Yes it should be recognized as an independent language. Not doing so would be a crime against humanity. I say this because, as an Icelander, I can relate to them in many ways. Had Icelandic not been recognized as an independent language and preserved as such then most of our insight into Old West Norse would have been lost. The same now applies to Elfdalian.
Actually, the runes survived to some degree beyond The Middle Ages in Sweden. The last inscription that I know of (outside of Älvdalen) was made in a church in Öland sometime in the 1500s. When an academic interrest about the runes started to grow in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, people like Johannes Bureus actually learned to read runes from ordinary farmers if I remember correctly. He then went on to create Sweden's first Alphabet book, featuring both the latin and runic alphabets. As a result of this, the runes became known to people of the upper classes during the 1600s, and were in some cases used to deliver secret messages during The 30 Years' War. King Charles X Gustav even went so far as to consider reinstating the runes as the official writing system of Sweden, although of course nothing ever came out of that.
As a Swede, the only way this language could be considered a dialect of Swedish was if you just listened to it briefly, found some words that sound the same, and then didn't look deeper into it. Strictly vocabulary speaking, most of it is different, and there's many false cognates. Other than that, it's orthography is different as it also has different phonetics, it uses many diphthongs (which itself isn't weird given that Scanian Swedish exists) as well as a triphthong, it seems to be basically a combination of Icelandic, Faroese, mixed with a bit of Swedish. The more I read and learn about Elfdalian, the more I am ashamed of the government, and specifically the Swedish Language Council (Språkrådet) for stubbornly refusing to do their due diligence.
Thank you for making this video about my native language and helping us spread the word about it, it's probably the most informative 7min about it I've seen done in English about this subject! I've grown up with Elfdalian and then was forced to learn Swedish in school. The making of sentences are completely different from Swedish and they are hardly related at all. It was not easy to learn how to communicate as a 6year old with people that only talked Swedish. I'm just lucky not being old enough to been beaten in School when talking Elfdalian since that part really is true. I started school in the mid 90s so it was a little bit better then :) I really do hope you will make more videos about this subject. It's also kind of related to Icelandic (or maybe the other way around) since Elfdalian people can talk to Icelandic people and understand each other to some extent. Minecraft is also getting translated now which helps a lot. We really are working hard to get it recognized as a language but our government want to destroy our heritage...
Are younger people now still growing up with Elfdalian? I hope so... every language is its own rich cultural heritage, and that it connects with runes and Icelandic too demonstrates that it definitely has something to teach us.
@@karenlynningalls5851 You have the option to study Elfdalian in Älvdalen. There is an organization called "Ulum Dalska" that is trying to preserve the language as best they can. The problem is the schoolsystem in Sweden. Not that much local teachers anymore, most of them are from other parts of Sweden and have no idea about the language. This is a tactic from the state to basically kill the language long-term. Most kids born after 2000 don't really speak Elfdalian anymore. It's getting more and more rare to find younger people talking Elfdalian fluenty:(
@@Dalkarl I hope Ulum Dalska is successful in their efforts - at least they have video and digital media to record and help preserve it in ways that were not available to earlier generations. Preservation of old languages like this is so important to the preservation of and knowledge about a culture, and each culture has so much to teach us. I know this is a problem for indigenous peoples all over the world, and in Europe a problem for Celtic languages where they became dominated by another culture (i.e. English or French). Suppression of a language is a way to eliminate a culture. I'm very, very sorry to learn that it's happening in Sweden, too.
Älvdalen is also known for its Hagström music instruments; in fact, Elvis Presley himself used a Hagström guitar. I have also seen violinists from Älvdalen perform in America.
Today I discovered this video and I was really surprised, because I actually have been in Aelvdalen in 2018, but nobody told me about their unique language or that runes were used there until the 20th century. For me, as someone interested in the past, it is quite a shame. People should be allowed to be proud about their heritage. Thanks for posting videos like this!
The use of runes were also preserved in rural settings in the Swedish province of Hälsingland (and some areas around it) up until the 20th century as the very unique Hälsinge runes.
Since Elfdalian differs more from Swedish than Norwegian does, and Norwegian is considered a separate language, also Elfdalian should be considered a separate language.
@@dan74695 Du frågade om jag jag tycker att norska är ett annat språk (än svenska). Norska brukar räknas som ett annat språk än svenska, så din fråga gav mig intrycket att du menar att så inte är fallet.
Yes it should be recognized as a langauge. I grew up just 180 kilometers from Älvdalen and my first visit there was mindblowing. I heard some people speak bit I understood no more than 10 percent if it! The same county! Unbelieveble!

