Thanks for reviewing these mass market entry level skates. Hope this becomes a series and companies start sending them to you to review. Would love to see Golden Horse, the Moonlight brand, Moxi, Jackson, VNLA and Chaya reviews. 👍
Thanks Nicole 😊 Great review, and I love my Sure-Grips. I sold my other skates and kept these. I love how the boot feels, the heel height and wheels. I skate more confidently in them. They’re also really pretty and the design is simple. I do essential drills on a smooth court, practice rolling with music, and go out on trails with these (with 65mm wheels).
I notice the space between the wheels lengthwise is shorter than other skates. I watched a review where the person said they didn't know why they kept falling in these, compared to the Lolly. I think the Lollies have a longer wheelbase. I have the Moxi Panthers and I love them, but I want a trail skate (tired of switching the wheels/truck just to skate on the street). I think I'm going to get these! Great review!
Wheelbase is determined by the size of the plate. Stock Lollies have long mounts (I figured this out after comparing my derby skates and my OG's to my Lollies because I noticed my agility was off - the Lollies have a LONG mount!)
Just subscribed, I can’t wait to watch your videos. I ordered these skates but was wondering what size the bearings were to maybe upgrade the wheels if need be.. Thanks so much for the info!
What would an upgrade to this be? I've been skating in these for two years (love em!) and am thinking about getting another pair of skates so I don't always have to change my wheels soft/hard.
Thanks for the review! Just picked some up through Volition. Happy you introduced me to them, they have great prices and most importantly stock size 13 skates :)
Great review, Nicole! I’ve been skating boardwalks for the last year, and while I looooove them, I’m contemplating an upgrade. This review was so true to how the boardwalks work for me… so I’d be extremely curious to see what you have to say about the Golden Horse street magic skates!
Thank you! That's amazing to hear. I'm glad you're loving the Boardwalks, but also glad to hear you're contemplating an upgrade. That means you're putting in the work! Great job 😃 Alright, it's going on the list! Thank you for the recommendation!
I was super unhappy when I first put them on and felt the rivets… especially after upgrading from cheap Chicago’s that did not have this problem at all. I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned.
VNLAs are decent skates! I have no experience with that particular skate, but it's essentially VNLA's version of this skate here. VNLAs are most popular for jam and shuffle skating, because they used to predominantly make jam skates (no heel, low top, no toe stop, indoor wheels). But when the skating boom of 2020 happened, and everyone started wearing colorful high top skates outdoors, they expanded their offerings. They're a perfectly safe choice.
Considering most “high quality” skates start at $500+ these are “inexpensive skates”. But you are right, $200 is not actually “inexpensive” for most people.
With things like skating, you want something that is not going to kill your feet and will last for a while. If you start out with a 50-90 dollar skate, they’re normally not well made and they will hurt your feet. If you end up liking the sport, you’re gonna end up still investing money to upgrade the skate. It’s better to get a mid level skate that is good for beginners and intermediate skaters than purchasing a skate that will either be painful or break.
Hello!! I love your videos. They’re really helping in my quest to pick out my next pair of roller skates. Quick question: you said in your video that because the boot isn’t super stiff that holding deep edges or doing more advanced tricks isn’t the best idea. I’m a recreational skater who probably won’t be skating more than 3-4 hours a week, but I still want to slowly level up my skate game by trying some more advanced tricks and holding deeper edges. If I practice more advanced tricks on these skates for an hour at a time do you think I’d have any trouble with ankle pain, or would I be fine? If I purchase these skates I’d definitely swap out the wheels for Atom Pulse outdoor wheels since they have a square edge, and that’s what I’d primarily be skating on. :D I’m young (19), and a regular runner with strong legs and no ankle issues if that makes a difference.
Thank you so much for this review Nicole!! It gave me so much information for what to look for in skates! Would love to see Golden Horse, Chaya and Moonlight reviews ❤️
i just purchased these and i’m having a hard time figuring out if it’s too small or if it just needs to be broken in. i’m usually a size 7 in women’s and all the reviews said to size down one so i purchase a 5 men’s/6 women’s. the shoe fits length wise and when i’m just sitting around. no pain then. however, it’s a tight fit at the toes when i start moving around in them.
You might try lacing your skates differently- a lattice or star pattern can be cute and give you the extra space you need. I started with my suregrips in a star and didn't realize how comfortable It was because of it. Best of luck!
@@OdinOddly you’re a year late 😂 but i actually ended up buying another pair in a bigger size. it does seem to fit better, but i’ll test out the lace pattern on my smaller pair and see if that makes a difference! thank you for the tip
Hi Nicole! I have a question for you, I am a new roller skater and I love it! But I have trouble using the toe stop, is there a reason as to why the break is at the front and not the back?
Hi, a skate noob here, the guides i watch say that its for the way roller skates are shaped, the heel makes you put weight on the front of your feet for better control and so its easier to use, also heels have a big role on safety too, they keep your body weight in the front so you dont roll backwards -which is the most dangerous type of accident-, hope that helped 😄
I've heard these skates are good for wide feet. Would you agree? Are there others you think are good for wide feet? I made the mistake of trying on Impala skates (I'm a complete newbie!!) and they pinched so bad!
Suregrip's nylon plates seem to be pretty tough. I've been on the very similar suregrip "Probe" plate for a few years and I weigh 120-130kilograms, the nylon definitely flexes but so far they're still intact despite fairly hard cornering and edges and bunny hops. Jumping on them has hurt my butt more than the skates 😬 Could you review the Jackson recreational skates, the Vista and/or Mystique? It looks like it's their actual entry level artistic boot but in more colours? I'm looking to upgrade and Jackson is supposed to have a wider toebox which is great, but if their cheaper ones aren't strong enough for my weight I might have to go for a full-on figure skate boot... (I'll get local expert advice too, don't worry!)
The Jackson Vista is amazing!! Would be great to get Nicole's thoughts on it - I have certainly loved skating on it the past few weeks and haven't felt held back at all (used to skated on Moonlight roller and in Moxi Lolly) - it's a lot stiffer and far more supportive and definitely has a wider toe box! I've really enjoyed it
Hello Nicole! Thanks for this video! I wanted to ask you what brand of skates can you recommend to be able to do jumos and spins. I roller skated artistically when I was young, now I am doing it again and I need new skates. I saw there are many brands, indoor, outdoor or dancing but I don't know if they are all good for jumping professionally, what could you recommend? I am in the US, thank you!
Boardwalks have been my go to primary skates for YEARS. Wish they came in pastel when I got mine! Imo they have everything Lollies have and more for a better price with less scandal/controversy.
Those are cute!! The only thing I have from Sure Grip is the Gravity Glitter pink wheels (that I shaved all the paint off of because it kept flaking, and now they look amazing) and I have the red fame indoor wheels, (I only have 2 indoor sets of wheels but about 17 sets of outdoor wheels, I'm kind of a wheel hoarder lol) but I've been wondering about the boardwalk skates and their Stardust skates...
Thank you for the review ...I love to watch your videos because your explanations are so complete and your charisma is marvelous!!! I'd would be nice if you make a review of Moonlight skates :) By the way my favorite brand is Chaya !!! Greetings from Ecuador ;)
I don’t know about anyone else but when I got these the bearings were TERRIBLE… when I removed them hoping some lube would help they still wouldn’t spin more than half a rotation so I switched them up and it made a world of difference!

