As a North Carolinian, I appreciate you did a video on this. Many seem to forget how important the Carolinas are to American history especially even before the United States was founded.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I live in Western North Carolina and it’s absolutely beautiful here. Even after the flood. We are rebuilding and we will be back better than before.
Yes it is ..........
As a fellow ashevillian, stop telling people about our area all my neighbors are from Florida or NJ as it is
@@davenewman2295 lol
God bless you folks out there
@@davenewman2295 , Most people from NJ move to the east side of NC I know cause I'm from NJ .
Nice! I enjoyed this.
I was raised in N.Y. but relocated to N.C. 32 years ago.
That question as to why there are two Carolinas had been on my mind.
I love history so I really enjoyed this!
❤
I was born in NC. Lived most of my life in SC. Now I reside in NC. Both states have a weather anomaly that most other states do not (generally speaking). They both have four full seasons. Thanks for this video. I knew part of our history. Although i just learned some more. Thank you again.
Born & raised in central NC-I had no idea of the history. Thank you for sharing!
Left out of this video were the problems of piracy along the N.C. coastline in the early 1700's. It added into the perception of lawlessness and ineffective administration. Piracy was so bad that the Virginia governor ordered his own expeditions there to apprehend pirates, and Virginia was supportive of the idea that North Carolina needed to be separated so that it could be better administered.
Sounds like Washington state.
And Black beard relocated to NC from Virginia!
Thanks Avo. It’s also important to remember that at this time in history, VA & WV were one state which hadn’t divided until the civil war, which is another interesting story.♥️
The English Lords Proprietors of Carolina was basically North American feudalism. The brief history of feudalism in the Americas is kinda interesting, Canada had some too. Would love a video on it!
Tennessee was once part of North Carolina and Kentucky was part of Virginia. North Carolina had to sell Tennessee to pay of War debts and the reason Tennessee is so long is that it goes from the Appalachian mountains to the Mississippi river.
Hence, West North Carolina. We claim it all the way to the Mississippi.
@@cogman62 Back off you tar heeled Ocean Touchers. We have Memphis, Nashville and Dollywood.
Beautiful drive thru the Great Smokey Mnts from South Carolina to Kentucky. I-26 to I-40 to I-65. Always enjoyed driving thru Nashville to Bowling Green when I visited. TN and KY are beautiful states and look very similar
The separation was probably the best thing for both states. It allowed each state to focus on its strengths and develop in its own way. I really enjoyed the video, especially the graphics.
Bigger woulda made you California east
No, it allow the wealthy have to rid itself of all that dead weight. Nobody ever does anything for philanthropic reasons in America. Stop being so naive.
North Carolina or South Carolina It's the same to me. I am a Tarheel and LOVE my Palmetto Brothers and Sisters. Carolina's forever proud.
Amen Brother!
Me too!!! My roots are in both states.
We split over whose BBQ was best😊
NC native here: no we aren't. Lexington style is the superior method. Definitely not that SC mustardy abomination. Imho.
That honor goes to both Memphis and Kansas City Barbecue not over Carolina's Vinegar/Tomato based Barbecue.
@@mclyte20 NC has the best BBQ between NC & SC.
@ Eastern-style North Carolina barbecue sauce is thin, vinegar-based, and flavored with a small amount of sugar and a larger amount of red pepper. Lexington or Piedmont style sauce is similar, but with the addition of tomato or ketchup.
South Carolina has four basic sauces. The bright yellow, tangy, and slightly sweet mustard-based sauce, common in the central part of the state, is the best known. The sauce of the coastal region follows the main recipe used in Eastern North Carolina but omits the sugar. Influenced by North Carolina’s Lexington-style, a light tomato sauce can be found in South Carolina’s Piedmont and upper Midlands. If you prefer a heavy tomato sauce, you’ll find it in western and northwestern parts of the state.
That would be Texas, of course.
The colonial capitals of the Carolinas were New Bern NC and Charleston SC. When their land expands, South Carolina's seat of government was moved to Columbia. North Carolina on the other hand has its seat of government moved to Fayetteville, and then to Raleigh.
Correction: SC became the 8th state upon ratification of the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788 not 1778 as stated in the video. NC became the 12th state to ratify on Nov. 21, 1789.
The SC vote to ratify was split roughly 2/3-1/3. Delegates from the more wealthy coastal area were almost unanimous in support of ratification whereas those in the upstate were almost unanimous against. As a whole, NC representatives were more skeptical of a strengthened central government, which is a main reason why it took 18 months longer to ratify the Constitution.
Hmmm your right 👍..
GREAT lesson.
Just enough, not too much, but enough to give us good rounded knowledge of these two states.
As much history as I've taken over the years, I've NEVER known most of these facts.
Thank you for this very interesting historical presentation.
Visit Charleston, South Carolina…it’s one of the most beautiful U.S. cities. Block after block in every direction 17th and 18th century homes, the Citadel, Charleston College, the Huntley, etc. Amazing place.
and MUSC Hospital saved my life. The best doctors and nurses there. I was in for 2 months with no insurance and they still did everything to save me. And yes, Charleston is a beautiful place. I got to watch the sunrise on the beach, once I got out and could walk again.
If it were not for the current occupants.......
NO PLEASE DONT RESIDE HERE! We don't want to turn it into LA lol
A little running joke is the NC folks tell SC that they're not really South Carolina but North Georgia and SC tells NC its actually South Virginia. 😊
Two States, One Carolina
🏞️🏙️🏖️🏝️
The north boarder had a gigantic surveying error and that is why SC has that portion that rises up into NC, when it was supposed to go straight across. Spartanburg, Greenville, Pickens and maybe oconee counties in SC if the survey had been done right would all be in NC today.
Insane how people from the other side of the world took land that wasn't theirs and gave it to other people who had no rights to it either.
North Carolina thrived without relying on slavery, while South Carolina depended heavily on enslaved labor for its success.
NC did rely on slavery.
One did had more than the other lol which why one is more developed
@@FelizCumple2.0that would be NC. SC remains less developed. The majority of the backwoods of SC remains undeveloped due to thousands of acres still remaining in families that came over in the 1700s.
Great video man! 👏💯
South Carolina was the richer Carolina, and now it's reversed.
Proximity to Virginia and carpetbagger universities.

