    A big reason I've recently learned about that causes a lot of hooks is the "whip'/turnover moment is happening too fast, golfer trying to swing with arms too much which causes them to forget about turning their body in sync. Keeping the body turning hard through impact slows the moment of whip in relation and allows timing up the turn over easier allowing you to square the club at impact more consistently.

    I presume it would also be a good idea to avoid drivers and woods which have a built in draw bias?

    Thank you, I recently having this issue and I made it worse. I thought if I swing more from inside I would solve my problem. This caused worse hooks. I love your video timing and I would have never tried to swing more around me. Thhank you! Can't wait to try this tomorrow at range.

    Can you do a video showing how to over draw or hook the ball? Please also give us a video on consistently hitting the ball on the center to toe side of the club with a closed to path club face and how the body and hands feel. Thanks for the great content.

    hanging back too much also closes the clubface viciously causing the snap hook at least that's what was causing mine as the hands race ahead of the body when you release, try and keep turnign forward through the shot to fix it

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  5 років тому +2

      Hey Scott, a grip change will often change the face angle through the swing. I’d guess that it’s the correct change but will just need a little time to adjust or may require another tweak to line everything back up 👍

    I liked this video, although it is likely not enough for me. I had already sort of figured this out on my own and by watching practice swings of PGA pros on TV. It always looks to me as if their practice swings are outside to in, like this video, except probably not with a wide open club face. I have been trying to do this on the range and on the course to get rid of my hook.
    When I swing inside out (going by how I am trying to swing and how the swing feels) I tend to get a nasty "duck" hook. If I try to hold the club face open, sometimes it works, but more often I get a block or the dreaded double cross in which I set up aiming left expecting a fade, and the club face somehow does not stay open. Nasty. Ugly.
    So when I go with the outside in swing, it works better. For one thing the ball flies higher. It also seems like a higher percentage of the shots end up in the fairway. Sometimes I hit the ball too high and/or with too much fade/slice, but I still like that shot better than the snap hook. Sometimes I still get the double cross, which I really don't like, because it tends to be long and, if not gone, at least in a very bad place.
    So I am trying to work my way toward something more dependable. It seems like the way to do this would be to swing toward the target, rather than inside out or outside in, and adjust the clubface until the ball goes straight or does not curve too much. Unfortunately I have not found a way to do this consistently. I must be doing something that causes the club face to shut down on some shots and stay too open on others, but I can't figure out what it is. I suspect I am not alone in this. Although the symptoms may vary, many of us share the problem of not understanding what is causing our errant shots, other than LOFT (Lack Of Flipping Talent).

    Also try opening the face a little more at address. I tend to have to open the face at about 45 degree angle to target line on a draw because I tend to shut the face also stop putting forward shaft lean on your handle at address or hooding the face. If you do have the handle forward open the face even more. I tend to have a little bit of a smidgen of forward shaft lean just how I learned to hit a draw. That dynamically closes the face so I have to open the face more when I do so.

    Hi Chris. I have a reasonably consistent game, but have an occasional tendency to pull the ball off the tee, especially when attempting a draw, often so severely as to require a reload which is costing me good rounds. I like to shape the ball both ways but play predominantly with a fade as my go to. My trackman face and path and strike numbers are all fairly consistent. Any suggestions for drills/ on course ideas to avoid the dreaded pull when a left miss is dead?

  • @TheJerseyNinja
    @TheJerseyNinja 2 роки тому +2

    I used to slice it bad, then I tamed it back to a hard fade/light slice, then I finally tried a few things and fixed it to a very very slight fade or dead straight and I was happy. Then all of a sudden the last few rounds it’s as if my body has completely forgotten what I’ve been doing to swing that way and now I’m hooking it off the tee like crazy and it’s frustrating me so much. I think my issue is I’m used to closing the club face a bit at address because I used to naturally open up a little on my downswing, but maybe now I’m not doing that so my face is closed and for some reason I may be either going in a straight line with my swing path or back to outside to in instead of inside to out. I’m gonna try standing just a little bit further away now to force myself to go OUT at the ball rather than coming in, and I’ll try my same setup with my hands but opening the club face a little bit more to see if that works but I honestly think my body tries to just correct itself mid swing when I try these things out and it corrects itself back to some kind of hybrid of what I used to do and what I had been doing well recently and now I can’t really even tell what’s going on with my body when I’m swinging because it feels so odd. I guess I’ll just have to slow my swing down a bit in order to force my body to keep the swing I want while focusing on applying the changes I need

    I used to do this every time (for years), then someone pointed out my grip being wrong. You need to grip the club slightly in front of dead center (towards where you're hitting), which opens up the face of the club. I fixed that, then got a stiff flex shaft driver (used to have regular flex) and now I crush drives. It was like a miracle occurred and it was so simple (just felt weird at first).

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  5 років тому

      Personally I would disagree, this drill is to move path left, not all golfers with a left path are steep. Also in my experience golfers who hook the ball could often do with reducing the ‘up’ through impact 👍

    • @ChrisRyanGolf

      I agree that moving path left can change attack angle and there is a correlation, but I don’t see the pop up as an issue and if generally see this when attack gets towards -3/4 and I don’t see this drill causing that, this is also a drill, so it’s to create a feel and create a concept for that’s required to reduce the rightward path and closed face. 👍

    It sound to me Chris has this one perhaps wrong.. This kind of hook which starts of right at the target is not due to in-out swing, more likely bad grip as club turns when "rolling" inside to palm etc.
