Yess keep these videos coming lol! Also it would be great for you to make a video on how you keep your emotions(i.e. crying) under control during certain situations
I worked in community support with adults with severe mental illness. Here's my tips: 1. Use a tracker app on work cell to track activity with other community support staff members. 2. Always put important non-work items in back seat with tinted windows and under seat. 3. Don't meet people in basements (had a client renting one) or far in their house unless you are comfortable with the individual, then always be closest to the exit. 4. Any clients who had sexual crimes or a history of dangerous behaviors you meet in public places and never in the home. 5. Any time you don't feel comfortable, feel threatened, or simply get a "gut feeling" something is wrong, excuse yourself and leave. Your safety is most important. If it's a situation you feel is dangerous, call 911. Wait in car, doors locked. Seek supervision immediately after.
I work for an Early Head Start and conducting home visits is part of our performance standards. When I do home visits, I always take a teacher with me, and once I've actually called a family to schedule a home visit, I will put the date, time, and address of the home visit in my Outlook calendar and include the teacher who will be going with me on the home visit, and my supervisor, in that event, so that at least 1 other person besides me and the teacher knows where I will be at during the time of the home visit. I also verbally let someone at my job know that I'm leaving for a home visit, and I text my supervisor after I've left a home visit so that she knows that we are no longer at the person's house and that we are safe. Like you said, home visits are not always going to be welcoming. I've done home visits where I suspected a partner was being abusive to his SO, where I've sat on the bed of a client because that family's house was so unkempt that we couldn't sit in the living room, and I've done a home visit on the front porch because we were not invited inside, presumably because the family was uncomfortable with us being inside their house (we had concerns about this family's hygienic standards). Finally, whenever I enter the family's home, I make eye contact and introduce myself and explain my role, and give a handshake. I also ask if it's okay for us to sit on their couch before just sitting down.
I don't know if anyone asked this, but when interning are the students allowed inside the home of the client with the social worker to shadow what goes on??
Hey 👋🏽 I have a question: how many months/semesters did it take you to finish your 1,020 field hours full time? Do some agencies pay or does pay get looked down upon? I am wondering how long I’ll have to go without income. 😰
It took 2 years or 4 full semesters. The internships are split for year one and year two. Also, you only intern for a few months that year. The first year its 8 months (half time) and the second year (full time).
@@SocialWorkScrapbook Can you get paid for doing a practicum or completing field hours? How do you support yourself if you can't find a paid practicum?
I am having trouble finding internships in my area any advice? As a case-worker I have done home visits and I typically always bring my cell-phone, and park in the street that was great advice as my client's typically do live in low-income areas where the area may not be the greatest. I always let my supervisor know where I was going, and texted them when I was finished as well for safety. If I ever felt unsafe or had an issue I would call them as well.
Great ideas!! As far as internship placement- that all depends on what you need or want more experience with - families, children, teens try juvenile detention or foster care!
Not really the same thing but just like you keep saying keep the phone with you, I used to show apartments in buildings and at least 2 people always worked. We each had a walkie talkie. Never show an apt w out outside communication
Yes. You plug a lanyard into the headphones jack. Pull it out in case of an emergency. I don't know how well it works. Fortunately, I've never had to use it. LOL
Don't you feel your client would feel like their space is invaded if you put a video of their house/neighborhood on youtube? Love what you do but it feels like it might be unethical practice to me.
For safety reasons it’s crucial not to have any valuables on your person. You don’t want your wallet, cash or other things to get taken, left or misplaced- I always just take my phone and a pen / paper
Yess keep these videos coming lol! Also it would be great for you to make a video on how you keep your emotions(i.e. crying) under control during certain situations
Glad they are helpful to my social work squad ✨. Yessss I’ve had many requests for a video on managing the feels during sessions...it’s coming! 👌🏽

Thank you for the videos loving them so much! I just started my schooling but can't wait to graduate and start my career as a school social worker.
Thanks so much! Glad they are helping you out!
THANKS so much! we will be using this video in training new home visitors on safety!
Thank you so much for this video!! I just got my first Social work job out of grad school which involves home visits. This video gives great tips :-)
I work in behavior therapy and follow these same principles 👏
I'm applying for a couple of home visiting positions, this is a good video!!
I don't know if anyone asked this, but when interning are the students allowed inside the home of the client with the social worker to shadow what goes on??
Yes, you may even be able to complete a home visit alone as an intern-- that's what I did! Great Experience!
In the UK we will take students along but only with the consent of the family. Most of the time they are ok with it :)

Thank you for the tips! 😁😊
No problem, it surprises me when some students aren’t allowed to do home visits....it’s important to practice ✨
Can you do a video on your work makeup?
I wanna be a school social worker really bad because I want to help people but doing home visits freak me out so much 😢
I need help. So I do a lot of home visits for my coworkers. What do I ask these kids and parents? Especially for a FM case.
Have you ever been in a dangerous situation?
No, I always trust my instincts.
On point👌👍
Do you go alone to home visit or do any law enforcement offers come as well?
I lock my purse in the trunk when I go on home visits
me too
What do u do if there is an aggressive pet when you get to the home?
Not really the same thing but just like you keep saying keep the phone with you, I used to show apartments in buildings and at least 2 people always worked. We each had a walkie talkie. Never show an apt w out outside communication
Great advice! Thanks for sharing!
Great tips
Check out Safe Signal by AlertMedia. That's what we use at my day job.
I got a similar suggestion from an Instagram buddy!!! Is that the safety feature on work phones that can locate you/notify authorities?!
Yes. You plug a lanyard into the headphones jack. Pull it out in case of an emergency. I don't know how well it works. Fortunately, I've never had to use it. LOL
Thanks so much for sharing, I hadn’t heard about it 👏🏼👏🏼
You can put your purse under the drivers seat

Surprise you didn't cell the client and make sure the client home safe and get the information before visiting or that might be an Australian thing.
What does cell mean?

Jessie Toov Glad your thinking ethically...wasn’t really “the house”😉
Why not bring your bag in?

God blesses those who bless others! C God in Google!!
Should you really be showing video of the outside of your clients home? Idk when I went to school confidentiality was a huuuuuggggeeee thing...
I thought the same thing, but she replied to another similar comment by saying, "Glad your thinking ethically...wasn’t really “the house”😉"
Dont want anyone to steal that purse like yaw steal them kids