I've been to both North Carolina and South Carolina. Each state has its perks.
If you like beaches and riding horses then South Carolina is perfect for that.
If you like mountain hiking and water-rafting then North Carolina is perfect for that.
That's really an eastern NC/SC vs. western NC/SC comparison. The blue ridge mountains extend into SC and there is great hiking in the upstate. The outer banks of NC are just incredible, and nowhere near as crowded as SC's coasts.

Split was due to disagreement over BBQ sauce. North Carolina sauce is vinegar-based and hence more tangy. South Carolina sauce is mustard-based, hence more awful.
😂😂🤣 You win! Lifelong North Carolinian and I've tried a couple of times but just can't bring myself to like SC BBQ sauce!
Not all South Carolina BBQ sauce is mustard-based, thank goodness.
We have many types in SC. But mustard is awesome.
You are so right! Life long sc native. Mustard based is my preference. All respect to anyone else who has a different preference.

Fascinating history. Thanks for sharing.👍
Finally My home state of NC !!
Roanoke didn't "vanish without a trace". Please stop repeating that lie. The colonists packed up and walked a few hours south because the land there was so bad for farming. Ir's literally all documented. There's even a museum there.
I thought something like this was rational - there are a few particular things I'd like to comprehend. Where did they settle? Did they not intermarriage with natives already settled? South was a lot harder to live in, once you're so far south as Florida - where do you think they were?
@@dsxa918 They moved to Croaton, which is modern day Buxton NC. And yes, they intermarried with the natives. But that story's boring so everyone keeps pushing the fake story about the "mysterious missing colony". The trend began in the early 1900s when a play was made pushing the fake story, and it sold so well that's the story everyone started repeating. Before that, everyone knew what happened to Roanoke.
I knew that.
It's simple, we don't put mustard in our BBQ sauce in NC....we couldn't be part of that nonsense
Huge amount of Loyalists in South Carolina during the Revolution. Many settled in Nova Scotia
Only those that were the poor. For them, there was noting to lose.

Just like Dakotas were divided so the Republicans could get more Senators and Congressmen.
This was an interesting video - but I have to point out that the 2 letter abbreviation for Virginia is VA, not VI!

