What is nice about you folks is having your viewers offer suggestions and advice to you. It shows a genuine regard to those who are regular viewers of your channel. From some of the comments I’ve read, it appears that there is an intelligent and experienced audience that is expertly offering plausible ideas and concepts to your hobby barn. Speaking of hobby barn, consider giving it a name that closely identifies with your family and lifestyle. One more thought... have you considered wood heat in the game room part of the new building. As you know wood heat is very comforting and does create an ambience. Heated floors is definitely a smart and wise choice.

Lookin Good Mike . May I suggest one thing we didn't do until after the first accident . We had a friend driving one of the forklifts we had and he backed into the corner of the building(did $ 4000.00 worth of damage) . I reminded my dad many times he needed to put the steel post in on each corner of the building as well as on both sides of the roll up doors so people would hit the steel post and NOT the Building . SO the next thing you know I am with a Jack Hammer taking out concrete and digging holes to put the metal poles in . There were two on each corner and then 4 on each rollup door (two on the outside and two on the inside). Not less than 3 months later one of the guys backed his truck into one of them and bent it . Yes , He spent the next two days digging it out with a Jack Hammer to replace it . But it saved the building . You might think about doing that to yours ..

I see the flag on you arm you make me so proud of you Mike, This last weekend my two 6 year old twins were being very quiet in our bedroom, which isn't normal, so Grandma got up to see what those two were up to, there they wete sitting on the bed looking into the closet, Juliana asked Grandma Is that Grandpas uniform, she said, yes it is, she asked what did Grandpa do, Grandma said he IS an Airborne Ranger they both said, IS Grandma said yes, even though he is retired hes still a Ranger, thats why he looks after this family and does the things he does, Grandma said, what he did in the Army many of his soldiers looked up to him, because he protected his soldiers just like he protects you two and even me, she said, look at those stars on his uniform she pointed them out, this is a cluster of 5 Bronze Stars and this one is a cluster of 6 Silver Stars, how did he get all of them, she said, doing things that were very brave, she said, their little eyes got really big, they jumped off the bed and ran outside to Grandpa, I went to the door and listened to the both of them, they said, we are so Proud of you Grandpa, he said whats all of this about, Anthony said, Grandpa your here to protect us, he looked down at them both and said always day and night, you see Grandpa is 6ft6 275lbs and even though he lost his right foot and half his leg below the knee, he is still a Ranger in their eye's and their protector, so wear your flag and be proud of the men and women who gave for you to wear that flag, God Bless

Awesome choice, be sure and do a zone or two, rec room, work area or if you plan to finish any other area. Even if you don't use the floor heat anytime soon it will be there. My grandpa built a similar sized barn in the late 70's and it wasn't a thing then but i wish i had it. I did do rainwater collection off of half the roof and for about every 4 tenths of rain it makes roughly 265 gallons of water. I love washing vehicles with the rain water. No water spots and i'm not taxing our marginal well.

  • @krazykeltic8103
    @krazykeltic8103 4 роки тому +40

Floor heat you will still need two zones one for rec room and bath and the other for the equipment area, equipment area only need to be kept at about 40 but can be turned up prior to working in it. My pole building is only kept above freezing unless I am going out to work in it then I make sure I am comfortable working in shirt sleeves. an outdoor boiler makes sense, but only if it has a large water tank for hot water storage. too many that I looked at had little water capacity meaning the stove burned more that it was needed because of losses.

A closed loop heat on demand using glycol in conjunction with a hanging unit to push air is the most efficient way, there is also the ability for snow melt in slab out side of garage door to avoid sliding into garage door.

M &M- I love the building- you will be amazed at how much you use it. The radiant heat will be great-I couldn’t swing it when I had concrete poured but added an outdoor wood burner with a radiator that keeps my 60x 42 Morton building comfortable. I researched the outdoor wood burners extensively and settled on Heatmaster SS-made in Canada - very impressive quality - lots of Us dealers- have been very pleased!

Hello Morgan’s from Bowman Quebec, I have a 45 x60 ICF( insulated concrete form) garage with radiant floor. I love it! Working on equipment in the winter with a warm floor is awesome . One drawback is because the garage is so well insulated( with 2’’ rigid insulation on the inside and 2’’ on the outside plus 6’’ concrete core) it is very humid. I run a dehumidifier but an alternate forced air heat source is probably what I should do.

