    A few months later, on new years eve, Blondie performs this song live on the midnight special. It sounds so much better live. She is wearing a blue pillowcase with a boob window. One of her most notorious outfits.

      Good eye. I thought Debbie's distance from the mic was suspicious but the closing drum riffs caused a confirmed sighting.

      One of Tina Turner's performances (Sunset on Sunset I believe) wasn't live either. Wonder why?

    • @VIDSTORAGE
      @VIDSTORAGE Рік тому +2

      @@psychedelic.dreamer I assume at times it was easier for the performers of any band or a solo to be over tracked with a recorded version to avoid a lack luster appearance . .Maybe they had troubles with members fighting and being tired from constant gigs and fatigued from too much partying and so taking the easy way out was the best choice. .

      I caught it immediately, recognizing it was the recorded single edit.
      It's possible they didn't play live because it's difficult & they may not have had the instruments available. The song features a Roland drum machine, miniMoog & Roland synthesizer that were at times likely triggered by the drum machine. Then there's 7/4 time & beat patterns in the interludes. There's a synth on stage but they may not have had all the stuff needed to recreate the song and its production correctly. Drumming along to the drum machine in perfect time is a challenge for even the best players.

    Debbie Harry was always the blonde Queen of pop music for me. Screw Madonna!

    • @guyinsf
      @guyinsf Рік тому

      Debbie is more rock and roll and definitely a bigger badass! Madonna wanted to be Debbie Harry when she started out but either her or her record label, or both, veered towards more pop/disco so she had to abandon her street cool and originality to appeal to the mass. Also I think that Debbie being in a bad and an actual songwriter had more control over her music whereas with Madonna she was simply a singer so she had to work with songs given to her by others.

    I wonder when The Midnight Special performers went from “singing live” to “lip-syncing”? Debbie and the band are clearly not playing live, which is unlike the other performances so far released from The Midnight Special. I still enjoyed it though.

    On their 1978 appearance, which was a few months before this episode, they played this and other songs live. This was demarcation point of when The Midnight Special no longer featured live performances. It's no wonder it went off the air a year earlier.

      Chrysalis records was often worried about the temperament of the band. Blondie broke big on a disco song, and had most of their early hits written by record label songwriters, in Blondie's case, Chinn and Chapman. (see chinnichap music). Classic record exec stuff.

    Comparing the audiences between 73 and 79 is obvious. By 1979, there were fewer people in attendance. I am deducing that producers wanted more floor space to allow dancing. The Midnight Special was losing its uniqueness and becoming across between American Bandstand, Soul Train, and eventually Solid Gold (Big Stage, but the audience remained seated). I viewed all the clips of Blondie's performance and Debbie did multiple costume changes. For her, it seems to me, it was more about the look than the music. The Midnight Special theme, in the beginning, was about the music and only the music. And this particular performance seems to me as being a dead-on imitation of the single whereas the other performances seemed live and wonderfully raw.

      The midnight special performance with the nuclear power speech did actually sound great, and Call Me on Muppet Show (though the Blondie guys would've been better on the instruments than the muppet band, haha) and some versions of Pretty Baby (on a live abum, Texas 79 or something? and Glasgow 1979 which was pretty similar)
