Yes! This comment! There is this inclination to characterize killers, especially serial killers, as “intelligent.” If you look at statistics, high IQs are actually the exception, not the rule; usually they’re just lucky or benefit from plausible deniability or police ineptitude. That’s why he did it. He also called the police and reported his own murder. It was a game of messing with the police not the killings. That’s why he stopped killing but kept sending letters until years later
I honestly think the Zodiac stopped killing because he may have got married and or had children. His M.O was killing couples. He obviously had a issue with couples and especially women since none of them survived because he attacked them more violently whereas some of the men did. The Golden State killer stopped after having children too. Zodiac would have less opportunity to kill being a husband and father and it would be more risky because now if he’s arrested he’s ruined his families life as well. That’s my theory anyways
I also think he made so many mistakes in his crimes and nearly got caught that he bottled it and stopped killing. He only actually managed to avoid capture because of police errors. I wouldnt be surprised if he attempted another crime at some point and the victim escaped or overpowered him and made him too frightened to attempt another killing but that it was just never known to be a zodiac crime because he wouldnt of claimed it. I think i heard the golden state killer had a similar incident in one of his last crimes where a victim managed to overpower him and he had to run from the crime which knocked his confidence to commit more crimes

That would be quite a feat to get into Dellen’s mind!
I always wonder what made him stop. I seriously doubt that if he was still alive, there are possible reasons for him to stop killing, but I don't think he could ever stop getting the attention. Even if he "settled down" and stopped killing because of having a family, it's hard to believe he could resist somehow letting the world know he was still around and was still getting away with murder. So, either he died not long after his last murder, or was sent to prison and died there. - I sometimes hope we'll find out who it was, but then again, you know it will likely be very anticlimactic.
I highly doubt anyone will ever know who he truly was its been too long already. People will speculate forever just like D.B. Copper there's 15 experts out there that think it's 15 different people.
His adoptive father died in 1971 and left some money($10-20,000) then he hijacked the plane as Dan Cooper and got more money. He turned into a business man and that satisfied his need for respect. He was my father Robert M. Higgins.
The Zodiac was probably around 35 in 1969, so you'd figure a birth year of like 1934. He could still be out there...nearing his 90th birthday. These days, that's not so far-fetched. I sort of think he'd leave a clue behind...so, after he dies, everyone would know about the "genius" who was "The Zodiac." That'd be the ultimate ego trip.
@@dowork002 I figure he'd leave behind a piece of Paul Stein's bloody shirt and another cipher in his handwriting. The ultimate thrill for him would be saying, "Hey, I did it and now there's nothing you can do about it." If it's to happen, it will come out within the next ten or so years. All they can really do now is let him live out the rest of his days in the prison infirmary.
Its quite possible he had kids or something and wouldnt want to be remembered by his family as a murderer though so maybe not. I also wouldnt be surprised if he had disposed of physical evidence over the years to help ensure he was never caught
@@somethingfromnothing8428 Good points. With that said, I figure him for a narcissist. He either didn't get married/have children or had them and was a bad parent who could care less. @@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 maybe. But the golden state killer settled into a family life with kids. Being a serial killer doesnt mean your going to be a bad parent and being a bad parent doesnt make you a serial killer. Its hard to say without knowing more than speculation about who he is or was
Great interview. Would like to hear more from Dr. Hickey on various aspects of criminal behavior and psychology. Very interesting law enforcement had a Unabomber suspect that was so close but wrong.
Sneaking up to unarmed people and shooting them point blank, doesn’t exactly make you a criminal genius. He sounds like a coward, maybe jealous thAt he had no love and then the media made him an infamous celebrity, which he got off on. My analysis, a huge lonely nerd that was good at puzzles because he had no friends.
His afterlife ideas of having slaves, and the fact he uses the zodiac sign tells that he had a fascination of the Egyptian pharaohs. The letters could look a bit like Egyptian glyphs.
Dr Hickey: I was wondering about this and would appreciate your opinion. I have had some experience with DID, and I believe Z to be one. There are several clues, like Z understood the meaning of thunderclap headache , and especially MIP is the letters that are questionable. I believe 2 of these are Concerned Citizen and Patricia Hauptz. The tone of these is like they are trying to protect him, also "concerned student, when he was bullied. My friend was dating one, and suddenly got letters (anonymous but they were him) he kind of acted like he was another person, and he was looking in a window at her and himself and tells her how disgusted he is with her. But that is not how he acted towards her. I believe DID to only remember a portion of what they see or not remember it at all like my friends ex. In concerned citizen letter, there are a few things that indicated he is a multiple. "she went to slaughter like a lamb" - thats what his alter remembers, not him, himself. And the other is "red dress" she wore red pants. So he did not remember this huge event correctly. I thought maybe that is why. If so, it kind of proves this was the Zodiac writing and puts him at the site, because how did he know these details? I did take abnormal psyc classes so I am not totally wet behind the ears, but just a little bit and your professional opinion is what I am looking for. Every "puzzle" has been broken and now there is even more indication of this. The general public does not know what is in these puzzles. I have counted a minimum of 4. My POI is different than yours, mine was 17, yes he died, he died at 76, Funny, he mentions coward towards the end of Z340. Mine had been cleared twice for wrong reasons, and also that he lived across from Cheri, also walking distance from DL , some of his classmates were killed by Z. He is unknown but not to law enforcement. Thank you . PS all those "ciphers" were a middle eastern language untranslated and he spent time in Azerbaijani. Oh, and a couple vics were from the Black Temple as was he. As a matter of fact, some of suspects others have, they were also members.