I am one of those people. I speak Elfdalian as my mother and grandmother taught it to me. Growing up I was one of the children at school who knew it best, most of my peers had limited knowledge, could understand but not speak it. Trust me, knowing Elfdalian was NOT cool, quite the opposite in fact, it gave you a bit if a "weirdo" stamp. To be honest there is a lot I could say about this but my main point would be that the language is lost. At least the Elfdalian as it was when my grandmother was young and the language was still spoken actively in its original form by most people who lived there. Now the language has been washed out with Swedish. It has been mixed and muddied with Swedish words and many who think they know the language in actual fact do not speak it in its original form but a sort of recent "Swedeified" version. Älvdalen is also, whilst stunningly beautiful, a county on the decline. Young people move away because there are few or no jobs and future prospects seem bleak and dull. Those people who should be keeping Elfdalian alive simply aren't interested. They want to live in the modern world. Many good efforts have been made to preserve it and teach it at schools. There is even a grant I believe for those at school who know it well enough when they graduate. But the people who speak it well are old and on their way out of this world. True Elfdalian will die with them. Perhaps it will linger on in some form and that is nice but it will not be the same. Regards from a 27 year old Elfdalian woman who now resides in the UK. Also it is known in Elfdalian as "Öwdaln", meaning river valley.
That is just sad to hear, really! Do you by chance know the history of the language? I as a Dane can obviously regonize some of the words as related to / or similar to Swedish, but other than that it sounds to me like a Swedish/Finnish hybrid ling of some sort with influence of other nordic languages, “og” insted of “och” etc.
@@ole7146 it is as far as I know just a well preserved form of ancient Nordic. This town was so remote and cut off from the world for so long it just stayed the same. In breeding was common and resulted in a genetic defect of the eyes which can be seen in some people even now (not that this is related to the language as such but it goes to show just how isolated the people were) There are words in English which you may imagine Vikings brought over. One example is the word "windoga" (the old elfdalian word for window which is rarely if ever used these days) strikingly similar to the English "window". Swedish for window is "fönster" so not at all the same. "Windoga" means "wind eye".. makes sense doesn't it? There are other similar examples but none that spring to mind currently.
Yes, Windoga is very similar to window and/or vindue/vindu in Da & No. There are many loan words in English from Old Norse and it’s dialects. In Scottish you even have words that are more or less the same with same meaning, for exampel “Efter”, “Grund”, “Steid”(sted), “Frae”(fra) and “Braw”(bra). The Elfdalian is an interesting language and one i will read a lot more about, så tack så mycket for dit svar, håber at dette unikke sprog må overleve og ha det bra.
The language should be recognized like frisian in the netherlands. Have the people in that area been living primitivly or are they modernized like the rest of europe? It would be cool if they still lived the old fashioned way, but i think that would be unlikely considering there are like no tribes like that in europe
Our economy has modernized and we live like everyone else but we are one of the regions in sweden that have conserved old traditions and folk culture the best.
Absolutely should be recognised! My grandmother came from the Scottish Isle of Skye, she was a native Gaelic speaker, all her family were as were the surrounding community. Going to school, the imported English born teachers would beat, with leather belts called a "tawse", any child heard speaking the Gaelic in the classroom or even in the playground. But this was also part of a concerted effort to eradicate Scottish culture and history, a practice which continued even into my school years (I'm 60 now). Such things are precious and all too easily lost to time, ignorance or suppression. I hope the language becomes officially acknowledged and protected.

