may be a consideration. I will turn 63 in about three months and so my hearing isn't the same as when I was younger. For that reason I appreciate that extra kick in the pants of the boosted bass as well as the attenuated top end. Finally, I don't know what types of music you listen to. Can you audition the 600 anywhere? Open to any method of EQ? Are you open to buying a used or open box 600? You're right about the fanfare, it's been around since 1997 for a reason. I wouldn't want to be the guy to say it's not a worthwhile headphone in 2024 just because it is still terrific. That said, now you need to consider that 90's faux granite look headband or the gray headband of the newer 600. I personally prefer the newer look as that 90's granite look isn't particularly gorgeous IMO, and the finish on that 90's version tends to blister and chip/peel away. That was my experience with mine.

    Thank you. That was the most unbiased review of these HPs I have seen, not compromised by the price comparison to HD6XX (mostly available only in the US) or the HD650. Thanks much for the review Lachlan!
    I always keep eye on the HD600 line because these are literally the best fitting and one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever tried.
    Also, I enjoyed the music a lot on the original HD600. I found them excellent for that „sit back and relax“ use case you described.
    I have since traded them for more technically capable headphones but I still question that decision sometimes to be honest :)

    I was particularly interested in your comparison with SV023 which are my headphones of choice at the moment. I would consider them pretty much perfect for the price if only they didn’t have that 4K peak...
    Could you compare their soundstaging with the 660S2 please?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      Glad you liked it, Lukas. I think they're fairly comparable on soundstage size, but the HD660S2 has a little more sense of space between the sounds so it does probably come across just a little more spacious. If you're generally enjoying the SV023, but want a little less aggression/a little more smoothness then the 660S2 would be a great choice I think.

    Great video, Thanks! How do you find it to review headphones live as you listen? Some of your colleagues seem to slip into a fugue-like monologue as if they were speaking in tongues, which must leave them quite fatigued afterwards. One could argue that live listening reviews allow less room for vague descriptions and some reviewers even might be tempted to renege later especially if the headphones are currently in vogue.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      The hardest part for me is that I need time to listen and think, and switch back and forth before reaching solid conclusions so there's a lot of "dead air" when I review live. That's fine for the behind-the-scenes reviews I share with patrons because they're deliberately un-produced/unpolished, but I think too many people would switch off if I did my public reviews like that.
      I also think that it is hard to avoid people hearing the first thing you say and jumping to conclusions so while it's not so much about reneging, there are lots of times I'll make a note or say something in a BTS review and then a few moments later, I'll go back and adjust what I've said with some more nuanced or a better perspective.

    I will say the HD600s are pretty durable lol. At least the classic kitchen counter version that I bought right before they changed the design about 7 years ago. My set were slammed into the desk multiple times over the years and not even a scratch! Only thing I've had to replace is the velour ear pads. OG cord still in perfect shape and working order despite running it over with a huge chair and almost yanking it out of the sockets nightly if not hourly. I wore them in humid outdoor environments almost nightly for about 2 years taking them on walks, but that did take a toll on the pads so I had to replace them more often.
    Still works perfectly after all these years and almost as good for quite a few types of music as my way more expensive hi-fi 2 channel speaker setup. So good so that I just went ahead and picked up the HD660S2 for $400 US, as they are on sale now. Based on my experience and what you and others have said I'm sure I will be very happy using these at work with a small portable dac/amp. I'm am not a bass head but having a bit more accurate and present bass as well as treble will a welcome addition and surely help with dynamics.
    Imo you should never pay full price for SH and I didn't for my HD600s 7 years ago, which are 300 bucks now and were 300 bucks back then (both sale prices , 7 years apart). Wait for the really good sales as well. If you can get 25%-33% off retail, this became a bit of a no brainer, assuming you like this style of headphones of course. This isn't a headphone for loud areas or bass heads. It will sound worse than 50 dollar Sony earbuds if used in the wrong enviros. Cheers!

    It's a shame they didn't take this opportunity to ditch the proprietary connectors and I don't know why they use that weird, awkward 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter instead of doing what everyone else does.
    What changes did Sennheiser make to the drivers to increase resistance? I've always wondered how that works.
    Btw, the Spinfit 360 does work on my OH-10 but they are very fiddly and tricky to get on because its diameter is even smaller than the CP100.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому

      They are probably in a hard place with the connectors. Changing connectors would have meant a new chassis design and probably would have angered all of the people who own and love their existing HD6.. headphones and have already invested in aftermarket cables.
      As for the increased impedance, that's all about the design of the voice coil. Using different metals, the thickness of wire and the number of turns in the voice coil will all influence impedance and performance.

