i disagree - she should be more professional and respect you when you're speaking. i end up look at her rather than paying attention what you have to say.
Question manny: at 5:15 when you were exposing for your BG, it look like you were holding your C3 button. What custom feature do you have for that button? Normally I have to go to live view display and turn it off but it look like you were just holding the button to do it. Thanks and yeah you did a great job bro!
looking good Manny. Can you share how you enabled live view on with custom button. As soon as i attach a flash/controller I loose live view . Many thanks,
Manny, I like your personality and style, but if you can take some constructive criticism purely geared towards helping you improve your approach I can help I believe. So you don't think I'm an idiot I've been a commercial photographer for over 40 years and a consultant on movies sets for 20 of those. When you light someone outdoors consider the primary light typically falling on someone is the sun from above which even at the golden hour only subtends a half a degree of arc, which implies there are going to be shadows, how a photographer handles them determines whether he is skilled. Do away with any reflector under a persons chin or neck, all the bs you see is idiots who don't have a clue about lighting. Key light your 2 ft softbox, 2 feet from her face give it enough tilt to throw the shadow, delineate the jawline. When you want to fill that shadow use a 4x8 foam core reflector behind you, feather the shadow to your desired effect based on the ambient light, you will know it when you see it, the rear hair light is fine as long as it's not overpowering. Also as a general rule when you are filling shadows don't use a reflector below your subject, instead have your assistant hold it a foot above your head and place the light where you want it. For true beauty shots, you want a soft transition shadow. I would encourage you to study cinema lighting and the way painters use light. there is a lot to learn hell I've been doing lighting for 45 years and I'm still learning, that's the beauty of our craft and you are a bright young guy with style. keep at it it gets better.
Well said. I've done this 30 years and what you said was good to hear. Not sure the instagram generation loves this stuff anymore but I enjoyed your post.
Manny at 5:10 what were you toggling? To get the ambient exposure and then being able to see the face properly again? Something to do with viewfinder exposure I'm guessing, mapped to the custom button.
Well for someone (myself) who will be doing headshots for an actress for the first time ever, I would say I think you did a fantastic job with the Dylan Patrick Cinematic Headshot Style. And I want to thank you for sharing your technique for lighting. It gave me some ideas to try out with my first headshot shoot. But what really impresses me when I watched Dylan Patrick on the F-Stoppers, he uses just a single speedlight. And it is attached to the camera’s hotshoe. Which is the worse place to have the light source, from what many other photographers say. I’m going to have to go back and watch those videos of his. He could be using the Nikon CLS (Creative Lightning System) with the speed light as the master and other speed lights or mono lights as slaves. But I’m sure all I saw was a single speed light on his camera. Thanks again Manny. 👍
Love seeing experienced photographers breaking "rules". 👶 gear used by a big time shooter is a great example of "learn the rules like a pro so you can break them as an artist."
Is there any way to get good compression for cinematic shots in a 85mm lens for headshots ?. 70-200mm above what I can afford. I'm currently saving but how can I get close to this?
MANNY! I need to know what you were doing with your C3 button! You were pushing it when you were talking about the ambient light? can you explain what you have that set up for? Please?
Awesome. What was the button you pushed to get the background exposure to show? Usually I have to turn off my flash for a second to see what my background exposure is going to be but you did it with c3
I love the comment, the background becomes texture, no going on about bokeh balls, instead its about beautiful mush, but to pull it off you do need the beautiful model, after all this is a head shot, and of course Kayla nailed it!
They turned out really nice, love the Magmod products. A beautiful model always adds a lot. Also, you need to come to Florida, you would do great in Miami with all the models there.
Great model. She's kinda Sassy and good energy. I'd of loved to see it with a 200mm prime at f1.2 to f1.8. Was really surprised the f2.8 did so well and it did great. Even though I think shooting at F1.2 is done to much now and a lil detail in the background looks good too. I love dropping the ambient to make her stand out. I think smaller modifier for the headshot forces you to aim and control more. It really worked well and you nailed it. Maybe a grid on the rear light to control more or a strip instead so more directional. All just suggestions to try. The pictures look awesome as is. Great job.
Manny this is GREAT! I have soo many questions though... At 5:15 what did you press to get the camera to show you background exposure without the flash. I shoot w a Sony a77ii and every time i put a flash or trigger on it the live view is pretty useless. Also you were shooting at 1/650th an 1/1000th... I didnt really think that the sync speed would go faster than 1/250th unless you were in high speed sync. Does the flash you were using automatically change to HSS if it detects a higher shutter speed? Thanks Mang!
Awesome manny, the only criticism I have is when you place her head at the edge of the frame, her face is pointed towards the edge. Instead, it may have been better if it was framed so that she was facing inward towards the negative space
Amazing job bro! Please make a video of night photography off camera flash!
Manny we're waiting 4 such episodes
Agreed
Right on Manny! Love the images you created.
You did great and gave me something to go out and try. She is Stunning and very easy to capture.
We just recently got the magmod octa 24 and ad200 pro too and we are loving it
Heck yeah! How's the MagBox working for you?
how do you program c3 so you can see your ambient
great work Manny
Fernando Lopez I was gonna ask the same thing! Manny what’s the trick?
Me too
I also want to know
He does. He talked about it in a camera setup video. I use it now too.
Set the custom key to Shot. Result Preview.
Kayla is such a nice girl and model. It looks like a lot of fun shooting with her. Keep it up Manny! Get well soon
You nailed it. Good job replicating dylan patrick’s headshot style
Superbeautiful and I think the smaller modifiers worked very well here.
Looks great to me man! 😉🍻 thanks for the shout out!
Appreciate it man
@@MannyOrtiz Dylan went easy on you. ;-)
I love the Dylan Patrick style of shooting. I try to use it as often as I can
Beautiful shots. Motivating me to go shoot more
She's my favorite model, hands down
i disagree - she should be more professional and respect you when you're speaking. i end up look at her rather than paying attention what you have to say.
when you pressed the c3 button to expose for the ambient, what setting is that.
@CallMeDames thank you so much!
What was it?
I curious as well?
it is maybe the live view off and on toggle
Nailed it and Kayla nailed the look. 5:26
Yes! love the MagGrips. They make everything easier.
Thanks Manny.
Thanks Jay!
Dude, you killed those photos. Absolutely beautiful light
The photos are fantastic. Great job Manny.
amazing work Manny!