Paradice wasn't a misspelling. It was a cypher within a cypher. He was playing games with the decoders. Took them too long to work it out, though. Truly, TRULY a mystery for me! TRULY! (I have lived w/this for some 50-odd years.) Many yrs ago, I lived in Winters, California in a small trailer house w/crank-out, jalousie windows. We KNEW Zodiac was having a heyday in San Francisco & we were very near his killing field. He had threatened to shoot children coming off school busses & the police were following the busses to & from the schools in Winters. One night, my husband was late coming home, just after dark & I had a knock on my back door, 'way more secluded by hedges & trees than my front door. I flipped on the outside light & a decent looking man stood there with a brown paper-wrapped piece of glass...exactly the size of the ONLY broken jalousie slat in my back door. He wore "workman" type of overalls...dark blue. Crew cut & glasses. I asked who sent him w/the glass, since I hadn't ordered it & felt certain my husband would have told me if HE had done so. He was very nice but very insistent that HE would install the glass if I would just unlock the door...and I almost DID! Something just told me, "Don't DO it!" And I am not, never HAVE been, a "scaredy cat." (But he was so insistent! I THINK that was what scared me.) I finally told him to just set it out by the back steps. He finally did & he left....I think, on foot. Dunno... Husband got home & I asked him. He knew nothing about the window slat. Next day we asked our very few neighbors & again, nobody knew anything. Went to Montgomery Ward, the only store like that in town back then & they acknowledged the glass was purchased there...in cash. No record & of course, no cameras back then. The glass slat fit my window perfectly & to this day, I still don't know where it came from or who paid for it. (It was $2+change back then.) But a week or so later, I saw the picture of the supposed Zodiac in the papers & on TV & I swear, it looked like the same guy! I will swear it to my death! Did I dodge a bullet? Don't know...but I will ALWAYS believe I did. Just sayin'....
Zodiac wanted to go down in History like Jack The Ripper, so he kills only 5 people, sends his coded letters to the SF Chronicle, dissapears into obscurity, and achieved what he set out to do. I still think that Zodiac was a Police Officer.
My best friend was a retired psychiatrist. In his day he worked in every prison in our state from the smallest to the largest. He always told me to never try to understand the mind of a crazy person. It can't be done. I love the little morality lecture at the end. He's a coward. I'm a coward but I'd never commit these crimes. I could never live with myself knowing that I needlessly brought pain on others.
I think the Dr is being suave here...he speaks of the killer's incompetency possibly to bruise his ego and lure him out of hiding. (If he's still alive that is)
I wrote a book on the Zodiac case in which I have a profile of the Zodiac killer done by Richard Walter, one of the three co-founders of the Vidocq Society of Philadelphia. Walter's profile of Zodiac is that he was a "power assertive" killer. Hickey's profile closely parallels Walter's profile except for one thing. Hickey's profile is more along the lines of the traditional profile of Zodiac, which views him as a "loser compensating for his feelings of inadequacy." Walter viewed Zodiac as a wealthy and powerful man, not some loser who lived in the Tenderloin. The interesting thing about Hickey's profile is that he talks about Zodiac as being a "coward." In 2006, my suspect offered to meet me face to face to prove to me that he was not the Zodiac killer. I think he viewed me as the coward, who didn't have the courage to meet him face-to-face and accuse him. He was wrong about that and when he found out he was wrong he folded like a cheap tent and lied repeatedly to me rather than admit the truth about himself, which is that he was the Zodiac killer. Other than that, the two profiles pretty much parallel each other. Both felt the Zodiac was a narcissist who was obsessed with power and that's why he killed. Hickey also talked about Zodiac as being someone who wanted recognition but didn't get it in life, so he resorted to killing. My suspect, I believe, strived all his life to become a public figure but never really became one probably due to his aloofness and his unusual last name, which made him difficult for people to embrace and remember. Other than that, and the fact that Hickey views Zodiac as a loser, I feel that both Hickey's and Walter's profiles are pretty much the same. Much has been said denigrating Walter over the past year but I stand behind his profile, as detailed in my book. In case you're interested in reading that profile, my book is titled, In the Shadow of Mt. Diablo: The Shocking True Identity of the Zodiac Killer.
The reason they never caught him was because they didn’t know somebody who wrote down what the zodiac killer would do before he did it and also happened to have the same shoe size and stopped sending letters when he was in jail
I think a big reason he stopped killing or moved himself is because of his location. Back in that time, if you lived north of the bridges, Northern California communities were super tight knit. I think he either boxer himself in or felt boxed in and ran.
Would be real interested in hearing about how aging effects serial killers. If the crimes are sexually motivated does loss of sex drive also mean less of a compulsion to kill? Both BTK and the Golden State Killer just stopped killing at some point. Another interesting question is could TRT or steroids drive someone to kill. Say they had the urge to kill but we're able to suppress it. Then they do hormones that spike sexual desire and are unable to suppress their urge to kill any longer. Asking for a friend.
With age comes lack of fitness, might be afraid they couldn't do it anymore because of the lack of physicality. Or maybe they get old, and lose interest. Young, and wild......
I have his pic right before he died, but I dont know anything about his testorone to tell you anything more and I hope I never find out. Thats interesting.
It's strange how there's no reference to the victimology and choice of the Zodiac's victims. Most were young couples who were out at popular dating locations and at local hookup spots. You could just imagine the huge cultural shift in San Francisco in the late sixties and how young people were viewed with suspicion from certain sectors of American society because of the anti war movement, pot smoking and the prevalence promiscuity and pre marital sex. Most likely the guy was a military person or police officer who had a hatred for young people, especially young couples. High probability he was some kind of airman who was a codebreaker.
Similar to the golden State killer. That's why both went undetected up until 2018. The reason the zodiac was never caught was because he didn't leave DNA. GSK, on the other hand, loved to stick his lil pecker in places it didn't belong. Which ultimately led him to getting caught. But GSK was way more ruthless than Zodiac ever was.
@@rml1919 well we know he wore wingwalkers and travis air force base was just down the road. I guess you could deduce that it's likely he worked there.

