I could not agree more! I had to turn it off after literally one minute. Ugh, I can not understand WHY it is considered essential to have overly loud background music when someone is talking.

The background music was unbearable and very distracting. The discussion could have been interesting if there had been a real debate with opposite ideas, but there was none.
Painting, music, writing and so on reflect the state of the consciousness of any society, whether its on a cave wall or in a Stradivarias violin. Competence is integral in achievement of the vision - they are not separate issues. Interview great artists to find out what art means. Ask about the level of cultural sophistication in the mind of the perceiver of art - we get the art we deserve. Look at how harsh and stress inducing our environment has become, how ugly most of our architecture, how debased and twisted our tastes. For example Tracy Emmin is considered a great artist and I suppose she does represent the values of our time - God help us.
There is one thing I know, and that is that this music is really annoying. I was waiting for Indiana Jones to tell something about his art.

A "great artist" is relative. To become a "great artist" according to some of these blow hards is affirmation from them, from their endless, pretentious blather. It is THEIR attempt to stay relevant and part of the process. Great art does not need to be explained.

I believe an artist needs skill in how he enables the viewer to feel an emotional connection to the painting. without am artist there simply would not be much connection for the audience. the artist really tries to capture the imagination of peoples minds and create possibly strong metaphors.
You are absolutely correct and those in this video are on the other end on the spectrum.
No, the artist can only capture what is in their own mind. And the public either responds to it on some level or does not.

Why do you have to have the superman style music playing in the background? It tells me that what your presenters have to say is unimportant or "not enough." Please remove it - I enjoyed the discussion, but the choice of adding the music diminished the experience.

The lady says there is "managerial skill in the work of Damian Hurst, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons because they have to oversee a large studio" (of other artists doing work they sign as their own.) Does this strike anyone else as sick? And she goes on to say when in the Studio of Murikami that he "no longer paints the paintings but his eye is so good, he is the artist"... \sick, sick, sick...

I agree that contemporary art is incredibly imaginative these days, artists can explore so much more than just craft or skill. Technique gets boring esp if the same techniques are taught over and over. Artists can acquire and actually create their own skills from experience and intuition.

There is no other discipline where skill and craft has been more consistently undervalued than contemporary art. The worlds of music, writing and science celebrate technical proficiency. No one is saying that skill is the only element of great art but the more skill you have the greater the range of expression. Contemporary art is the technically maladroit celebrating the technically maladroit.

A book may have a great plot, but if the writer can't spell or create sentences, would you want to read it? Art is the same way. You don't need skill to create art, but why would anyone want to own the result. I prefer art that is both interesting and well crafted.

I've found that most people who think having skill- whatever that skill might be, is unnecessary for great art, are oftener critics , or people who went to art school, but skipped drawing class.
They also tend to have big, round glasses and wear big poofy scarves.
Not sure if those things are like a membership card or something.

What is considered great art ... (acceptable) for a long time ... at least since the sixties ... has been more about political ideologies and what was fashionable. The massive backlash against proper painting had been going on for a long time ... even when doing my MA earlier this year ... the lecturers always tried to pull us away from traditional painting. I decided I would rather be an honest painter ... than bow down to that 'painting is old fashioned' mindset. I am so glad I ignored them. I lost count of the amount of young students who got pushed toward stuff they didn't want to do ... and had no idea how to use oil paints when they really wanted to. It's a shame really ... skill shouldn't be thrown in the bin. I appreciate Modern art and the issues artists where investigating at the time ... but Modernism has been over and done with for decades ... Conceptual art proper was never that popular with gallery goers back in the sixties and seventies. At the end of the day ... it's the personal vision of the artist that is the important thing ... anyone can scribble or splash paint around ... but not everyone can paint and create art that is still good in what has long been considered a 'dead' medium. Figurative art and proper painting is actually making a slow steady come back - when done well it is timeless.

Why have the visual arts evolved to where the only accepted form is modern, contemporary conceptual art, while music seems divided into two general forms - classical and contemporary? Traditional 'salon' style paintings would seem to be the equivalent of classical music. While realistic painting is greatly restricted by what the camera can do, the camera has no imagination or ultimate control over what a greatly skilled artist can do manipulating realistic images.

