    Great video, thank you. I just changed my front pads. Easy job. Maybe Porsche recommends it but changing rotors at just 35k miles is excessive and not required IMHO. Changed caliper bolts though because of threading and torque, they are considered single use and should not be re-used normally, and they're not expensive either so no brainer.

If so would you mind sharing which you used or recommend? I have seen several diagnostic tools advertised i.e. Icarsoft POR II . Is it possible to service the front brakes with only a jack? I do not own a quick jack. I do have a scan tool that can put the brakes in service mode but wondering if this needs to be done for the front brakes and whether or not its safe to do so without completely lifting the car off the ground. @@DeadheadInABed no need for the front brake and yes you can do one front at a time with just one jack. I do recommend using jack stand in addition just to be safe. Thanks for the quick reply!
      When you said, the jack stand should be the one with all that corners weights, what do you mean? I have used the jack pad adapter and a floor jack to swap wheels before one at a time but have never used a jack stand as backup support. But I know the stand needs to go on the factory jack points which are located behind the removable plastic covers, correct?
      Also I'm assuming that because the rear brakes need the scan tool to place the car in maintenance mode you cannot service them without the entire car being lifted?
      Once again thanks for your input, your video was really helpful. I'm trying to do as much regular maintenance by myself to this car without spending a ton of money or compromising safety.

    • @luyichen11
      @luyichen11  7 днів тому +1

      @@DeadheadInABed jack stand can hold the entire weight of that wheel/corner if correct jack stand is selected, that is typically the alternative way of lifting the whole vehicle with one jack and 4 jack stands. For me, if I use a jack just on one corner, I put the jack stand in and then lower the vehicle down on the jack stand while keeping the jack in place as double safety. Otherwise, the stand is a rigid piece and space between the arm joints or chassis, in case the jack fails, it may/ may not catch the vehicle securely on the move. That is my logic.

    • @luyichen11
      @luyichen11  7 днів тому +1

      @@DeadheadInABed I think you can do one rear at a time. The service position is just to retract the eletric brake piston to its furthest position so you can release the pads, push the piston down. After putting the new pads in, the tool will rotate the motor so it pushes to the firm position. I have taken the electric brake motors apart and done it without using the scanner tool. But that is not recommended. Dust may get in and you need manually rotation the piston side back. Depends on the vehicle calibration, some may throw a code, some may not. BMW doesn’t I know for sure, but I have not tried on Porsche/vw/audi so I can’t say that for sure

    Thanks for posting. We have a 2016 Macan S that just now showed the brake wear warning on the screen. Will do this soon. Porsche's reco of changing rotors with the pads begs the question, why the wear sensors? Everything is getting changed anyway, once you hear the scraping noise its time to change... Oh, yeah, so they can sell us $70 brake sensors, duh.

    • @luyichen11
      @luyichen11  4 роки тому

      Stephen Hope thank you for commenting! There are many new vehicles equipped with brake wear sensors mainly for safety reason. Being able to diagnose the pad wear electronically and send warning to owner to display as clear infotainment message has been the trend for a while. And all vehicle status data are shared via telecommunication module back to the cloud so OEMs can use it to improve their vehicle reliability, more accurately estimate the service interval, and use the data to inventory planning. Someday, these cars will drive themselves on the road and they will have to have all types of sensors to diagnose the overall health status. Hopefully, we don’t have to pay for an outrageous amount of money for service anymore.

I compared a lot different places online such as RockAuto, Partsgeek, FCP Euro, ECS, pelican parts, etc, as well as calling dealer with automotive supplier discount. After all, I ended up with ordering discrete parts from PartsGekk instead of buying as a package(which usually has less margin for error to ensure 100% match to vehicle model). It all worked out well. Sizes all matched up perfectly and I am happy with the new rotor&pads performance.

    • @luyichen11
      @luyichen11  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. Some of the typical economy car with floating caliper type does require new brake hardware, including sliding pin nuts for every change. Those are the sliding nuts are not necessarily need to be replaced but you do need to put some blue loctite on just to make sure it doesn’t slide out. Not many people tight those back to torque per spec. In some performance fixed caliper design, the pins and bolts are reused due to frequent swap of brake pads during track days.

      There are two parts to the brake service warning. 1st part is the mileage service which you would need a scanner that covers Porsche protocol to reset. 2nd part is the actual pad wear sensor warning which will go away after replacing with good new wear sensor(or solder the old open wire back together which is not recommended but works).

      Metal composite has better braking power but more dust. Regular ceramic is quieter and last longer with less dust but usually has less braking power. I personally prefer to have better braking power so metal composite or semi-metallic type would be my top choice. It is also what the OEM brake pads are. Porsche also has Carbon Ceramic brake rotors and surface coated brake systems, but those are $$$$$ level of replacement, not very usual to see on their cars under $150k.

    So you don't have to use an extension for your QuickJack 5000 SLX? According to their site, it only supports a max jack point spread of 60".
    I measured my Macan and it's max jack point spread is 63". I assume your Macan is the same. Are your lifting block barely on the jack points? Looking for advice on whether to buy the 5000 SLX. Thx!

      Hi Brian, you are absolutely right about the Macan jack span being slightly longer than the 5000SLX max supporting length. I moved the rubber blocks towards the maximum as I could and that gave me a little more than half of the overlap with the jack points under the car. After slightly lifting off the ground, I shade the car hard to make sure it was rigid enough. I can't recommend this to people due to the safety concern but it works ok. The reason I went with the 5000SLX is that I have another track car lowered only 3 in. off the ground and only 5000SLX thickness would fit without going to the 3500

      It is normal if you follow the manufacturer’s spec and do the thickness measurement. For me, I don’t want to track different remaining thickness and get every little bit of it. It is better to just get all 4 with brand new so they are even and start at another initial point. I purchased mine directly from quick hack. I see Costco carries them for a cheaper price now. Both 5000lbs and 7000lbs are $1399+tax. Pretty good deal

    do u have to replace rotor as well? can I just replace brake pad?

    • @luyichen11
      @luyichen11  2 роки тому

      You can just replace the pads but that’s not recommended by manufacturer. Rotors have minimum thickness as well so dealer and manufacturer recommend to replace together with pads for safety reasons especially for people or cars intended to be driven aggressively.

      Because car brakes are wearable parts they run out. Given our current technology they cannot outlast the entire usage life of the vehicle so people need to change brake pads and rotors when they need to be replaced. Hope that answers your question

      @@jettaphillips5023 haha sorry I completely misunderstood. I measured my rotors with caliper and their thickness were below minimum service requirement. In the past I had rotors lasted two sets of pads and ignored the OEM requirements. They worked fine. But that’s not what I would recommend to others as OEM requirement should always be the rule when it comes to safety.