Very educational bro thanks
interesting video, not something I ever thought about but still good
One of my ancestors on the maternal side came to this country as an indentured servant. He later fulfilled his contract and became one of the earliest settlers in Indiana. 4:55
Georgia was a penal colony that indentured servants were sent to at one time. It was half the size it is now back in the Revolutionary War.
The split was bigger as Tenn got some of NC too.
Nice video! Thanks
The Carolina’s are the hidden gem of the US. Somehow Charleston is still hidden from the masses and people are just now catching on to how great Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greenville are. Also prayers to Asheville and those affected by the flooding 🙏
Not anymore.
That’s long gone. Put the pipe down.
Charleston is literally voted among the best cities in the world yearly…
I have lived in both for long periods of time. I currently live in NC. But moved from SC 15 years ago. I like both and find little differences between the two. The country folks are the best. The small towns are quaint. The large cities are violent and have so much crime. I avoid the large cities. I’m a car guy and the car culture is big in both states. You can see so many different cultures and enjoy the best of them here. We take family and our Christian values very serious. So understanding that you will know some boundaries to stay in when when visiting.
Oh come on. I have lived in Charlotte for years but grew up in small town NC. The cities aren't that bad especially when compared to others. What you say indicates you don't like any large city. As a true Southerner that has lived in both the each have their pros and cons. What i hated most about small town living is the gossip with everyone in your business. Hard to have a fresh start for many folks that decide to stay. Oh and I am into the car scene as well and belive me it's even stronger in the cities with much more variety. Small towns mostly cater to muscle car era which can't be beat there. But new tech, foreign imports, etc. Are in the larger cities
@ I still live here. I live in Kannapolis NC. They have a car cruise in every month except for the three winter months. As far as Charlotte it’s a dangerous place. Murder every day on the news and all over the city. Not to mention the robbery and rape. So yeah large cities are crap holes and very dangerous. Charlotte is so bad that the Cars and Coffee is now being held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway parking lot. For those in the know. The speedway is in Concord NC.
@randylear8264 ha well I have lived in Charlotte now for over 30 years and am still alive so can't be that bad.... Kannapolis huh. Saying you are from a small town is definitely relative as to me that's atleast a small city at nearly 60K... I grew up in a town called Robbins (look it up) and we only had 1000 folks so I think I am a pretty good judge of small town life versus a large city. I wouldn't classify yours as a small town... maybe more like a small city. About Cars and Coffee, I am actually friends of those that once ran the Charlotte Cars and Coffee and was a founding participate when it first started here nearly 20 years ago at the Northlake Mall. I have watched it grow and move about a half dozen times and there has always been two reasons for doing so, but it was never due to crime... The main one being size of crowds outgrowing the spaces and the next related to a few bad apples doing burnouts for youtubers. Businesses don't like that so they had to move. The last location was so tight with roads that there were traffic jams for 2 hours getting in, so most people missed it. I was one such person. So the Speedway is about the only place left that can handle the crowds. Lots of folks live and work here and most are good people. The city also has alot to offer in other ways but is too numerous to list here.
@@panzer948 does not change my original post. Facts are facts. Charlotte is a big city with a large population. More people live than die. We are talking percentages. I have lived in both Carolina’s for all my life. I watched them change. Give me ( my own personal opinion) the small town life. And if you want to classify it as a small city that is your prerogative. Most would say small town living. So you do watch the news and you do see the killing every day. My view. I watched it over the years from an occasional report to every single day a report of murder to multiple murders. As far as cars go I have both. Old muscle cars to old Japanese turbo cars. I enjoy both and work on my own stuff. Plenty of places to have Cars and Coffee in the city of Charlotte. But they chose the speedway for many reasons. The reason I go is because I do not have to go into Charlotte. And I am sure others have the same reason. I do pray Charlotte gets cleaned up and lawful. Make it a safe place for those who live there. Just like I remember from the 70s. But attitudes have to change and love has to grow.
@randylear8264 Of course it doesn’t change you original post and you answered the reason why in said post, Charlotte does have more people than small towns/cities so you are going to have more crime. That doesn’t mean that everyone is bad though. Like I said, pros and cons. There are cons to living in a big city but are pros too. Obviously since more people live here, there must be a few pros… Sadly, more people are moving here as well, so for better or worse, something must be going right. Personally, I am looking at retiring in a few years and when I do, I am ready to move to a smaller town but it’s not because of crime as I think crime can hit you anywhere. I simply want to go to a slower pace and have more land to breath. I simply replied to your comment because you indicated it was so crime ridden that it wasn’t safe to live here and that is flat out not true. Maybe if you lived in the slums but there are plenty of nice neighborhoods in Charlotte. I am old enough to remember the 70s too and what you are talking about is a bigger problem with our culture in general and not just a single city. That really should be the focus to “cleaning things up”.
As far as Cars and Coffee is concerned, I explained to you the reasons why and I promise you I am correct in that. Now, if more folks go now due to it being in an adjacent city because they are scared to drive into the big bad city limits of Charlotte, well then that is their misinformed problem. But I can assure you its mostly due to size of the crowd it attracts. Heck, we once were meeting in the old Charlotte Hornets Coliseum parking lot off of Tyvola and out grew that. Like I said, the last place they held it was in Matthews and the parking area was fine, it was just that it was fed by a bunch of 2 lane roads that couldn’t handle the thousands of cars trying to get there at once. I was one of them… You can believe what you want though since I am obviously not going to change your mind.
And yes, when I was growing up, us Robbins folks would have called Kannapolis the “big city”. I mean you were only 60 larger than my hometown. How does that size difference percent line up when comparing Kannapolis to Charlotte? I bet there are some folks that never left Robbins that, to this day, say the same thing about Kannapolis that you are saying about Charlotte. How does that make you feel? As they say, it’s all relative.
Maybe we can just agree to disagree. I have led a successful career in Charlotte and work in an industry that small towns don't usually support. I enjoyed growing up in a small town but feel I should also defend something that is a bit of a stretch too. I understand more than most that big city life isn't for all.