Houston International Media probably eye auto focus
MisterDavidC ???...my eye auto focus doesn’t change the exposure of my shot and help me expose for the BG
MisterDavidC also too, eye auto focus is automatic when you half press the shutter
I have the same question. And, the images were fantastic Manny!
Steve K yeah a feature like that can really save us some time!
Great video! What function are you engaging when you press the C3 button at 5:10?
It's most likely to activate Eye AF
Nice work! Love your composition.
You nailed it Manny! Booyah! Outta the park! Great work.
Dope shots bro! I need to get the magmod softbox. I have the sphere already, but I love the light that you get from softboxes. Great video🔥
What are you waiting for Adrian?!
looking good Manny. Can you share how you enabled live view on with custom button. As soon as i attach a flash/controller I loose live view . Many thanks,
Fantastic shots!
You nailed it man!
as is done to see the liveview with the ambient light and the light with the flash when you press the c3 button thanks
I'm interested to know which is more useful/flattering for such kinds of portraits- the silver side of the reflector or the plain white side?
I always use the silver side. It reflects better.
great stuff Manny
Such a beautiful model face for this job! Amazing work manny! You never disappoint! Master of portraits!

Ohhhhhhhhh that was sick !!!!!!
That's an awesome first attempt Manny!
Wow! images look hot! Camera/lens combo is on the money! Very sharp with excellent bokeh.....well done.
You're awesome and I love her as your model!
Great job explaining. Continue success.
Manny at 5:10 what were you toggling? To get the ambient exposure and then being able to see the face properly again? Something to do with viewfinder exposure I'm guessing, mapped to the custom button.
Yes
Awesome Manny...Wicked shots and beautiful model too!!
Keep it up Manny! Love your work!