They used to use runes in parts of Finland, too...my mother-in-law was born in Karelia, and her wedding rug is covered in runic symbols, and (as the Finns used the swastika long before the Nazis adopted and perverted it) a few swastikas. Sadly, Karelia was invaded both by the Nazis and by the Soviets and I don't think anyone there uses runes any more.
The word 'Book' stem from the german 'Buch', as does the scandinavian 'Bog'/'Bok' - the german word for beech wood, known as Bøg/Bok in Scandinavia. The Scandinavian word for letters of the Alphabet, 'Bogstav', literally mean Beech-staff.
All the languages has influenced each other in the area, for instance some words in the english language can be traced back to Scandinavia. And since the countries in Scandinavia is part of the germanic language tree, so does those countries within it. But there is a difference from the german language and the germanic language tree, the words you refeer to originate from the germanic language tree, and not from the german language, the german language is part of the language tree and not the language it self.
Jag har i mina yngre dagar vuxit upp med denna dialekt. Tillsammans med en del andra. Och jag ser det som ett kulturarv. In my younger days I have grown up with this dialect. Together with some others. And I see it as a cultural heritage.
I have lived in Älvdalen my whole life, and it is an incredibly kind and hospitable village. I have walked home by myself in the middle of the nights several times, and I have never felt the least bit unsafe at all. It is almost like a safe haven, where there is almost never anything bad happening.
You are my favorite channel. Next time I go to Denmark , I am going to invite you to dinner at Bofhus restaurant on Vestobrogade. I go there ever DECEMBER to go to the Keith’s museum and the Viking Ship Museum in Rojskilde. It will be my treat in small payment for many days of great entertainment.
It bothers me that the only Ovansiljan Dalecarlian dialect people talk about is Elfdalian, it is not that different from the other dialects in Ovansiljan. There are other dialects in Sweden that could be considered to be their own languages.
Tank you! I think the älvdalen language or dialect chould be recognized as important part of their and our culture. Another language that don't have speakers any more is runösvenska. Isle of Run Swedish, in English.

It's not that different from the other Ovansiljan dialects, they're all mostly mutually intelligible, so they should be recognised as one language. Maybe the Nedansiljan dialects too.
Yes.... I do think they should recognize Elfdalian as a separate language!! If for no other reason but to preserve it!! Yes... I would definitely like to see more videos like this, and I thank you for the time and effort that you put into all your videos!! Blessings

I have swedish ancestors who came here in the early 1900s, and have always been interested in the Norse language and its descendents. Are there any places for Americans to Learn it?
I can highly recommend UISS - Uppsala International Summer Session, a summer program for foreign students - though you'd be learning Swedish, not Old Norse. There are other classes you can take, as well. I studied Archaeology (and Weaving), and we were able to take some great field trips (and translate rune stones in Uppsala too). I took it a long time ago, but I know it's grown even more since then. uiss.org/
100% yes it should be recognised as a language there is No reason why it shouldn't be a recognised language it's not the same as anyother language if they can't recognise it as a different language then surely no other languages spoken should be recognised as languages in that that case So i say again yes it should be recognised as another language
"Sweden is a huge country, over 10 times bigger than Denmark." Me: laughs in Canadian In all seriousness, though, the Swedish government should recognize this as a language. It's always sad when languages die out.

