I am having to do something similar in my older house to what you did here. My fan's mounting bracket is recessed in the ceiling causing the canopy cover to also be recessed. I have to cut out notches in the drywall (not as big as the ones you had to cut) to insert the screws attaching the canopy cover to the mounting bracket. The medallion must be installed after the fan is secured and in place. Pain in the ass!
