"[The] Quintet for clarinet and string quartet of the last Vienna period, the so-called Stadler Quintet, K. 581, [dates] from the end of September 1789. Mozart himself called it (8 April 1790) 'Stadler's Quintet.' Here is a chamber-music work of the finest kind, even though the clarinet predominates as 'primus inter pares' and is treated as if Mozart were the first to discover its charm, its 'soft, sweet breath,' its clear depth, its agility. There is no dualism here between solo and accompaniment, only fraternal rivalry. The term 'fraternal' is used advisedly- clarinets and basset horns acquired for Mozart a Masonic character, if perhaps only for external reasons: it seems that at the less solemn meetings of his lodge, only wind instruments were used. The development section has a concertante air about it, but for all five participants. The cantabile character of the second theme is resumed in the Larghetto and nursed into full flower. The Minuet contains one Trio in minor for the string quartet alone, and another, a Ländler, in which the clarinet becomes the rustic instrument that it was and has remained in South Bavaria and in the other Alpine provinces. The Finale is an Allegretto with variations; brief and amusing with all its variety and richness, serious and lovable. Mozart had originally begun a finale (K. Anh. 88) that anticipates almost note for note Ferrando's aria in Così fan tutte (No. 24) to the text 'Ah, lo veggio, quell'anima bella al mio pianto resister non sà'-the acme of joyfulness. But this 89-measure beginning turned out to be too concertante and may have seemed over-cheerful to Mozart. At any rate he discarded it. A quintet-fragment in F major for clarinet, basset horn, and string trio (K. Anh. 90) was perhaps another and even more elaborated study for the Stadler Quintet; but it would necessarily have turned out still more concertante in style." - Alfred Einstein

Words fail to describe the deep beauty of this music. That painting has an atmospheric quality that goes very well with the piece.
Mozart‘s music speaks to the soul
What a versatile musician Mozart is
Today, this sounds like the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Because it is inconceivably lovely. The clarinet was Mozart's favorite instrument.
K boomer.
@@danal81 huh? You don' t know my age. Not from my knowledge of Mozart.
The second movement and especially the moment at 16:42 always reminds me of my grandparents garden. So delightful.
@@thegoalfather9922i sort of imagine the garden to be spacious with a little pond and a white gazebo with trees and flowers all over butterflies and bees doing their business and a brick house beside it under a sunny day
Oh what an understanding and love Mozart had for the clarinet and its union with quartet to create this monumental work at the dawn of of the wind instrument, such a telling testament to why his music will last for as long as humankind have ears to hear. It fills me with such joy and love.
Years ago I played the viola part in several public performances of this wonderful piece. Thank you for reviving those lovely memories !
I cannot stop having goose bumps every time I hear the first movement, and a feeling of calm melancholy hearing the second. Is one of my favorite pieces in all chamber music repertoire. Thanks for posting!
Antony Pay has made wonderful recordings. He is a great musician and a real master on the clarinet. Thank you for offering this gem.
Wonderful performance, both for the fabulous clarinet player and for the the strings, who play better than many famous quartets
You cannot simply describe how beautiful this piece is, especially the 2nd movement. Mind you, this portrait depicts perfectly to this piece where you and your friend will miss your and his or her family while on a new journey. I remember mozart composed this because he misses his dad so much ever since his dad don't talk to him.
Thankyou for sharing!!!!!!!
great info, thank you!
Such a nice thought about Mozart and his father Johnson; however, his father, Leopold, had passed away in late May of 1787. This work was composed over two years later in September of 1789. I'm certain he was thinking of his father and his mother as he composed this achingly beautiful movement. You are so right, it does defy description.
Il n y a pas de mots pour decrire ce que je ressens chaque fois que j ecoute ce quintette...C est toujours avec joie que je l ecoute. Un bon remede contre la deprime !
C'est parfait, mais oui!
Antony Pay, clarinet. Chapeau !
It is impossible to describe with usual words how beutiful is this music, with the tone of the clarinet mixed with that of the strings. It is a miracle of the chamber music !!!!!!
Mr Gerard Begni, i thank you for this and for all your other 'toelichting', it helps me for a better understanding of the music.
Pure genius and great interpreters
This sounds in heaven.
Beautiful Beautiful and Beautifu, Mozart . . .
mozart is the greatest ever. Beethoven comes close, or bach. but Mozart just hits my heart the most.
As a Beethoven follower of a lifetime I don't agree with you, but I respect your oppinion.
As a Bach fan I can 100% respect your opinion. Mozart is amazing
To me, without question, Beethoven is the greatest composer to ever live. Followed by Liszt. I do love Mozart, though.
for me without a doubt, the composer of my heart is Johann Sebastian Bach, but mozart has beautiful concerts also like this one
@@Lordran__ Liszt?!?
Бессмертная музыка Великого Моцарта ! Чудесное звучание.
I attended one of his masterclasses at the RAM in London in the early 80s. Top bloke.
Mozart's best work imo, and that's saying something.
sublime!!!
Thank You for the quote from Einstein!!!! And for the exquisite selection of the Caspar David Friedrich painting (that my art historian son instantly recognized...)! Such thought and attention to detail is indeed worthy of the immortal Mozart himself, and makes me particularly grateful for your channel, scrymgeour34. God bless you, wherever you are: hoping this finds you hale and happy.
Melancolía y, no obstante , una tenue alegría, urdida por la Belleza del genio creador
Wonderful. So beautiful. Thank you!
Magical. Such a wonderful command of the drama, the direction, the light and shade, the pathos. And what a gorgeous sound.
Great piece, beautifully played!
Whether this music was inspired by his father is anybody's guess. If so it's understandable. His father was cool. In that era music was a trade worth pursuing - you had to know people and make connections. Leopold made sure as many heavy hitters in Europe met his staggeringly gifted son. Not out of greed, or self interest ... out of necessity. He wanted his son to prosper. Leopold busted his hump on the "meet and greet tour" and Wolfgang along with his sister, absorbed every second of it and blossomed. Had Leopold failed to do so, we wouldn't be having this conversation and more importantly, wouldn't be listening to his life-altering music. Yes, Wolfgang was a genius, but in his own way, so was his father.