“Thank goodness that’s hollow…the disco ball, not my head” lol I love your channel!

What a way to connect with students (: literally putting yourself in their skates!
Yea!! No better way to do it 🥰

Skates to try: moonlight, chuffed
Ye I just wore these today. They are ok skates. The rivots on the inside gave me blisters and pain immediately. But other than that. They are just ok
I was super unhappy when I first put them on and felt the rivets… especially after upgrading from cheap Chicago’s that did not have this problem at all. I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned.
Can you PLEASE review the VNLA a la Mode. I want to buy these skates so bad and can't find anything on them lol

Our definitions of “inexpensive” are very different 😭 but seriously thank you for this video. Helpful 🤗
They’re on sale for only $130 on roller skate nation
Comparatively, they’re more affordable. Right now, they’re roughly $130.
Considering most “high quality” skates start at $500+ these are “inexpensive skates”. But you are right, $200 is not actually “inexpensive” for most people.
My tip is to find them used if possible!

What is the measurement on the heel height of the Boardwalks?
I’m also curious what height you typically skate in! Thanks!

Would love to hear your opinion on Wifa rollerskate boots, in particular the deluxe nubuck ones
Just bought this skate

I have these skates and how would I and padding to the tongue cause where the tongue attached to the boot it digs in my foot what would you suggest
I've heard these skates are good for wide feet. Would you agree? Are there others you think are good for wide feet? I made the mistake of trying on Impala skates (I'm a complete newbie!!) and they pinched so bad!
What is the weight limit to these skates. Will they hold some one over 200 pounds?

Oh I love having a ton of wheels!! I get it. That's so good to hear about the glitter wheels though - I'm glad shaving the paint off worked!!
Very relatable review - and that's because you're so cool, so nice, and you're such a talented skater. Love all your content. :-)
Thank you for the review ...I love to watch your videos because your explanations are so complete and your charisma is marvelous!!! I'd would be nice if you make a review of Moonlight skates :) By the way my favorite brand is Chaya !!! Greetings from Ecuador ;)
What is the speed like with these skates? That's one if the reasons I wanted to upgrade from Impalas which seem so slow.
You should be able to adjust your wheels to go faster by loosening them a little bit. Your speed really depends on your wheels 💕
I don’t know about anyone else but when I got these the bearings were TERRIBLE… when I removed them hoping some lube would help they still wouldn’t spin more than half a rotation so I switched them up and it made a world of difference!
Where did she say to get the bigger wheels?
You can order them on Amazon ☺️ that’s where I get a lot of my wheels! Most all online skate shops will have them too
Hello friend I like your socks what kind are they