When I, as a Swede, have an easier time understanding Norwegian, Elfdalian has to be recognized as its own language. There's a funny clip from the Swedish parliament where they're discussing this "dialect" and its potential status as a minority language. An Elfdalian politician (Peter Helander) speaks Elfdalian at the pulpit and gets a warning from the speaker that "the rules say that in the Swedish parliament we speak Swedish", where Peter Helander answers back "well, considering that the country of Sweden recognizes Elfdalian as a dialect and not a language, I'll continue to speak it".
My ex was from Älvdalen and we were there every summer and almost all older people there spoke Älvdalska with eachother and younger people understood the langage and as a Swedish speaker you didnt understand much of what they said. but it sounded a little like Islandish with sounds that we dont have i swedish
The customs and beliefs of the Druids were never written down, and the only written "language" they were ever known to use was Ogham, altho many learned druidic scholars could read and write Latin or Greek. Julius Caesar loathed the druids because he believed they had too much influence over the Celtic peoples in Europe and Britain. Druids memorized everything, and it could sometimes take 20 years to become a druid. The school of the druids was destroyed on the isle of Mona (modern-day Anglesey) in 60/61 ACE by Suetonius Paulinus. According to Tacitus (whose father-in-law, Julius Agricola, was the aide de camp to Suetonius Paulinus), the Roman troops who were scared of the women warriors on the shore had to be "encouraged" to fight against Celtic women as well as men. While thus occupied in destroying the school of the druids and stores of grain, etc., the Roman army got word that Queen Boudica of the Iceni and her troops were destroying towns and killing people on the other side of the island. The Roman tax collectors had had her beaten and her daughters raped in front of her. The Roman army was force-marched back across Britain where they slaughtered the Celts who blocked themselves in a defile with no escape routes because the baggage wains with old people and children were behind them. Altho the Celts outnumbered the Roman army, they had no discipline, so the pincer movement against the Celts resulted in wholesale slaughter. Various runes from later Anglo-Saxon and Viking times are known about, but I've never heard about the real druids using runes, just Ogham. In any case, no authentic druidic lore or religious practices survived the destruction of the school of the druids once they were slaughtered in 60/61 ACE, and those not on the island died.
Thank you Skjalden this was a very interesting topic. I personally cannot understand why nobody wishes to support their own here? Why is it more important now to assimilate to the invaders than be proud and supportive of your own culture?
This is AMAZING! The Scandinavian runes look pretty much like an ancient alphabet that was written from right to left and used by the Etruscans, a people that USED to live in several parts of the Italian paeninsula between the 9th and the 1st century BEFORE Jesus Christ... I easily guess that there DEFINITELY were interactions between the Etruscans and some ancestors of the Vikings! Human history is a living phenomenon... in the making, indeed!! LONG live ÖVDALSK!!
Etruscan bronzes were in high demand among the ruling classes of Middle and Western Europe during the Iron Age. Etruscan letters were likely carried into Germania during trading, then moved north from there.
Of course it should be preserved, and not just for academic reasons, either. Think about what could have happened if the Americans had completely snuffed out the Navajo language before the turn of the 20th century.
It does not sound like a mix between Faroese and Icelandic, it sounds very different from both. And it is actually not that unique, the other dialects in Ovansiljan are very similar to Elfdalian.
Why is the language called "Elfdalian" in English? In Swedish it is älvdalska, and in the language itself it is övdalsk. The English spelling uses an old spelling of the word "älv" (river) which has not been used since 1906.
They live in various towns in Älvdalen. By the way, Elfdalian isn't that different from the other Ovansiljan Dalecarlian dialects, so I don't understand why only Elfdalian gets attention. I have a Dalecarlian playlist on my channel if you want to hear the other dialects.
I think they should recognize it ! it sounds like the Swedes heritage of the old language before those pesky Romans and colonialism ruined traditional cultures!.
i know this is an old video, but saying "most swedes don't understand elfdalian at all" is such a big lie. hand me a text of elfdalian and i, along with all other swedes, will understand almost all of it. i definitely think it should be recognized as its own language, 100%! but still, it's definitely understandable for swedes - at least in written form. now, keep in mind that there are plenty of other, way more common swedish accents, that i have trouble understanding when spoken, especially southern accents (and i'm fairly southern myself :P).
Yes that's true. I saw many people on another video saying they couldn't understand anything and they were swedish despite myself being able to understand almost 80% of it. I am only a fluent English speaker and I learnt Swedish at a young age so I think you are right
I live in the North of The Netherlands and I know we used Runes as well and worshipt the same gods. So I wonder did we understood the Danish Norwegians or Swedish?
Well if Meänkieli, is considered a different language from Finnish, then by that standard I guess Älvdalska should also be a different language. For a Finnish Swedish bilingual Meänkieli looks and sound like spoken Finnish with a lot of Swedish words mixed in, almost a creole, just öiie the Swedish spoken in Finland has alot of Finnish words and influences in it.
They used runes until 1900, a little conservative.... It´s probably close the old norse the swions used... The loss of h in beginning of words before a vowel can also be seen on 11th c runestones from Uppland.... I have a theory that they emigrated from Uppland then...
Yes! Älvdalska should definitely be recognised as its' own language. It's 2023, and the government needs to stop being in denial of our own heritage, because it has enourmous cultural and historical value and can open up SO many more doors for research. Sweden has historically been really good at conserving Scandinavia's pre-christian era. WAY better than both Denmark and Norway. At some point it just became taboo, and has only escallated more and more. I think it is time to embrace and accept where we come from and learn to appreciate and understand it better. This doesn't mean that we have to forget about how things are now, just adding an extra layer of education so people don't just go and think like: "Oh, you're interested in ancient scandinavia? You're a nazi!" Seriously, the shit I've experienced from people because I have a cultural and historical interest... =/
I've been there many times and it's not a dialect it's a language. I don't understand anything of it. You made a good video here exept for pics from Lappland. You should have used only pics from Älvdalen.
Not in an unbroken line, but there are people who are trying to revive customs, but much of it is based not on firm historical knowledge. There is only limited historical knowledge about exactly how the Norse practiced their religion.
We should definately recognize it as a minority language and protect the herritage. It's definately not a dialect, I can't understand a word of it. Greetings from, Stockholm
No they didnt. Dalecarlian runes were introduced by a priest and only used for a few decades before fading away in the 20s. They did not go back to medieval usage.
If for some reason it was some isolated population of swarthy non-white Swedes, the Swedish government would be all over it in preserving their language and culture, etc. And anyone who didn't support their efforts would be persecuted as "racists."
I hate Folkhemmet for forcing the Elfdalians to modernize and for almost making it extinct Honestly such a awful part of Swedish history, trying to get rid off every ethnic group outside of the Sweos
christian influence on Europe was anything but peaceful , and your attempt at rewriting history does the Nordic people's no good and even does a disservice .