    Great review. Per the video seems like Sennheiser basically fixed what people probably thought was lacking on the HD600 and a lot of the HD6xx line with the lack of sub bass. So more spacious sound and better sub bass (per other amazon reviews) sounds like the perfect Sennheiser headphone for under $1k when they already did an incredible job with this line. I wouldn't be surprised if this review is spot on, perhaps the perfect all around headphone but nothing that jumps out at you and goes that's the greatest thing I've ever heard...but the whole package is incredible for under $1k. Of course those are my guesses without listening to them myself but it sounds like a very attractive potential upgrade for an HD600 user which I currently am and this wouldn't break the bank. I considered saving up for the Arya's but those aren't cheap at all and this is just a little under half the price of the Arya Stealth. Decisions.

    • @harackmw
      @harackmw Рік тому +2

      I am surprised you got that from the review. Lachlan rarely comes out and is negative about any headphone, but if you re-watch his conclusion especially there are a lot of qualifiers in there to caution anyone from getting hyped about this headphone. It is simply fine, not ground breaking, and for half the price you can get similar performance [or better] from other headphones in the 600 line, especially the 600 or 650. From that point of view, it is not a stretch to say they are a bit of a disappointment for that price and I'd argue they are not worth it compared to the competition. But Senn fans are probably going to eat it up, which is probably who this is for.

    • @Ray-dl5mp
      @Ray-dl5mp Рік тому +1

      @@harackmw yea I think you could look at it both ways. He basically said nothing about it stands out but the total package is a great all a rounder or great way to relax and enjoy the music. He did claim it’s not a great toe tapper. You could also argue a lot of music and headphones come down to trade offs. So just because something doesn’t stand out in one particular department doesn’t mean it’s a disappointment. It sounds similar to what the hd600 already is (popular headphone in the community I imagine) just with
      better sub bass and better space/soundstage, and perhaps better detail ( based on what I’ve read online from random posts or user reviews so I could have bogus info). But definitely possible there are trade offs with hd600 and hd600 may still do some things better. I’m considering it based on things I’ve read online. I think it’s cool that Sennheiser is basically giving fans the option that fills in what people wanted. And it’s priced accordingly. But yea compared to the competition, am I bias and only focusing on Sennheiser under 1k - yes definitely - because I like the hd600. Good thoughts by you. I shouldn’t have said it’s the best option under 1k perhaps but it might be if you like the hd600 but you wish it had a couple tweaks. I wouldn’t know unless I tried it. I’m sure other brands do a great job too.

      @@Ray-dl5mp I also have the HD600 and though I moved on to other headphones I keep coming back to it, as it also seems to scale with better amps and those that can handle 300ohm, so it is fun to take out once in a while. Yes, my bad, I meant for myself I was somewhat disappointed. But that is true for a lot of Sennheizer's lineup. I guess I was referring mainly to the old critique of the 600, 650, and 660 variations where differences between them are slight. I struggle to hear a difference between them to justify the added costs, or claims that there are massive differences between them, as I felt the differences are not that drastic and in a blind test I would probably fail to pick them apart from each other. So with the 6602 I was hoping it would be a departure from this trend, but it does not appear to be so. I wonder if the HD700 reviews burned them too badly, and they were raked over the coals for making a warmish headphone and so have opted for higher price points but with little variation because it is a safer bet with their fanbase. Anyway, I digress...

    • @Ray-dl5mp
      @Ray-dl5mp Рік тому +1

      @@harackmw Yeah I totally get your thoughts. Based on early thoughts I've read online (I haven't watched all the big reviews) I am hoping this was more of a departure than the other ones in the 6xx line (as some people on reddit and amazon seem to think this is a good update). I totally agree with you before this headphone though, the full HD6xx line only seem to have minor differences from each other, and a lot of audiophiles seem to prefer the classic HD600 where it's hard to beat for a great all rounder. But again, I think the HD660S2 sounds like the perfect upgrade on paper finally as it does look like they attempted to fix or improve the things that were lacking in the 6xx line. Is it overpriced? Perhaps but maybe not if you're getting a better version of the HD600 and it seems like some people online already prefer HD600 to more expensive headphones. But this is all a big IF. That being said, I pulled the trigger and I should get it next week. So I'll try to report back here with my thoughts. I couldn't help it as I do think improving the sub bass could be pretty awesome if they keep the things I love about the HD600 and perhaps make other small improvements as well.

      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      I think you're both right here. The 660S2 is an excellent headphone and one that I continue to use regularly. However, it's probably not as special as it SHOULD be for the price when the OG 660, 600, 650 and 6xx all exist. For me, it's a perfect all-day headphone for editing, video calls, multimedia, etc. but if I want a really exciting musical experience, I'll tend to reach for something else like a Meze 109. Having said that, the 109 is a clearly higher priced headphone.

