- All class - Presenting Percy is much the best in the 2018 RSA Chase, winning at the Cheltenham Festival for the second successive year for trainer Pat Kelly, jockey Davy Russell and owner Philip Reynolds.
Presenting Percy won the Pertemps Final 12 months ago and further Cheltenham Festival success didn't look in too much doubt here from a long way out, as Russell - always excellent at Cheltenham - bided his time in an ice-cool ride before sending Presenting Percy for home at the top of the straight to land the Group One prize for staying novice chasers by a yawning seven lengths.
"By God, he's some horse," said Russell. "Sometimes you're a fool and sometimes you're a hero, but it all worked out today. I've nothing but praise for the man (Kelly), he's a genius."
This success proved to be the highlight of Presenting Percy's career, which sadly didn't progress in the manner expected after several extended injury absences. Seen as a future Cheltenham Gold Cup contender, he started favourite for the race the following year after a heavily-interrupted preparation but finished down the field.
Presenting Percy won two of his nine subsequent starts before his sad passing in April 2021 at the age of 10 following complications with a leg injury. He was a hugely popular horse, notably getting clapped out of the parade ring at Gowran Park before his second Galmoy Hurdle success - his first start since this RSA victory but nearly a year later.

Similar thoughts were echoed by delighted owner Philip Reynolds, who said: "The man (Kelly) is an absolute genius the way he trains horses. I can't believe it myself. It was so stressful watching it. It's more relief than anything else. I love this horse."
Reynolds went on: "I'm speechless. I'm just delighted he's shown what he can do - I knew he was a Graded horse. It was the hardest four or five minutes I've ever put in. It's been incredible. I think Pat deserves all the credit for the route he has taken with the horse. He got a bit of a slagging about the route he had taken, but he's taken him out of novice company twice and I think it's toughened him up.
"The man is an absolute genius. How he hasn't got a yard full of horses is beyond me. To have a horse good enough to come to Cheltenham is incredible, but to have a horse to run the way he's done is unbelievable."
Asked whether he felt Presenting Percy could develop into a Gold Cup contender, he said: "I'm just delighted to win the RSA. Today is just amazing."
Henry de Bromhead said of Monalee: "He ran a blinder and I'm delighted with the run but I am disappointed not to win but such is life. He is galloping all the way to the line he is definetly a three mile horse. They are two very good novices and he was just beaten by a better one on the day. I hope so in time that he could be a Gold Cup horse but that is a long way away but it is the kind of direction we would be hoping to go. He handles most ground but possibly better ground might suit. Hopefully we will see him at Punchestown."
Colin Tizzard said of Elegant Escape: "He is a good strong stayer. Just when they crowded round him a bit they had a bit too much pace for him. He was staying on strong from the last and he will make a lovely Ladbrokes Trophy and Welsh National horse." - Спорт

Best horse in 2019 GC but just a little doubt as to the trip will he get the trip in a true run GC native river will make it a stern test n wont be stopping up the hill but presenting percy will be carrying my wedge just hope he stays.

I've just re-viewed this race again 25/1/2019, and I'm thinking if Presenting Percy uses these waiting tactics in the 2019 Gold Cup, and Native River runs the same way this year as last year, when he and Might Bite never saw another rival, he'll lose. I don't think Presenting Percy will catch him. I remember Don Poli being talked up the same way before his Gold Cup after his RSA victory,. He was also waited with in the Gold Cup, but by the time he got into the race Don Cossack and Djakadam were gone beyond recall.

@@bigshug8576 Right, agreed but he was hyped up following his RSA win, and in all honesty the RSA field that year was very poor, Presenting Percy on the other hand beat a very useful bunch in his RSA win. I just think he'll have to lay up a lot closer to Native River than he did to his rivals in the RSA. Another interesting entry for the Gold Cup is Frodon who has just moved into the top 8 chaser ratings, but hasn't been tested at 3 miles yet. he's been carrying big weights and always lays up with the pace.
David Kent now frodon has proved himself at 3m1f so I think 20/1 each way great bet, also elegant escape who was powering home after looking well beat must have a chance

Different beasts. Don Poli was being scrubbed in snatches from half way in his RSA, which was a very weak renewal. This is already proven to be a much stronger renewal. Percy also cruised into this race much more smoothly and won snugly, he has a lot more pace. Don Cossack was also a better horse than Native River, who was flattered somewhat I imagine thanks to the awful ground last year. It might be similar going this year, but Percy is a more capable horse of dealing with those conditions than Might Bite was. Percy has the picture perfect profile of a Gold Cup winner. As history has shown many times before, he will be held up, will come off the bridle at the top of the hill and will have them picked off around the last, before asserting up the hill.
Drop Al Boum back to 2m4f and he will be an absolute beast, should be a JLT winner, next years Ryanair winner of given the chance. Davy followed him all the way because he knew he would get a good toe into in to a perfect point! Please don’t run him over 3m NTO!

Could he cause a upset this year in the Gold cup ! He pulled up lame after the 2019 gold cup , hasn't been electric this season , but you cant completely rule him out , as he has festival form which counts for a lot

Other than winning the main novice chase at the festival, absolutely annihilating monalee, al boum photo and elegant escape. 3 horses that have all massively franked the form in open company this season. Can understand backing something else but to say this horse hasn't shown you anything to say it could win a gold cup is just blatantly incorrect.
That 2nd Last fence on the Old Course that was repositioned a few years ago needs to be removed, as horses often don`t meet it on a good stride as it is so close to the home turn. Simply compare the number of fallers at this obstacle with the 2nd Last on the New Course which is much further away from the home turn. Surely the officials at Cheltenham Racecourse are observing this, and need to act. Regarding Presenting Percy i actually thought they would consider supplementing for this Year`s Gold Cup, as on that Ground he would have a Great Chance. Hope he stays sound. Coneygree`s connections must be really glad that they went for the Gold Cup as a Novice as it looks like being his only ever attempt at the race in his Career.

I think this will turn out to be an above average RSA. Percy the most likely gold cup winner, and Monalee the most likely Ryanair winner this season.
I can tell you now that its quite the opposite.
Monalee has had two races since this... a Grade 2 win and a Grade 1 second. Percy has had one race since, a Grade 2 win... Al Boum Photo won a Grade 1. Elegant Escape won a Grade 3. Black Corton second in a Grade 2. Ballyoptic came second in a Grade 3.
What more could you want 😂😂
If I was Monalee the last thing I would want to see is Road to Respect, Coney Island or the Storyteller. I don't think he should even run in it, he would be better suited to the Gold Cup. In saying that, if the going was to be Heavy, then I would fancy him.
..that is assuming WM doesn't enter Footpad or Min either. UDS should stick to the Qm and I think he will and will beat Altior.

I think we are talking place prospects, with a view to the National . Would be happy if he does win Gold Cup He has already gone 4 miles.. if it comes up soft, his chances are better .
@@annkenrick8909 Pace of the race is key for me. The stop start pace never suited EE at all. Gold cup will be ran at full pelt as the welsh national.was. This suits him. If he can get into a good jumping rhythm he will go close

this is one of th worst RSA's of all time. I like Presenting Percy but if he finishes within touching distance of the front 3 in the Gold Cup id be surprised. I could be wrong but I very much doubt it.
Really LoL. Dounikos, Monalee, Elegant Escape and Al Boum Photo have all won big races since.
I actually think this is a particularly strong RSA 😂 pretty confident Monalee will win the Ryanair too