"Isolated?" Sounds like the Sentinelese, could it be Sentinelese that somehow were stranded in Dalarna? As for the video producer, please make some research before claiming loon stuff, such as "isolated", "barely livable" and some similar private inventions! The Dalarna inhabitants live in larger communes (villages and towns). They never were isolated, but they preserved their farmer dialects *_beside_* Swedish. Quite contrary, they were always known as traders, sometimes far traders, that kept a distinct nationality within the generalized Swedish nationality. Their lands are good enough for farming, and not the very least barren!
Älvdalen isn't really that isolated, but it does have some distance to the nearest neighbouring villages and cities. One of the closest villages is Mora, which is about 25 miles away, and the closest actual city is probably Falun, which is about 78 miles away.
I don't think even though it is still a spoken living Language, it doesn't seem to have the use of a truly independent language to be recognized that way. At this point, its use is obvious in a novelty language that isn't depended on by outlanders for commerce, trade, and education. Justifiably, to conduct commerce with the outlanders, the Elffalian's have to speak outlander, not the reverse as in real living use language, so Sweden is correct in not recognizing it, and making it a diminutive or novelty dialect.
Kick Christianity out and look to the past and the future without that curse hindering mankind,,

What about the other dialects in Ovansiljan? They're not that different from Elfdalian.
Too bad. Would be nice to write in runes.
Thank you for sharing this!
I started school in the mid 90s so it was a little bit better then :)
I really do hope you will make more videos about this subject.
It's also kind of related to Icelandic (or maybe the other way around) since Elfdalian people can talk to Icelandic people and understand each other to some extent.
Minecraft is also getting translated now which helps a lot.
We really are working hard to get it recognized as a language but our government want to destroy our heritage...
when were you in school?
@@saxonwolf88 I started school in the late 90s. Sorry for late reply to your question
Älvdalen is also known for its Hagström music instruments;
in fact, Elvis Presley himself used a Hagström guitar.
I have also seen violinists from Älvdalen perform in America.
I actually know of this guitar. I still want to buy one.
snyggt
Is this what the Minecraft song is named after?
Today I discovered this video and I was really surprised, because I actually have been in Aelvdalen in 2018, but nobody told me about their unique language or that runes were used there until the 20th century. For me, as someone interested in the past, it is quite a shame. People should be allowed to be proud about their heritage. Thanks for posting videos like this!
Fascinating! I did not know of such a language, thanks for sharing!

I am from Älvdalen as well, lol (Västäng, more specifically).
Weird to find someone else from Älvdalen on UA-cam.
can you please write a blog to teach Elfdalian to the world?
There's a kindergarten where Elfdalian is the primary language.
Yes it should be recognized! Great videos my friend!
Wow. Fascinating! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, love from Norway. 🤘👊👊
The language should be recognized like frisian in the netherlands.
Have the people in that area been living primitivly or are they modernized like the rest of europe? It would be cool if they still lived the old fashioned way, but i think that would be unlikely considering there are like no tribes like that in europe
They live a modern life style, but there is about 2500 who keep the language alive.
Just go to russia and you find people that live with out modern technology :)
Our economy has modernized and we live like everyone else but we are one of the regions in sweden that have conserved old traditions and folk culture the best.
@@Skjalden cool!
They modern
Thank you, yes the Old Norse language should be preserved & taught in schools like any other language they teach...
Thank you Skjalden, this was a touching video. I am also interested in 'dalsk'.Ulum dalska, Ig kenne mig swettu! We talk elfdalian, I feel sweaty!
England has no culture of their own anymore so stupid of them to think it was ever a good idea
Elfdalian is not as unique as people think, it's very similar to the other Dalecarlian dialects in Ovansiljan, especially Våmhusmål.