    I was on the fence, or "feeince" as I believe you say in Australia, about scooping up the 660s2. Owning and liking the 6xx, that sound signature with more resolution would be pretty welcome in my home. But you audiofreaks won't shut up about the HD600 and how amazing it is and how it's still the standard and how the successors thereafter just don't match it for it's qualities and yadda yadda yadda. So I went with that instead for a 1/3rd of the cost and yeah.. pretty damn good headphone actually. Dare I say preferable to the 6xx. I still think the 660s2 is appealing but.. the 600s and 560s seem much more appealing given their potential cost to performance. I have a PC38x and while the form factor is down right insultingly cheap, the sound quality (extension and imaging particularly) is well above the price point. If that's just a twin/sister to the 560s then the 560s is a crazy value as well. I think I would like to collect them but it'd have to be sub-300. The more Meze and ZMF I own the less and less forgiving I am with the Sennheiser build at the initial retail price point. Especially when you consider the pad materials and the cabling. Nothing wrong with either, but at the price they could be much much better than average.

    And in the evening sometime it will be used for gaming, where the soundstage will be somewhat relevant.

I own both and the OGs have a kind of warm sound with the singer closer and warmer. the S2s have a very bright sound and the singer is farther away but you can definitely hear each and every note where as the S1s have a muddier warmer sound to them and therefore it's harder to hear each instrument/sound. The S2s are amazing for ROCK just absolutely absurdly better at listening to Rock and Metal than the S1s which again sound warmer and muddier and thicker and it's very hard to distinguish each sound with the S1s. The S1s on the other hand make listening to music with very vocal present AMAZING and a must have. The singer with the S1s sound like the singer is right there with you and present warm and it just gives you an intimate experience. The S2s with vocal present songs makes the singer farther away and a more brighter and sharper and clear sound to the vocalist. So that's basically it. S2 is for music, S1 is for vocals.

      @@shreddherring yes fair enough. I’m a big fan! This product gave me a reason to get it as I already have hd600 which is still a great product. But I didn’t want to pass up the changes they made to this new one as it seemed like a great upgrade in some ways. And it really is and I still think hd600 has its place for its midrange and comfortable listen. This just seems to be a landmark product like the HD800s and HD600 are. Sennheiser's track record makes me think their successes are based on pure luck. The HD600, the 800s, 6xx, you rarely hear about the rest. They should be doing R&D on what happened with the HD600 especially, why does it work, why has it remained a go-to headphone for so many. Many of the 600 line also sound so similar, it seems pointless to own more than one. They really should have tried to go for a different tuning or reach another level of detail/resolution for the asking price.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому

      I don't think it's pure luck. They have plenty of less popular models that still sell very well - they're just not regular "audiophile" recommendations. When you think about most brands, very few have more than 1-2 cult favourite headphones so, in some ways, Sennheiser are ahead of the pack

    • @harackmw
      @harackmw Рік тому +1

      @@PassionforSound True, but Sennheiser is kind of like the Philips of the audio world. A trusted brand name, been around a long time, but when you consider how long they have been around [especially the HD600s, from the 1990s] you'd think they would have more hits on the market than their competition, whereas brands new to headphones have just as many hit headphones, at least I would argue as much. Each brand I can think of has 2-3 that stand out, maybe more, whereas Sennheiser has only three or four over the past 35 years. The 600, 800s....the rest seem redundant to me and I have demoed most of them beside each other in a store. Anyway, just my perspective~

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому

      That's fair, but I also think it's worth considering that those new brands might end up looking much the same in 10-15 years from now. Headphone tech doesn't change rapidly like DACs or amps (although those are a bit debatable too). I think the fact that Sennheiser have taken long term, beloved series like the HD600/50 and upgraded them, the HD800 and upgraded it, and produced the IE600 and IE900 which are amazing IEMs, all make for some pretty solid performance. The new companies have started from nothing so they have to pump out new products to build their brand. Sennheiser are established and need to maintain their performing products and update them accordingly. I think they've done that. Not saying you're wrong, kit sharing a different possible perspective. They're both just out personal opinions in the end so no hard facts either way. 🙂

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Рік тому +1

      It's a lot more that a spot and polish, Steve. It's a whole new voice coil (i.e. driver motor) with noticeably better performance. I do think it's a little overpriced for what it is, but there aren't many other brands (Meze with the 109 being the exception) that are leaping ahead of them on price/performance.

    • @Ray-dl5mp
      @Ray-dl5mp Рік тому

      I actually think that's what's so awesome about this headphone. It's the perfect update to the HD600 in my opinion. Doesn't ruin the strengths of the 6xx line but adds improvement in bass presence and detail but doesn't overdo those areas and still keeps voices sounding great. I like to think they took decades on this and finally figured it out ha. That being said, I still think HD600 has the magical midrange. Always trade offs with audio, but this (HD660S2) is an incredible all arounder if you aren't someone that needs something super bassy or super detailed - but again both of those are very enjoyable imo.
