@@OnyxSoulHuh, you literally named places that while not great or super beautiful they're still pretty safe? Especially Oensingen, its so small and even has a "rich" quartier and Balsthal is pretty harmonic and just the next village.
Grenchen..mmmh yeah, I don't like it either lol. And Olten, while pretty ugly and fully fogged for like 6 months of the year, is still pretty safe. Safer than Zurich I'd argue? The oldtown is cute and the people are nice. I worked and studied there for 4 years, still regularly commute through the trainstation and as a woman, nothing ever happened to me there.
I'd argue its more places with an immigrant count of almost 50% or more like Spreitenbach, Dietikon, Altstetten, Brugg, Baden are to avoid, at least the "non tourist" "non shopping" areas. And yeah, Grenchen 😂

In Germany it's the same. Our water is controlled very frequently and it's made sure that it is safe to drink. You can always. If there is a fountain somewhere and the water is not drinkable, maybe due to old pipes or something like that, they must declare that or else they can be sued. So if there is a sign on the fountain that says "Kein Trinkwasser" (meaning: no drinkable water) then it's not save to drink. If there is no sign you can drink out of the fountain.

Also St. Gallen is less expensive than Zurich and only about 1 hour (by train) away from it.
Appenzell and the Alpstein are near St. Gallen too and there you get the typical postcard view with mountains, hills and cows and you can buy and eat very good cured meats and cheese from there. And if you like to hike, you can do that in the Alpstein.