Tthis video is amazing and insightful! Thank you for it!
Germans did not invade Karelia.
😢😔😠😍🤞
tack så mycket för informationen.
Wow this is fascinating!
All that contribute to Norse history is valid and worthy of recognition.
Thanks for the insights - save the language Elfdalian
They are, they are teaching it in preschool there, I just read an article :)
Thank you, brother!
Yes the Swedish government should and protect the Elfdalian culture & language.

Dan, I'm glad to hear that, I don't know if I can take you up on that offer, but I do appreciate your generosity.
Another language and part of Swedish culture I didn't know about! Thank you for sharing!

I can't find a Venjanmål translation, unfortunately.
The language should be recognised. The more I listen the more I learn. Fascinating.
It's not that different from the other Ovansiljan dialects, they're all mostly mutually intelligible, so they should be recognised as one language. Maybe the Nedansiljan dialects too.
Yes, we need to preserve the language...!!!!
Skjalden, thanks so much for making a video on this! I wouldn't have known about it, otherwise. How did you find out about this?
I've read some articles about it :)
Yes.... I do think they should recognize Elfdalian as a separate language!! If for no other reason but to preserve it!! Yes... I would definitely like to see more videos like this, and I thank you for the time and effort that you put into all your videos!! Blessings
Thank you, William Southwick :)
William Southwick I 100% agree!

I believe it should be recognized. Not shunned.
exactly
Yes it should most definitely be preserved and studied but most of all recognised before it is gone forever.
The other Dalecarlian dialects as well.

Not only would I like to hear some of the language, I wouldn't half mind visiting!

I took it a long time ago, but I know it's grown even more since then. uiss.org/
Very Cool Älvdalian Runes
100% yes it should be recognised as a language there is No reason why it shouldn't be a recognised language it's not the same as anyother language if they can't recognise it as a different language then surely no other languages spoken should be recognised as languages in that that case So i say again yes it should be recognised as another language
*whispers* "62 miles" thx from america

In all seriousness, though, the Swedish government should recognize this as a language. It's always sad when languages die out.
I agree, but the other dialects in Ovansiljan should be recognised too, Elfdalian is not that different from them.