Mike in floor heat is a great idea I use to work (Auto Mechanic) in a shop that had it & it was so nice to never have cold feet. I also have a buddy that has it in his home shop (about 1/2 as big as yours) & he loves it as well. The few things I wana advice you on is know where you inside walls are going because if you drill into a line you'll be busting concrete back out the same goes if you ever plan on a lift & you may wana heat the slabs outside the garage doors & also have lots of floor drains. Yes I'm spending alot of your money but nows the time. Love your videos keep them coming. Have A Day

Mike n Melissa, Having a Day here in NE Cecil County on the Elk River, what a great time I have watching your channel. Very well put together! Editing, content, music, family....so many nice things here. 15 years ago when I built my timber framed house, I decided to go with radiant heat in the slab on the ground floor. Best decision I made! I know it is (and was) a large initial expense, but I went with a Geo Thermal heat pump system. Part of that great decision. My house has 20’ high ceilings, as well as the radiant floor heating. We keep the thermostat close to 72 all year round, whether it’s 90 or 20 out. No outside unit, quiet, efficient! Good luck and the “BARN” is awesome!

My 36 ft by 48 ft shop in northern Wisconsin 10 x 16 ft overhead door on the north side using radiate heat ,propane mini boiler takes 3 gallons of propane a day to heat to 65 degrees R30 walls R60 ceiling insulation 5 .25 inches of concrete 5 inchs of sand tubing stapled to 2 inchs of foam
ICF frost walls did the sand for a lot of reasons heat sink. Can drill in floor and never worry about hitting tubing and it protects the tubing when pouring concrete

I contemplated in floor heat and opted to go with perimeter insulation and utilize the natural heat of the earth to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. I would seriously consider using 3" of spray foam insulation in the walls. I did it in my building, which is the same size, and I heat it on 100 gallons of propane.

I couldn't agree more, to have more than one zone.
I would also recommend that you lay out the floor in zones in case you wanted to separate the larger areas later.
I also agree with an overhead unit heater.
I can't stress this enough, split the areas and lay out the tubing accordingly.
I would also recommend keeping the tubing at least 18"from the exterior wall.

We built our retirement home in Northeastern Wisconsin and installed in floor heat in our finished basement and we love it. If I ever build another house, the entire building would have in floor heat. I would suggest, however, if your finished room has different uses; living area or play room or time in each area, I would suggest zoning the areas with their own thermostat, we have 3 zones and it works very well. Keep up the good work.

In floor radiant heat is good but only if its done right( GROUND BARRIER). if it fails ( gets plugged ,develops leak , gets inadvertantly pierced, etc etc) you'll have headaches. If your planning on wood fire boiler , its an everyday commitment ( as in sentence) Make sure you have an Lp/ natural gas boiler for days and weeks your not there ( long weekend , vacations, family emergencies) I've got wood boiler heat in mine...everything (radiators, zone valves abd related wiring, water lines etc) are above ground were I can SEE and maintain them.Whatever you finish ceiling with , make sure its white. Put sleeves into attic space from service panels for future wiring needs, and below grade out beyond cement pads for future out door wiring ie: Flag light, Hybrid electric car charging station, landscape, path lighting, etc etc.

I see there are a bunch of people saying go for outdoor boiler. I have a outdoor boiler. It is fine for heating a home but not sure about a big building. Use lots of wood and have to babysit them daily. Just a thought on outdoor boiler vs gas or oil. Good luck either way and nice building.

Are you and Melissa are put the plumbing in for the shower and toilet before you put the flooring down and the bolts in the floor for the walls than that way you put the walls straight on the bolts and do up the nuts

Have had great success with hydronic radiant in floor heating. Installed in my house in 1993. For a space the size of yours use 3/4" hepex with two zones and a circ pump for each zone. Use multiple loops of equal length (300 feet for 3/4 " works well). The bigger/colder shop zone will need about 5 loops with 2 of the loops dedicated to the perimeter at 6 inch on center. Use 2 loops focused in front of the big doors. The last loop spread around the center at 18 inch on center. Use a small stainless indirect water heater with two heat exchangers in order to use two different heat sources feeding the supply manifolds. One heat exchanger can be fed from a gas boiler and the other from a wood boiler or solar loop. This increases the system water volume also. Use glycol. Use pvc conduit sweeps to guide the tubing in and out of the slab. Also, use two separate conduits to and from the house. The second one feeds back to the house from the 15 or 20 kw diesel generator located in the barn with the big diesel tank. This tank supplies your equipment and is delivered. Trust me.