I took South Carolina History in the 8th Grade at Dent Middle School in Columbia, SC. Dr. Hamm was my teacher. I had learned that Carolina had split because the territory was so large. Never would have known South Carolina was the most wealthy. Most likely starting shifting after the Civil War
Wealthy from slave labor. Don’t be stupid.
@3rdeyelionheart That's exactly why I stated that the wealth disparity shifted between NC and SC at the conclusion of the Civil War due to slavery being abolished. If you would read my comment more carefully, you could see that.
Tennessee was split off North Carolina, finally became a separate state in 1796, after a couple of separation tries (rebellions).
Good video.
My NC License Plate says, "First in Freedom"... NOT "ninth". Do any historians know what questionable piece of history allows NC to boast "First in Freedom?

Piedmont NC and love my state despite all the transplants we keep getting
My family has an oral history that the last royal governor was a member of our family. ....He was supposed to be the last governor before the split. Who knows more details?
I had always thought the split was so we wouldn't end up like "Florida man". Devide the dumb headlines between two states, and it sounds more normal.
Wish Florida had splitted. North FL nothing like South FL 😂
They were split for the same reasons the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Massachusetts & Maine) & Pennsylvania Colony (PA & Delaware) were. The interests of the people diverged.

@@jjlynchee961haha. Kind of true..
Having lived in both NC and SC, I prefer NC for many reasons. SC is a debtor state with awful roads.
Nc roads are awful also.
Meanwhile North & South Dakota: I know where this is going
North and South Dakota exist literally because Republicans at the time wanted to protect their Senate majority by adding 4 new Senators in states that were likely to vote Republican. Where if the Dakota Territory had been made a single state, they would've only gotten 2 new Senators.
And it worked perfectly for them. Democrats gained a significant House majority in the next election, but thanks to splitting the Dakotas, Republicans held onto a narrow Senate majority.
Imagine if states didn't split? We probably would have more attractions 😅
And now in south Carolina average rent is 1,600 a month!
North Carolina wanted to pick its on cotton. We didn’t.
Cotton farmers and tobacco farmers don’t get along.
South Carolina’s wealth in this time was from rice and indigo. Cotton would be after Revolution.
I have an ancestor named John Morris that arrived at Jamestown at the age of 19 in 1614 and promptly bought 150 kegs of tobacco to ship back to England to pay for supplies and passage for his wife. We think both were Jews since nobody has been able to trace their lineage in England. The Virginia Company was inept and their colony administrators corrupt so new colonists left the colony to cut their own deals for land with the native tribes. By 1620 John Morris, his pregnant wife and three children were living by the Albemarle Estuary amongst tribes hostile to the Virginia Colony. John had set up a logging and lumber operation using indentured servants he bought from pirates and privateers who also supplied him with captured manufactured goods, rum, seeds and livestock. He paid his servants wages that raised more than enough crops and livestock to feed themselves, nearby natives and the pirates / privateers. We don't know much about John between 1614 and when the Virginia Colony capital was moved to Williamsburg due to all of the colony's records being destroyed when Bacon's rebels burned Jamestown to the ground. John and his wife had 7 children that lived to have big families of their own. Some stayed behind in the work communities they founded while others continued chopping their way to the west clearing land that they sold for farming. The new colony of Carolina was given the land north of the Albemarle Estuary since the Virginia Colony had no use for the huge swampy region. When slavery became legal due to a severe labor shortage, John bought slaves to work as paid indentured servants to ensure that they wouldn't run away and stay with him as employees after 7 years had past as Freemen. My branch of his family tree was too far west to get involved with the Revolutionary War.
