Thanks a bunch, yes I got pain in my wrist, I'm a piano player learning violin, so I had a feeling I was straining/causing tension, just had to check. I find it really hard to keep my arm in alligment, but I will keep trying. 🙏

So glad I found this! I'm 30 and I've been playing fiddle on and off for about 10 years.
Especially when I come back on its sort of unbearable at first. Right where you pointed to exactly is the pain.
This is my first day back in awhile. There's a slide down I'm trying to do right now on the G string and it's killing me. Good to know it's not because of bad form

Really helpful video. I'm currently learning violin and I knew something was off. I was bending my wrist to reach the distant notes which was causing a momentary pain whenever I was placing my wrist straight again. Played like only a week like that. Glad I saw your video early enough to not cause a long term injury on my wrist. Thank you very much.

Thank you for this video. I was hurting in the exact same area you showed in the video and I thought it was my posture or my shoulder rest that was the problem despite my teacher saying my posture was correct. Looks like I just have to build up those muscles. :)

Totally, it will hurt at first but eventually you wont feel it. It's very helpful to do some upper body, arm and hand stretches to prevent any pain in the shoulders, wrists, hands, etc to support the development of your newfound violin muscles!

Dear David.Alix, may I recomend to you the Libero shoulder rest? I am an old school violin student who gave up violin 40 years ago.approx 10 years ago I rekindled my interest in the violin while staying at a mission. There was a book there very large and thick lavender in color called The Violin. Another resident there had the book at his bedside.Upon seeing this book I became curious and hungry to take up where I left off after having been told I needed pursue the violin because My reflexes were too slow.In any case probably your. Bursa muscle in your left violin holding hand and arm may be activated and sore. Your using muscles you may nor have been using ever before. There are chords which will entangle your left fingers and cause similar strain so don't be discouraged. My instrument has allways been the violin but I also played piano by ear. I never had any formal training on the piano but pretended to play a kawaii baby grand in the green room of a local community College. I DERRIVED SUCH GREAT PLEASURE FROM MY EXPERIMENTAL PLAYING THAT I STILL HAVE A GREAT LOVE FOR THE INSTRUMENT. I WOULDNT WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT MINOR SORENESS OF THE LEFT WRIST AND LEFT SHOULDER AND FOREARM UNLESS IT BECOMES UNBEARIBLE. THEN I WOULD SEE A PHYSICIAN OR PHYSICAL THERAPIST. I WOULD AVOID CHIROPRACTORS AT ALL COST. EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT HAVE SEVERE PAIN IN MY LEFT ARM AS I TOOK VIOLIN IN FOURTH GRADE MAY I RECOMEND A BOTTLED REMEDY CALLED SLOANS LINIMENT. I UNDERSTAND IT MAY BE.AVAILABLE AT TACK SHOPS OR CO OPS FOR HORSE CARE. IT COMES IN A BOTTLE SIMILAR TO OLD SHOE WHITING OR POLISH. IT IS A FLASK SHAPED BOTTLE WITH BLACK AND WHITE LABLE WITH A MOUSTACHE CLAD DR. SLOAN ON THE LABLE. THE REMEDY IS TOPICAL HAS A PLEASANT ODOR AND WHEN SPREAD OVER THE AFFLICTED MUSCLE SOOTHES AND WARMS AND COMFORTS THE MUSCLE. IT IS APPLYED BY A COTTON OR WOOL DAUBER BALL AT THE END OF A WIRE ROD ATTACHED TO THE METAL CAP. ITS BASIC INGRIEDIENT IS TURPENTINE KEROSENE AND IT RELIEVES MINOR SPRAINS OF BOTH HORSE AND HUMAN. I WOULD THINK THIS LINAMENT WOULD ASSUAGE YOUR GRIEF AND NURSE YOUR LEFT VIOLIN SUPPORTING ARM WITH GREAT FACILITY. OR YOU COULD TRY A HOT WATER BOTTLE 20 MIN ON 20 MIN. OFF. I HOPE YOU WONT GIVE UP ON THE VIOLIN AS I DID 40 YEARS AGO. I COULD NOT TUNE MY INSTRUMENT TO MY SATISFACTION SO DECIDED TO GIVE UP. IT WAS AMONG MY WORST DECISIONS I EVER MADE. THE VIOLIN WILL FRUSTRATE YOU AND PEOPLE MAY TRY TO CAUSE YOU TO CEASE PLAYING BUT IF YOU WILL PERSEVERE YOU MAY FIND THAT THE INSTRUMENT HAS A SOUL IF YOU WILL OR SIMILAR TOO A REAL PERSON WHO WHEN PROPERLY FINESSED WILL ACTUALLY SING FOR YOU. THEY ARE NOT UNLIKE A PET. HAVE YOUR NEAREST LUTHIER CARVE A DEPENDABLE BRIDGE FOR YOUR INSTRUMENT AND OBTAIN A SET OF ORIGINAL EVA PIRAZZI VIOLIN STRINGS AND HOPEFULLY YOU WILL BE PLAYING YOUR VIOLIN IN VERY LITTLE TIME. BYE FOR NOW.

They are right , hope you feel better soon. If could be nerves if it's the whole way from neck to thumb. I have this in my right arm more or less chronically as I ignored the pain when it first started. Look at nerve stretches for left arm.

Playing for a long time in public. I noticed the left side of my body arm elbow fingers especially sore tired and numb.
Is it a sign that my shoulder rest is too low or too high?
Professionals can play concertos for hours without pain.
Do you favor a specific shoulder rest or sponge?

Hi I know that this video is about 3 years old but I did want to ask you. I'm experiencing pain closer to my wrist and like the muscles there is that also normal? I feel like it is slowly stretching those ligaments and muscles as needed. Granted I took violin back in middle school and have picked it up off and on just to play around with it. I'm personally picking it backup for my own personal growth and enjoyment. I don't really care for playing in a band or anything unless that opportunity comes to me. But I do at least want to make my playing experience more comfortable and more enjoyable and advantageous to my growth.

Hmm without seeing the specific spot I couldn't comment so you'd be best off seeing a teacher to ask that. Good luck!

Again try Sloans Linment or hot water bottle. CHAMOMILE TEA MAY ALSO HELP. ASPIRIN IF REALLY PAINFUL SEE YOUR DR. AND OR VIOLIN TEACHER. YES I REMEMBER HOW SORE MY LEFT HAND WAS AND I WAS BEING GUIDED BY A VIOLA TEACHER. SO I WOULD SAY ITS PROBABLY NORMAL BUT IF IT CONTINUES BETTER HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. I WOULDNT START OUT WITH PLAYING ANY MORE THAN 5 TO 15 MINUTES PER DAY. THEN IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT GET A VIOLIN TEACHER OR VIOLA TEACHER . HAVE FUN!