You killed it. And this video got me excited since I just ordered my second AD200 yesterday.

You're my hero man!!
Great video. How were you able to review the photos on the phone right on the spot? Is there an app for that? I'm using Nikon D850.
Abbafan SnapBridge for Nikon. Download the app and link to your d850
Is there any way to get good compression for cinematic shots in a 85mm lens for headshots ?. 70-200mm above what I can afford. I'm currently saving but how can I get close to this?
I love this style of images. I have a minolta 70-210 ( beercan).
I’ll go try this now. 🤙
2:58 That's beautiful!!!
Amazing photos. Great work.
I'm a NEW FAN📸 dope work
MANNY! I need to know what you were doing with your C3 button! You were pushing it when you were talking about the ambient light? can you explain what you have that set up for? Please?
You do flash portraits so effortlessly man. Awesome video as always.
Nailed it bro, great shooting
I am late on this but you nailed it...she is gorgeous!!
Gorgeous model! WOW!
AMAZING Shots. What is the black disconnected round corner box that fills the whole screen at 5:18? I'm not talking about the face detection box.
Great like every time 😌🙏🏻😎
Awesome. What was the button you pushed to get the background exposure to show? Usually I have to turn off my flash for a second to see what my background exposure is going to be but you did it with c3
What stand are you using for your set up? I’m trying to get into off camera flash and would love to know your setup for this!
So why the difference in camera are you back to Sony a7r3
NitaB Photography I literally grabbed the wrong camera
@@MannyOrtiz lol
Hi manny ! What’s your setting for the c3 button. It’s a cool thing to see actual exposure without flash. Thanks
So you use High Speed mode on your flashes. Isn't it bad for flash?
I love the comment, the background becomes texture, no going on about bokeh balls, instead its about beautiful mush, but to pull it off you do need the beautiful model, after all this is a head shot, and of course Kayla nailed it!
Been waiting to buy this course for a while! I've even bought a lens in anticipation. Nice to see the paces in action!

Thanks Dan! We love to MagMod at the hands of all of you amazing photographers!
Cool video! I always love seeing your work, you are very talented. This video helped me out a lot!
I think you nailed it bro. Great job. Made me wanna go out there and try the same!
Question? Would I be able to do this with what I already have? I have a Sony 30x camera
What screen protector are you using ?
Like it ! Perfect !
Love the dramatic shots! 🔥
You did a great job at it.
Great images. Had a fear of using soft boxes but this video made things seem alot more doable
Nailed it! Hard to take a bad pic of Kayla though!
What were your camera settings?
Did you switch back to the a7R3?
This is amazing. I'm gonna show my wife and we are gonna do this.
Do you have a tutorial on how to use those lights? How to set them up or how to use them overall???
I have many of them. Look back at my older videos
Nice cinematic headshot style..😎👍👍
Did you come back to the A7Riii?
What setting on the Sony to expose for the ambient lighting?
What do you mean?
You pressed the C3 button and noted exposing for ambient lighting. What do you have that button programmed to?
Great video 👍
Are those Flashpoint/Godox flashes bright enough for most outside shooting? Sure are convenient!
Yes! If it’s really bright out, you might have to get them closer to the model
Ok cool. Been eye-balling them. Appreciate the response. As usual, your model and pics are fire!
"What, what happen?" 4:36 lolololol
Well Done!
Dude what did you apply to C3 button? Just awsome 👌🏻👌🏻
Yes, I would like to know that too
Me too (:
Manny, can similar result be done with 135 mm? What do you think?
Great model. She's kinda Sassy and good energy. I'd of loved to see it with a 200mm prime at f1.2 to f1.8. Was really surprised the f2.8 did so well and it did great. Even though I think shooting at F1.2 is done to much now and a lil detail in the background looks good too.

It's hilarious every time Kayla is in a video. Also Manny, good attempt on the headshots. Good stuff
Dope video and funny, keep pushing manny, and I hope you doing well I saw the ig post
I am. Thanks so much