Mozart is the essence of beauty!
i have heard hundreds and hundreds of music and still this is my favourite, the least i can say about it is that it is sublime..
i am eternally grateful for you scrymgeour34 for sharing this work with us
Wonderful, wonderful playing❤️🔥
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 maravilhosa melodia.
Beautiful and delicate.
Native European culture is awesome.
This is my favorite rendition of this truly hauntingly sublime chamber work. So balanced, in tune and soulful.
Insightful
This is a top quality orchestra and clarinetist for this one of the greatest piece of music from mankind.

Divinamente hermoso..
The image in the video is perfect for this piece!
I was thinking the same thing. The image resonates so well with the music.
Génie universel .

I love the sound of the klarinet and the viola
Thanks Mr. Pay!
Well, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields is quite famous... Anyway, agree.
In what film may I have heard this heavenly music? I mean, besides perhaps in Amadeus...
Lovely. TY
This is like a shower for the mind.

La face lumineuse de Cosi Fan Tutte
i,m so crying
When the world crumbles, when the structures of a civilization falter, it is good to return to that which in history does not flex, but on the contrary recovers courage, gathers the separated, pacifies without bruising. It’s worth recalling that the genius of creation is also moving in an history devoted to the destruction💥

R Strauss said he'd have given up all his music just to have written this
No, he said the clarinet concerto , not quintet
@@ignacioclerici5341 I'll check it
What painting is that?
Caspar David Friedrich - On the Sailing Boat (not sure the German). Like many of his paintings has a man and woman that could be David as himself as a young man, and his wife.
And the city in the background is probably Stralsund or maybe Lübeck (probably the former, but almost certainly one of the two).

rest in peace bro ✌😎
Like this video if the song reminds you of Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, from MASH.
How much clarinet quintet composed by Mozart?
?? What do you mean? He composed the entire piece.
why do we have to have such sublime music marred by the insertion of adverts that nobody pays any attention to, especially if they actually cut into the music? utterly insensitive thing to do.
Waw! What a photo. Is the couple ''coming to the city'' in heightened expectations, or are they leaving the brutally of ''mass bloodshed'' behind? And the music,, (a super WAW there). I keep replaying it over and over, so please do not ask me why am I stuck here on this the first composition.

The strings sound wonderful. The clarinet, on the other hand, sounds like a child upon first discovery of a kazoo.
@Phil McCrevis: Your ears need a medical checkup.
You are kidding!
I guess that's why it was Mozart' s favorite instrument.😳
old fashioned playing style
18:41 *THE LICK*
At my 81, I heard it too often. So, in my ears, it lost a bit of his charm. Sorry, Wolfgang!
That was surprisingly boring for such a high KV number. No wonder it's never played on the radio.
