Swimming Pool Heat Pumps - How they Work

  • In general swimming pools can be heated very efficiently by using a heat pump. They are efficient because they are not making heat but rather moving it from one space to another just like a heat pump (or AC) in your home. Unless you want to heat your pool in extremely low temperatures (in which case you likly would not be swimming anyway) a heat pump is the best option for cost effectively heating your pool.

    The unit heats up fast and is super quiet. It looks fancy ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxl8Od2BvnGbn1ffwqsuFXW0QnmcZgMiVY and can be kept in the living room. It gets hot within a split second of turning on the unit. The build quality is exceptionally good and is safe to be around kids and pets. This one is super quiet and can be kept on while in office meetings, my wife loved it. It shows the temperature right on the unit which is very useful and adding a rotating feature helps to heat up the surrounding, so other people will not fight with you for heat. It is right as described in the description..!! Definitely recommend!!

    Would this make sense in Northern California? We rarely go below 30’s at the most in winter and we are looking to keep the pool at least 5/10 degrees warmer and we can supplement later with a gas heater. Our gas here is very expensive with PGE

      Yes- So long as you have a gas heater to supplement the COLD times you would be happy with that set up.

    Everyone says it can't be done but I think you should be able to cool your house and put that heat in the pool. Maybe the pool can't take all the heat from the house but why have one unit taking heat from the house and putting it in the air and having a unit taking heat from the air and putting it in the water. One unit takes heat out of the house and puts it in the water. If you need more heat taken from the house and the pool don't need it then the other unit takes heat and puts in the air outside! Less power used!

    Does the unit know when it’s no longer “efficient” or Is this determined by the operator after running for 8 hours and noticing there’s no heating going on? I’m curious if heating elements around the evaporator would help unit operate in cold climate, probably not efficient.

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  Рік тому

      Yes. The Heat pump looses efficacy as it get colder. It will stop completely if the air temp goes below a set temp. This temp varies by model and setting. Usually that's around 45f. Most folks are not swimming in those temps anyway.

    Can you have both types? Maybe hooked up parallel with bypasses (if you even need to do this) Have you ever done it? Heat pump for most of the season, gas for when you need extra heat faster.

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  3 роки тому +2

      Yes this is possible. They are plumbed in parallel. Some heat pumps have processors that can control a backup heat device. If not you can always turn one on and the other off as needed or run both. They key is that that are plumed in parallel NOT series.

    Doing a pool build this spring. Live in Minnesota. Isn’t natural gas cheaper then electric? How do the two compare in running cost? Would a natural gas only make sense if heating the pool occasionally vs constantly each month.

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  4 роки тому +2

      Natural Gas heater are cheaper to purchase. By a lot. Once you consider the cost to run the gas or propane line to the heater the all in cost might be a bit closer to that of a heat pump. Though potentially less of an upfront investment, a gas heater will almost always cost more to operate then a heat pump. Gas is usually more expensive then the electric needed to operate a heat pump. For your area you have another consideration due to your colder months. A heat pump may not have enough 'get up and go' for what you want to do. I have pools that i have installed on and around Lake Erie. MOST of the those pools have gas heaters so that they can heat the pool deep into the fall season and very early in the spring even thought the air is cooler. For those customers the loss of efficacy is worth the speed of heating and added season range.

      Installing a pool heat pump in any sort of enclosure will result in massive decrease in efficiency. The room / space will become too cold for the unit to work VERY quickly.

  • @shanefernandez17ca

    Do you know if you need 24 inches of clearance on all sides of the heat pump? The Hayward 140 BTU instructions state that should be 24 inches of clearance on all sides. Do you know if that’s necessary or can I install it the way you have it?

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  6 років тому

      The reason for the spacing is to insure adequate air flow thus providing the heat for the heat pump to remove and put into the pool water. Them more air (and heat) the better the heat pump will perform. In this installation the client wanted the equipment screened and hidden so they added the fence after the pool was installed. This is not a problem and will not damage the heat pump but it will cause the heat pump to work harder to accomplish the same work load. Also in this case the equipment in located against and masonry wall on the SOUTH WEST side of the house giving it nearly full sun. The sun exposure is a huge factor when installing a heat pump. This same set up would not be recommended on the North side of the house.

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  5 років тому

      The manufactures typically ask for that to insure that even when people 'Cheat' there is still adequate air flow. If you are tight on one side you will be OK. Particularly if the heat pump is in the open, and on a South or West facing wall.

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  5 років тому +1

      You can....It would have to be plumbed parallel though. Heater one would do all the work and heater 2 would always see warm water and never cut on if plumbed in a series. Why would you want to do this? It's almost always better to by a bigger heater than install 2.

      Thats too hard to say with just that information. Size of heat pump, air temp, wind, surface area of the pool, cover type, direct sun, heat pump placement ALL have large factors in the speed of recovery. If you want FAST than you need to go gas.

    Is it really running backwards? is the txv metered into the Condenser coil? of course not we are pulling heat out of the Air, the outside air just like the inside air but outside right and so it gets cold the water is heated because we dump the heat into the water instead of the Air Anyway, just like on a boat it is not running backwards my friend. Even with a reversing valve it still does not run backwards because suction on the compressor always remains suction same as discharge line these two are fixed and never change. But I do have a question what is the pool heater BTU with a 5 ton compressor about?

    • @LuxuryPoolsandLiving
      @LuxuryPoolsandLiving  4 роки тому +1

      A bypass is not required and more heater manufactures are going away from them as the 'preferred' installation method. The concern is poorly balanced water left in the heater and then the heater bypassed. It has proven to be better to let all the water go through the heater then risk leaving bad water in there.

      That's very interesting. Thanks. I guess not all installers understand how to correctly set up the bypass. But I do believe that each heat pump has a sweet spot where the flow rate of the water gives the greatest efficiency. Maybe the manufacturers got fed up of warranty claims from systems not set up correctly, too?

      Most manufacturers have a list of what sizes will be needed for a particular size pool. Keep in mind that the overall volume is not always as important as the AREA of the surface of the pool. Coupled with variables such as geography, direct sunlight on the heat pump, safety cover or no - the manufacturer can properly advise the appropriate size of heat pump.