Incorrect you need both vision and skill. One without the other will not elicit true admiration. One of the greatest sadness I have seen is the perpetuation of inaccurate thinking that this video represents.

Billie Holliday had only a scant 1 Octave range. Arguably the greatest singer ever. Julie Andrews had a 4 Octave range - and a lovely voice - but none of the artistry and brilliant vocal stylings that Billie had.

Gabriel Orozco (contemporary artist) says he likes to disappoint spectator with his art. That is one of his skills, right? And if you don't get it is because you are not smart enough. The biggest skill of all of this so called "contemporary" style is to kill intelligence and critique. Many of this contemporary artists are so insolent and they call it bravery. Bravery is to say: Enough of this bullshit! Laundring Money is the real issue behind all of this especulators of "contemporary art"!

To be a great artist today, one needs a gimmick. Bea Arthur topless was a good gimmick. The Virgin Mary in elephant dung, blasphemous, not my cup of tea, but it's a gimmick. Mapplethorpe's photo of the bullwhip was a gimmick.
My own gimmick is to pile up a few dozen of those bronze statues that are everyman and they're everywhere. You know, the cop writing the ticket, the man sitting on the park bench, the kid flying a kite, etc. I'd like to stack them higgily piggily, in a big pile, and I'll call that my art, my masterwork.. I'll go by the nom de guerre, Patrick of Atlantis.
I think you are correct that coming up with a gimmick - which would generally be accepted as a "radical" new style or innovation - is the objective of contemporary art. In fact, it IS the art: the art of coming up with a gimmick.

What a crock of swill. Many art commentators have careers primarily because their British accents sound knowledgable and sophisticated. Duchamp is hardly a great artist. Just because prices for a Duchamp are very high means nothing. Even his best paintings are not that good and do not hold up next to the work of actually great artists. The reason concept art now makes up such a large percentage of collected and promoted art is simply because the artists making this "art" know in their heart of hearts that they cannot draw, cannot paint, cannot sculpt, and essentially have no talent. Yet they want to be rich and famous anyway. So they invent ways to hide their lack of artistic ability. And the poor critics! Their job is just as bad. They still want careers, and there is so little good art to write about that they are reduced to talking about so-called concept art. And that means there is no end to the ridiculous blather that they can fill the magazines with.

You must be born with a above average MANUAL DEXTERITY. And a quick mind.
An artist's eye, you see paintings in your mind when you look around you.
Just do this, lift your hand to eye level and look at it.

And that is all there is.
If any of these are average, you might be a below average painter like picasso, and van Gogh.

I saw a watercolor artist just for fun, she had a cup for washing out her brushes and then she threw it at a canvas. Then she put more water in the cup with another color and threw that at the canvas, and then she did another one, and that's all there is to that.

Well, skill may or may not be central to great art, but one definitely needs great skill to be a great artist. Vision, originality, and depth are important features, no doubt - and skill is all about execution. Although these are distinct categories conceptually, in practice they're inextricably interwoven. So for example, one's originality may be compromised, or hampered, or limited, precisely because of inadequate skill. One may have the vision, but may be unable to execute. On the other hand, the ability to execute does not always entail vision or depth. The video's title is nonsense. Sorry. As for skill being "of the known", I don't see how that's necessarily or invariably true. Skill is purely about ability, cultivated or not. It needn't be conventional nor learned nor adhere to well established norms. Skill without precedent does not amount to the absence of skill. Skill can be so subtle that one doesn't even see it. That's called mastery - and by "mastery" I mean that which transcends the merely technical, true mastery harmoniously encompassing vision, depth, originality, and skill. While skill (or skills) typically begin within the context of the known, they are not lost (the great artist doesn't lose his skill) as he moves into the unknown.
Agree that one can be hampered in art by inadequate skill in a certain medium, but skill alone cannot make one a great artist. An artist may be a very skilled oil painter, for example, but then prove a huge disappointment as a sculptor, installation artist, photographer, etc. I've personally known several of these in my years as an art student and later as an artist. Meanwhile, some artists create impactful, commanding, deeply engaging work no matter the medium, while sometimes employing only quite rudimentary skill to do so. Art is inherently psychological, and, no matter how "skilled" they may be, the ugly, often painfully unavoidable truth is: Boring people invariably make boring art, and interesting people make interesting art.