Because we heard something about mustard in BBQ sauce and we said nope and took off.
Please explain , where did the southern language come from ? Nobody in England has the southern language .
Adopting an English accent, or at least trying to, became fashionable in the south. Mix that with some of the other accents that already got brought into the region, and you get the southern accent. I know northerners who moved to the south years ago who are now speaking with southern accents. I don't think the adoption of the accent was intentional. They were immersed in it and probably didn't know they ever picked it up.
There are MANY distinct southern accents that vary from state to state, and NC has more specific dialects than most other southern states. But... England has many accents, too. Regional dialects develop over time, no matter where you are! 😉
Nobody in England was speaking in the modern accent in 1700. The vowel shift that turned dance into dahnce was much later
@@Adiscretefirm Received Pronunciation came into being in England around 1780. Until then England and the the Colonies sounded much alike.

I don't know what y'all are talking about but if it aint money it ain't correct. Because we are embarrassed by our neighbors to the south.
I wonder if Cary's Rebellion is where Cary, NC gets its name?
Given NC’s tendency to name counties and towns after historically significant figures it’s entirely possible that Cary was named after Deputy Governor Thomas Cary.
The locals call it "Community of Arrogant Relocated Yankees" ;)
That map is amazing! Today I learned that the Virgin Islands (VI) are located just north of the Carolinas.
Good job. 😂
Ah so that's what happened. This hardly ever gets explained as far as I know. It's important to know how things came to be if you're going to understand today.
Never forget north Carolina is South Carolinas s red headed step sister
Both Caroline states are beautiful, but it does not matter. At the end of the day, all Carolinas. History is so rich and beautiful old homes.
Raise you hands....know anybody who got their land from the King's grant?
It was originally "Carolana" Latin for" Charles land or land of Charles" like Louisiana, Indiana, Montana etc. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, King Charles wife is the namesake of this City!
No. The blacks were not wold into slavery in the carolinas, but in fact were sold as slaves by markets in the west of africa like in Ghana. They were sold by the locals to profit both them-sometimes with guns, to the European, who sold these slaves for rumm which they then in turn bought guns to by more slaves; a very lucrative and addictive business, which even morality found it hard to break.
Ah, so if black people sold other black people then American slavery is OK? But what about those that were kidnapped on their way back to the slave ships? Tough luck?
Because 50 sounds better than 49.
I think its also perhaps reverent to mention Charlotte's role in challenging the crown for which the city is known as the hornet's nest.
At 8:12, the narrator says that on May 23rd, 1778, South Carolina became the 8th US State and that NC became the 12th US state the following year. This is wildly inaccurate.
So it wasn't so a guy could make the South of the Border tourist trap?
Why are the Dakotas split in 2 states?
So that Republicans could gain 4 additional Senate seats instead of just 2. That's literally all there was to it.
The same reason the Virginia and everything else is: rich vs poor. That's the American way. Lots of people want to split California in half. Some still do.
They split cuz they're dumb and can't work together to fund each other 😅
Georgia / Tennessee was also part of the Carolina's as well.
What about North Dekoda and South Dakota .
They will do that at some point ofc lol
They were never one. Each state started as separate colonies which made its own contributions to the colonial and revolutionary periods. Charleston was the first permanent settlement. They took slightly different pathways through the colonial and early nationhood time frame.
I thought it was because James Taylor wrote that song?
This computer generated narration made it impossible for me to watch. Why can't you just hire a human to do it?
