- Apple’s iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the world, and by extension, the most popular digital camera in the world. With Apple being the most used brand by photographers on Flickr. Today, you can take some impressive high-quality shots with the iPhone 12’s multi-camera system. But all this incredible technology has a surprisingly modest history. With the original iPhone sporting a tiny 2 megapixel lens, and its photos left a lot to be desired. So how did the iPhone’s camera system end up where it’s at today? Well that’s exactly what you'll find out in this video.

@@iair-conditiontheoutsideai3076 in terms of specs yeah they are way behind but because they own every part of the production of the phone they can make the camera still look like one of the best cameras constantly every year but I do wish they would add in bigger sensors or a bigger battery or more freedom or just make there phones more fit to the price for the specs inside but Apple is seen as almost a luxury company with a high Social status so I doubt that will ever happen because people don’t care about the specs in a phone it’s a iPhone and that’s what people like and know so they just walk in a store every few years and buy the newest cheapest one and call it a day because most people are like us they couldn’t care less about what’s in a phone

I actually remember reviewers praising the camera update from the X to XS because it was the first iPhone to feature Smart HDR
Honestly as a guy myself that constantly took photos with both of them XS and 8 (Not the X but the 8, still the same primary nonetheless). XS looks wayy better

I also disagreed about the iPhone XS, it brought a massive improvement in color balance, High Dynamic Range, & overall clarity to pictures taken with it compared to last gen iPhones.
2mp was great. I feel like most phone cameras had a 1.4mp camera for a while lol
It was only untill 2015 when they started bumping the megapixel count for the front facing camera. For example, Samsung went from 2mp on the s5 to 5mp on the s6, the iPhone 6 had a 1.2mp to 5mp on the 6s, or LG with LG g3, it had a 2mp front camera and it went to 8mp on the LG g4.

This is a great site. I know it can't be easy stitching everything together. So much nostalgic apple products bring back great memories of products I've had over the years.
Also, at 5:19 I feel like it was more important to mention about 12 mp front-facing camera that was big upgrade from 7mp that was used since iPhone 7 and the new front-facing camera was able to record 4k 60 fps and had same capabilities as rear-facing camera exceptions were night mode, deep fusion. I am iPhone 11 pro user and that front facing camera is underrated, it is a night and day difference between previous generation of iPhone, like if you compare iPhone x and iPhone xs front facing camera it looks almost identical, while iPhone xs and iPhone 11 pro huge difference. iPhone 12 pro now added night mode and deep fusion for front facing camera so you basically have same capabilities as rear facing camera and resolution is the same, but not sure if front facing camera has OIS and EIS. For example HTC 10 back in the days had OIS on front facing camera and it was good feature to have
You missed the 4K@60fps on the iPhone X, in my opinion it was an important evolution too

Nice video I was waiting on this forever. I had the 2017 iPhone X and upgraded to the 2019 iPhone 11 Pro and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference. I have the 2020 iPhone 12 Pro now and I still can’t tell much of a difference between the cameras.

This perfectly explains why my two of friends prefered a selfie taken on my 1st gen iPhone SE (2017) and the rear camera of the SE over any photos taken on my OnePlus 8 Pro (which has significantly higher resolution on all lenses except the telephoto lens) because image processing and color is just as important or even more important than raw resolution!
one plus was never known for their photos. Samsung and pixel smartphones take wayy better photos

@@realracer0353 ummm most flagship android smartphones take better rear camera photos. Your right about the front camera though most android smartphones have bad front cameras its still usable imo.

I have a little question here. I currently have the 12, and I really love taking photos with it. Surprisingly, the camera is only 12 MP! How does the iPhone manage to create such beautiful photos with a not very big sensor?

longtime lurker wanted to say your progression isn’t going unnoticed by anyone and I like the narration on the history videos. I wanted to ask if you noticed you can’t zoom out to the ultra wide lens after taking a picture anymore. I skipped the XS and the 11 Pro but now I have the 12 pro max and the feature isn’t here I missed out I guess :/
I have no idea why, but the iPhone 4 feels nostalgic to me. It’s my favourite iPhone of all time and again, I don’t know why. I never had one and I was like 5 or so in 2010.
I often watch a unboxing of iphone 12 pro and it brought me here it makes me dream more to have one, apple is so amazing wish to have one soon☹️🙏

@@nabilrejwan8135 mainly because iphone 8 wasn't the mainstream device when apple released it in 2017, all focus was on iPhone X, same way it is with iPhone Xr which was released alongside iPhone XS and iPhone 11 which was alongside iPhone 11 pro, and iPhone SE models.

What's preventing youtubers from having a consistent upload schedule, like Apple Explained?
Money and time. UA-camrs who have less than some 500k need to have a day time job as well as making videos. It takes a lot of time to make a video, record it and edit it, then post it. Also, apple explained for the most part just does commentary with image screen grabs, which are easier and faster to do.
Mostly is the ideas and then all the edit...
They honestly have come a long way

Why no mention of iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? Great cameras, same as 10 except the 10 only surpassed it with image stabilization on the telephoto camera, otherwise same processor. Traded my venerable 8Plus in for the 12Pro Max last November.
Not so much history as just a bunch of spec sheets, but still some what interesting... Would have been nice with some back stories from the engineers, maybe some insight into what principles layed the foundation to the camera. Maybe something about the software...

Hello Greg, I have a question about the iPhone 12 Pro’s Night Mode on all lenses: does this feature also work on all lenses of the base model iPhone 12 and one year older iPhone 11 Pro?
It works on the 12 but doesn’t work on the 11 pro

I actually think for everyday shots the XS was the biggest upgrade given it was the first iPhone with Smart HDR. It doesn't have night mode or ultra wide but other than that it holds up against the 11 and 12

We forgot to add how the HDR and post processing has been on the cameras. As the post processing and high HDR is amazing now.

Damn i still remember 2015 when i first got my first iPhone the 5s and then 2016 when i got the 7 black ( i loved that phone if it didn't break i would be still using it) 2020 October iphone XR (got the first iphone with my own money) 2020 December iphone 11 pro (i didn't really like the xr because it feelt like a 2017 phone with new features so i had to get something fresh) 2021 may iphone 12 pro max (damn these was the most expensive phone i have ever bought after the iPhone 11 pro) im still new to it so i will take my time enjoying it and glad im back to apple, i alway moved to android after switching from iPhone 7 and i really liked both but i wanted that premium feel again i feel bad not choosing s21 ultra but maybe next time.

The dedicated camera would still win, especially because of the larger sensors and more granular control. Phones today sre super close but also super far away.

When he talked about the iPhone X camera being largely the same, I think he meant compared to the iPhone 8 and 8 plus, and he just forgot he skipped showing them, I remember getting some descent improvements in the camera department out of those phones, but the x just had some tweaks but was largely the same

I remember HTC M10 had it while ago, I know they have a both EIS and OIS and now Sensor Shift on the rear side cameras but not sure about front.
