@@IndoGamerYT I'm 2 years late, but if you look a few seconds before that, around 1:48, you can see he grabs the cord from the cape and then attaches it to the back of his boot, which causes it to be pulled as he stands up straight. Very clever, one of those kind of things that knowing how it's done doesn't make it less enjoyable.
@@boeingnz they have tons of tricks and different ways. but in this video you can see it being pulled down at a few spots. each face change is about 2 frames. and you can see the current one going down. on one you can see it go into a slot right above his collar bone. the pink one that changes to white at 1:15. you can see the mask distort like its being pulled down by the chin. everything kinda bends inwards and down. and then you can see the pink above the collar bone like it gets stuck for a a few frames. and then disappears into a little groove. at another time in the video at 1:50 if you slow it down you can clearly see he puts something on his boot. it gets tugged on like he's tucking something in there.
They consider this a national treasure and they're secretive about the technique, so my guess it that, because it's so fast (faster than 1/100th of a second from an interview) the mask is tensioned and it just snaps when he does something, and it snaps like a balloon but faster.
The music is amazing too, anyone know the name. I was looking through the comments, and unfortunately saw the spoilers as to how the masks disappear, i didn't want to know :( Im now going to dive into chinese disco music circa late 1970s. i reckon i will love the style

Then there are some layers he takes off like at 1:15 where he hides his right hand behind the cape, jumps a little and pulls on some trigger (probably just a long string under his clothes) tied to some layers of masks. They're making all these assumptions about mechanisms and projections... but this is a 300 year old art. Those didn't exist back then and they still use the traditional methods today. Also, the secrets behind this art are carefully and deeply protected so it'll probly another 300 years before we really know.
Almost all of his switches require one hand to be in the cape. The switch where both hands are showing at 2:04 was cleverly set up at 1:49. He attached (I assume) the string to his left leg so that as soon as he straightened out his leg, the string pulled down the mask attached to it. Amazing stuff
To add to your theory/deduction, you can hear a mechanical click each time the actor changes masks. Slight of hand, mechanical and performance creates this amazing illusion, IMHO
What’s with the music? Not that I have a problem with it. It’s pretty dope and I prefer it over traditional music. I just wanna ask why every Bian Lian video I see on UA-cam use the same music.
For those who don’t know, look closely before they change the mask, they switch their mask secretly by pulling a drawstring behind there back which is hidden by their cape.
They are thin paper masks that have a thread that passes through the neck into his shirt and ends on his back, whenever he changes the mask he hides a hand on his back and in a frame between 1:16 and 1:17 minutes you can see the mask go into his shirt collar
Good job!! The only mask change that he didn't put his hand behind his back is the one at 1:54. If you can figure out that trick then you've solved all the illusion.
It appears to be a collection of paper (or thin plastic) masks that are stored in a compartment at the crown of the headset that are pulled down, presumably by some sort of string controlled by his right hand.
Ok I did that but I still don't know how it's done ..it changes so quick even when slowed down I did notice his arm seems to disappear when a change is made but still how do they flip so quick without getting caught or dropping one
i watched this in 0.25 speed and kept hitting pause and play as fast as i could and was able repeatedly to get it to keep stopping on 1 of 2 frames. first is the whole mask is red except the forehead is blue, and the transition area is a blur. 2nd is the whole mask is blue but there's a blur of red right past the chin. so that tells me the red is moving down, meaning the blue was behind it and the red is being pulled away. not blue being put over top of the red. i think whats happening is when he jerks his right arm away at 0:19 he pulls a layer of the mask away way faster than we can see. (so fast the camera is only able to see 2 frames of it. the very beginning and the end). then at 1:15 you can see just above where his right collar bone is there is nothing there, but when he rips the pink mask off first of all it distorts if you pause it on the perfect frame to look like like the whole thing is being pulled from the chin downwards. everything kinda bends in that direction and towards the middle. but then, for like half a second, you can see a little bit of pink right above his collar bone, and then it disappears. it was supposed to get pulled into some groove right there but didn't quite go all the way in. the masks definitely made of an incredibly thin paper, cause there's that many stacked on top of each other and yet you can still see the mask moving as the performer is breathing. but yeah, i think its definitely clear that they're pulling the mask down into a groove by their collarbone and into their outfit.
If you're on PC, you can use the , and . buttons to go backward and forward one frame when paused. Not helpful if you're on mobile, I know, but thought it might help if you're on PC! :)
If you slow it down at 1:14 and pause and play and see that the red mask looks like it’s sucked it my his neck. Did this like 10 times cuz the red masked seemed to be pulled from under
hey I think it's about the hand- whenever they are changing their masks they move one of their arms behind themselves, under the cloak(?); then as if they're pulling a string or smth... suddenly the mask changes like it goes up into that big hat they're wearing on. Idk just my idea thou