Great choice - radiant floor heat is the best. My $.02 - make sure you map it out so if you need to drill a hole, you won't have a geyser. As for temperature - set it and forget it - the most efficient way to go. Also, are you going to pour a mow strip outside the building? I'm like you, I don't like critters coming in under the framed portion and a mow strip leaves an easy place to edge against or ride the zero turn on. Might be able to make it a continuous pour - inside and out, not sure of the elevations though. Building looks great - great choices.
    Good luck.

Do a gasification outdoor wood furnace and also have an electric boiler as backup. Plan and trench in your insulated pipe(s)/tubing from your outdoor furnace location before final grade and concrete. I did this in my shop that was stud walls. I did an inch of spray foam insulation, then poly and filled with blown in. Interior sheeted with white steel. It holds heat well.

I can't put into words how efficient and comfortable OUR radiant heat is. My comment: after a lot of effort, i paid an engineer to design our interchange. We have an outdoor wood burner, backed up (manually) by an instant heater. I LOVE it! We keep our house @ 74, and the shop about 62 (just below the point someone working would sweat). When it's -5 or more outside, it's still extremely comfortable inside, always.

Definitely go with a gasification wood fired boiler which produces almost no smoke. Set it up with zones to heat the house, the multi-purpose building (2 zones), and the future swimming pool. It would be so awesome to be able to use the swimming pool year round. The whole system would pay for itself.

The disadvantage to floor heat is it takes a long time to raise the temperature. We are heating with a overhead radiant tube heater. Within 5 min you feel the heat like standing in the sun. We keep our shop at 45 degrees in the winter while we are not using it during the week. Its nice if you have a small project to just hit the thermostat and start working. I'm sure you know insulation and air movement is also key. The more you use the more money you save over time. To keep it simple we just call our shop "The Shop" . Subscriber from Kansas city

Yes it takes time but once the temperature is there it stays I thought I would need a make up air heater when opening the garage door Not I average 750.00 dolla,a year to heat my shop 1980 square foot it's awesome Mike make sure u use 2 inch Styrofoam for floor I use 1 inch it still works great but have a day

Great video, I did radiant floor heat in my barn in northern MI, I plan to hook up an outdoor wood boiler. I also put hot water coils in the cement apron in front of the barn doors and man door to melt the snow and ice. I haven't commissioned my system yet, I am looking forward to seeing you get your system up and running and if you choose a wood boiler. Like you I have a limitless supply of firewood:) Thanks!

Mike I put floor heat in the living space and I built my own hot water heater with the radiators that they use with the electric forced air furnaces when adding a outdoor boiler to the system. I built a 1" tubing frame to house the radiator , and I used a old fan out of a electric forced air furnace and put it into the home made housing behind the rad ,you can buy different BTU size Rads .Then I covered it all in furnace ducting material, and ran a cord out of it to a thermostat, hung it up to the ceiling ,ran the pluming through the wall to it .It is up high out of the way like a gas heater often is.I heat a 40 by 32 shop in Canada with it ,And saved a lot of $ not using Hydro. I use a Homesteader out door Boiler 140000 btu. It has all been working flawlessly since 1996.And I use a ceiling fan to keep the air moving ,Thermostat cuts in less. Just another option, you have lots of wood.

Mike- when you purchase your outdoor boiler to operate the radiant floor heat, keep in mind of future heating requirements. I’m in Delaware, the climate is a little warmer then yours but close to the same. I insulated my floor with 2” foam and installed a 125,000btu fan forced water A coil. Feed from a central boiler Cl6048. I’ve seen shop’s with floor heat take a few more cords of wood a year to operate. My boiler heats the shop 45x75, 4600 sq foot home and our swimming pool. Leave plenty of room for circulator pumps. I want to do a hot water heater but not enough room for a circulator pump. I’m on my 13th year and it’s the best heat ever. 4-5 cords a year is all I use, good luck.

Awe have family who have a pole building garage with radiant heat. Is heated with an on demand water heater. Regardless of the heat source they say if they were gunna do it again they’ve been advised to do a sort of 8” - 12” deep footer around the perimeter as it will help to keep the heat from radiating to the ground outside. Every time it snows it all melts about 1’ to 2’ around the perimeter