I can't find a Venjanmål translation, unfortunately.
When I, as a Swede, have an easier time understanding Norwegian, Elfdalian has to be recognized as its own language.
There's a funny clip from the Swedish parliament where they're discussing this "dialect" and its potential status as a minority language. An Elfdalian politician (Peter Helander) speaks Elfdalian at the pulpit and gets a warning from the speaker that "the rules say that in the Swedish parliament we speak Swedish", where Peter Helander answers back "well, considering that the country of Sweden recognizes Elfdalian as a dialect and not a language, I'll continue to speak it".
the language isn't even debated, most people don't know about it at all in Sweden.
My ex was from Älvdalen and we were there every summer and almost all older people there spoke Älvdalska with eachother and younger people understood the langage and as a Swedish speaker you didnt understand much of what they said. but it sounded a little like Islandish with sounds that we dont have i swedish
Its a language - I believe, my grandfather was into using runes as a Druid at one time.
Dalrunes are among the most beautiful, in my humble opinion 🙂
Thank you Skjalden this was a very interesting topic. I personally cannot understand why nobody wishes to support their own here? Why is it more important now to assimilate to the invaders than be proud and supportive of your own culture?
That is a good question, however I wont discuss about politics, on youtube for many reasons.
In answer to the question. Not only yes... but... HELL YES!!!!
Of course it should be preserved, and not just for academic reasons, either. Think about what could have happened if the Americans had completely snuffed out the Navajo language before the turn of the 20th century.
I come from sweden and live in sweden And i didn't even know about this lol
So were the Swedes Vikings always thought only Danes and Norwegians.
It does not sound like a mix between Faroese and Icelandic, it sounds very different from both. And it is actually not that unique, the other dialects in Ovansiljan are very similar to Elfdalian.
Yes it should be recognized.
The kids being punished in school is like the'Welsh not' in the UK. Still happened in the 1940s 😢
My family still lives in Dalarna❤
Why is the language called "Elfdalian" in English? In Swedish it is älvdalska, and in the language itself it is övdalsk. The English spelling uses an old spelling of the word "älv" (river) which has not been used since 1906.
Where are the people that live in this part of Sweden and speak elfdalian? Do they live in a village in the woods or something?
They live in various towns in Älvdalen.
By the way, Elfdalian isn't that different from the other Ovansiljan Dalecarlian dialects, so I don't understand why only Elfdalian gets attention. I have a Dalecarlian playlist on my channel if you want to hear the other dialects.
I think they should recognize it ! it sounds like the Swedes heritage of the old language before those pesky Romans and colonialism ruined traditional cultures!.
The Roman's never conquered Scandinavia and most people took over Roman customs it was not forced on them idiot
BTW-do you know what 'Welest' in elfdalian mean? Maybe "Well is!"? TWS Be well! Å greetingphrase?
Sorry I dont know what it means, I don't speak the language :)
Welest. Äntligen. Can be translated as finally (positively)
i know this is an old video, but saying "most swedes don't understand elfdalian at all" is such a big lie. hand me a text of elfdalian and i, along with all other swedes, will understand almost all of it. i definitely think it should be recognized as its own language, 100%! but still, it's definitely understandable for swedes - at least in written form. now, keep in mind that there are plenty of other, way more common swedish accents, that i have trouble understanding when spoken, especially southern accents (and i'm fairly southern myself :P).
Yes that's true. I saw many people on another video saying they couldn't understand anything and they were swedish despite myself being able to understand almost 80% of it. I am only a fluent English speaker and I learnt Swedish at a young age so I think you are right
It is not "just a dialect" it's a completely different language!
It's not _completely_ different but it is a different language.
I live in the North of The Netherlands and I know we used Runes as well and worshipt the same gods. So I wonder did we understood the Danish Norwegians or Swedish?
I don't think so
The Ikea catalog seems to be the only source for trying to keep our heritage alive. "glädja sig"
I HAVE A RUNE TATTOO AROUND MY UPPER LEFT ARM, IT READS SWASTIKA,, I LIVE IN THE UK,,
Why?
Wtf why would you do that...
Based.
Will it Fall Down with the Islamist Influence now Facing Your Beautiful Country ?
This confirms me that what I hear from the Finnisch Kings, could firmly be true! Thank you very much!
You're a nazi!"
Seriously, the shit I've experienced from people because I have a cultural and historical interest... =/
I've been there many times and it's not a dialect it's a language. I don't understand anything of it. You made a good video here exept for pics from Lappland. You should have used only pics from Älvdalen.
Could it be possible that there are still some rual villages with people who write in Runes, speak an old Language and belive in the old gods?
The script/alphabet resembles the Old Turkic Orkhon Script (which you can find it in my username)
The guy narrating this video is a Dane. His Danish accent is obvious..
German futark...........read and learn its all interesting.
älvdalen is river alley or much cooler, elf valley haha
lol?`im a swede, and i undarstand elfdalian to 95% and most swedes does, if they are pure swedes tho and not immigrants.
Are you kidding! I don't understand one single word!!
I hate Folkhemmet for forcing the Elfdalians to modernize and for almost making it extinct
Honestly such a awful part of Swedish history, trying to get rid off every ethnic group outside of the Sweos
christian influence on Europe was anything but peaceful , and your attempt at rewriting history does the Nordic people's no good and even does a disservice .
Sarcasm is a big thing in Scandinavia.
@@Skjalden good than you are not hurt and i did not crush your feelings , just my experience and my family's .the church in our eyes was a bit more violent and ruthless in there ways than you elude to .if you like people to just agree with you on every subject , it is not much of an exchange of ideas .thank you have a wonderful day ...,other wise it was a great video ...
That is not how languages work. Usefulness does not define a language
But the big question is are they eLvEs 🧝♀️?
"Älv" means "river" in Swedish, and the name "Älvdalen" means "the river valley", which refers to the long river that runs through the village.
And we’re going to use them again - secrecy is key 👌🏻#replacism