@@josephh374 I agree that Jack the Ripper is more mysterious. There has never been a good suspect and the case will likely never be solved. It’s too long ago and there isn’t much evidence. With the zodiac however it is entirely possible that the correct name has already been put forward, and there is still a chance for the case to be solved. I think that Paul Doerr is a very good suspect. Most people haven’t heard about him yet, but author Jarett Kobek recently discovered him. “Determining if Doerr was, in fact, responsible for the crimes could be as simple as obtaining his fingerprints through military records and comparing them with those of the Zodiac, Haynes said.” (From an article by The Guardian)
I attended two of the same schools as Cecilia Sheperd many years after these murders. There were copycat murders committed by students there that were too young to have been born then. Lab archives at their hospital, Paradise in San Diego, indicate my Dr and Rn parents conceived me there. He was the hospital's chief of staff, and she was his wife, chief of nursing staff. When they told me this, I was amused. Then I had childhood friends suffer in the Paradise fire. Like many, I kept thinking that the killer came from within that church. They seemed to want to cover up the murders of my family members, even though they were solved. Think of how deadly they might want to make it to silence one of their own? "Life is perfect." Average civilians - including multiple offenders - do not acquire this particular skillset, at least back then in the pre-internet era.

Sometimes serial killers really do just stop. It’s a young man’s game and some of them just get tired.
His adoptive father died in 1971 and left some money($10-20,000) then he hijacked the plane as Dan Cooper and got more money. He turned into a business man and that satisfied his need for respect.

I’m really hoping he reveals himself in a will he has right before death. With proof to back him up and everything. The country would go crazy.
As far as the evidence goes, I think he would write a letter/cipher, store it in an easy to find place/present it to cops or maybe just keep a small piece of Paul Stine's soiled shirt (at this point, it'd just look like a dirty old piece of shirt).

@Beth Jim Sounds like the plot of Scream

It was definitely Arthur Leigh Allen. Everything lined up, and police were about to arrest him when he died.
Look up Jarett Kobek's How To Find The Zodiac Killer.
It's not an unsolved case. The new evidence found online is irrefutable. It was Paul Doerr.

Why does he look like the witness sketch 🙈😭🤣
Some just age out of it if they can make it that far but the BTK still planed on killing

Too busy with motorsickle races!!

I agree that Jack the Ripper is more mysterious.

Two of my family members. Some of those same student body members were among those burned up at Waco. "Life is perfect."
