HOW TO MAKE A DA VINCI BRIDGE // Full-size Leonardo Da Vinci bridge

  • Ever wondered how to make a Da Vinci bridge? We made a full-size Leonardo Da Vinci bridge that could hold the weight of a father and son.
    This design was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci as a bridge that could be quickly assembled with no fasteners such as nails or ropes.
    You can build a version out of popsicle sticks by following the directions below:
    www.instructables.com/id/Da-Vi...
    Or, try it using pencils (this one is much harder):
    igamemom.com/build-pencil-da-...
    Build more Da Vinci inventions yourself:

    Good video!
    Just a tip: when you go to drill the semicircular notches with the Forstner bit, it's much easier and more accurate if you gang a pair of the 2x4s against each other, edge to edge, and drill into the valley where they meet. It makes the bit self-centering, and ensures symmetrical notches. (It's also twice as fast.) Bar clamps work fine for holding them together while drilling.

    Try alternating between inside outside on each section you assemble. The friction will help with stability and you'll have a more balanced base.

    Your channel looks like those of 100k or 500k subs. Truly like the video quality. Just by the way, if you film far from where you are speaking, I think you'd like to get a mic :)

      Militancia Católica Thanks! We just started, hopefully we will get there. About the audio, you can see we had lav mics on our shirts while building the bridge, but there was a corrupted audio file when we went to edit. Had to use the backup audio from the shotgun mic on one of our cameras.

    Good job u and ur son did together.. Always nice doing stuff like that together. Longer 2x4, no notches, like the first people I saw looked a bit easier to put together and walk on cuz not so steep have u tried that one??

    You had used an 1"1/4 round wooden bar and 2" x 4" rectangular bar. Does it work with 3cm round bar versus 5 x 5cm square bar? Do you have a document specifying the load which can withstands this bridge? I am willing to build one; however, as a mechanical engineer, I am not familiar with structural or civil design.

    suggestion for drilling? Clamp two 2x4s together and push hole saw right in the middle making two half hole slots with one push and avoiding hole saw climbing out of place ...allows the guide bit a center hole to follow ...no?

  • @martyjoseph9507
    @martyjoseph9507 Рік тому

    Using this to make an arch ramp for small motorcycles out of pallet wood, thus dispersing the weight over the two contact points while preventing the sharp angle at the top where machines drag the middle.

    I wonder would bamboo work and have a bigger arch, and have maybe three joined side by side,then cover it all with netting to keep the birds off strawberries and cabbages. You could tie the canes with plastic ties. This has great potential with gardening ideas.

    • @andycoppes
      @andycoppes 5 років тому

      there is a comment in French above that says this bridge was built first by the Chinese, about a thousand years ago. I would of course guess without having researched, it was probably made with abundant resources like bamboo- probably wouldn't even have to be carried far...

    Love it. Getting ready to do a full size one for our first school Maker Faire in Perth Ontario Canada. HOw long are the 2x4s? they look like 4'? ALso save time by drilling 2 half holes at once?. Save $$$ by using 2x2 rather than dowel. I find dowel always seems to more expensive than I think it should be and you have to use a fair amount. what was the length of the dowel? it also looks like about 4"
    Thanks so much

    • @Heydadhey
      @Heydadhey  6 років тому

      Peter McCracken, have fun with it. Yes, we cut 8 ft 2x4 into 4 ft. I imagine 2x2 could work as a dowel replacement, and would save you money for sure. We planned on using 2 ft dowel, but ended up leaving them as 4 ft just to make the project go a little faster. Also allowed is to make the bridge a bit wider.

      @petermccracken8568 6 років тому +1

      HeyDadHey
      Thanks for getting back to me. We had a go at the bridge and it worked out great. 4' 2x4s. For the dowels I ripped 2x4s to 1.5x1.5 then ripped off the corners so I ended up with an octagonal dowel. Just have to carefully select material as one large knot in the wrong place will compromise the dowel

    • @Heydadhey
      @Heydadhey  6 років тому

      Adds a little work, but can save you a couple of dollars per dowel for sure. Good job!

    • @utasecretariatcharlevoix8604
      @utasecretariatcharlevoix8604 6 років тому

      For a dowel replacement, I used 2 X 2 and 1/2 inch deep dados.
      Can support my weight, 190 pounds.
      Might also make 1/2 plywood platforms to make it easier for the younger ones to cross.

    j'aime beaucoup Leonard de Vinci mais ... ce type de pont dit "arc-en-ciel" est un type de pont en bois conçu en Chine sous la dynastie des Songs entre 960 et 1279.

    • @andycoppes
      @andycoppes 5 років тому +2

      "pont arc-en-ciel", merci beaucoup, je m'en souviendrai.
      "Rainbow Bridge," thank you very much, I will remember that.
      (and thanks google translate,) he says he likes Da Vinci, but this is called the "Rainbow," built by the Chinese Song Dynasty about 960 to 1279.

    I admit it works in the small scale, but can you imagine trying this over a river? While his notebook has beautiful drawings, he is given far too much credit as an inventor. So many of his ideas would be extremely impractical in the real world.
