- Have a go at this fingerpicking classic, written by Jerry Reed and first recorded by Chet Atkins. This is a fun tune for everyone: a perfect stepping stone for the beginning fingerpicker, and a nice change of pace for who has been working on really difficult songs!
Part 1 of the lessons cover the first 8 bars of the verse!

Thank you for all the effort you put in your lessons, Tim!
this is a great lesson, thanks for sharing.
oh hell yes!! thanks Tim
Thanks!
Only 10K views? This is the best lesson of this song I've found. Thanks
Thank you, much appreciated!
So beautiful music my friend, thank you. You have an ASMR voice too.
Just found your page, great lesson🙂
perfect, please make Johnson Rag sometime in the future :)
Really well explained, thanks for the lesson. But the picking has to be really precise to sound nice. So it takes a while even for people with travis picking experience. But it is really worth it and this video makes it possible!
Thanks Oriol! I have a video coming up on "Wheels", another Chet classic. This tune is a bit easier than this one and will allow you to completely focus on the travis picking. Just keep your eye on the channel!
Hi Tim! Awesome tutorial as always, thank you very much! Any chance we might see a tutorial on Tommy Emmanuel's guitar boogie?
Yes, that is actually the next one on the list! But I notice that I'm always starting other songs instead... Probably because I have a bad feeling on what I'm getting myself into 😂
Thank you so much Tim ur so good to do this for everyone and so clear and concise it’s Gona take me a while to nail this style with the thumb pick !! I play regular finger style but this is tricky but I’ll get it thanks Brian Ireland 🇮🇪 would u do the chords first then add the melody when practicing cheers
Hi Brian!! I usually add the melody on top of the chords as quickly as possible, but it is a very good routine to memorize the chord sequence while going through the tune. This will help you remember the song over a longer period of time.
Thanks Tim I’m getting there I was wondering about your courses do you get more detailed lessons thanks .. Brian
Can you make jolly swagman? Its such a cool song. Thanks Tim!
That one is on the list for the future! But that list is getting really long, so I can't give you any timeframe yet 😎
Hey bro, I've been looking for the second part, I couldn't find it, can you please give me the link?
Hi Abdel, you can find all the full tutorials on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/timvanroy.
Thanks for this expertly made tutorial! Could you please tell me the name of the song in the outro of this video? Played by yourself, I suppose...sounded great.
I almost always end the lessons with a song I wrote ages ago called "Now You Know". I think I even have an early (and old) video of me playing the song on my channel. 15 years and as many kilograms ago 😉
Hey Tim thanks for all your lessons
Is there any chance you could do Tommy Emmanuel/ Slava Grigoryian "Pan Man"?
Take care
Hi Joseph! I looked up the song but can't find a version on UA-cam. Do you happen to have a link? I would love to have a listen!

Hi Tim, after my wrist break 2 yrs ago I'm ready to go back on to patron if you could send me a link. Thankyou
Hi John, welcome back! Hope your wrist is fully healed! You can find me at www.patreon.com/timvanroy.
In the mean time I've been working on creating my own website, which is more user-friendly than Patreon 😉. Feel free to check it out: www.timvanroy.com
Get on with it
Chump indeed.
Play the song
È molto istruttivo ma pensa a chi non capisce l'inglese...
Indeed! That has been my number 1 concern while creating my own website (www.timvanroy.com)! We are currently in the process of adding Italian, Spanish and French subtitles to all videos. Stay tuned! 😊
