I found it! By accident! I vaguely remembered hearing something this beautiful before, but it was hard to track down because Sufjan has so many beautiful songs. What a lovely song.
Does the border temple fall down I fall down When the approaching light in me has stayed It takes me back Do you float the sanctuary And bury What a messenger can trade in trades in Takes me back against the everglades Back against the out-of-state This is the last place I go for now It takes me back (back against the everglades) It takes me back (back against the out-of-state) This is the last place I go to It takes me back (back against the everglades) It takes me back (back against the out-of-state) This is the last thing I say Does it matter that I fall down My wall down When the border is inside or remained Brings me back Do you know the adversary And carry All the burdens of peoples' pasts Takes me back against the everglades Back against the out-of-state This is the last place I go for now It takes me back (back against the everglades) It takes me back (back against the out-of-state) This is the last place I go It takes me back (back against the everglades) It takes me back (back against the out-of-state) This is the last thing I say It takes me back (back against the everglades) It takes me back (back against the out-of-state) This is the last thing I say The road can be stronger The road can lay longer The road can . . . The road can lay longer The road can be stronger The road can . . . The road can lay longer The road can be stronger
I listened to this song a lot when my grandmother passed away and now it always takes me back to that time, theres something bittersweet about it but its so comforting. Brings back memories of her and simpler times before I had to grow up
reminds me of a holiday in the meditteranean I had, I was about to move from home to university back in England, and I kept playing this song on repeat the whole week, like an ode to the challenging future. or something.

Can we just appreciate the fact that this masterpiece has been on UA-cam for 14 years and here we are still enjoying it now
16* years
I was 16 when I first heard this song, and I was in love with it. Now I’m 30, and I’m still as big a Sufjan fan as I was as a kid.
where'd you hear it? im curious ive only heard it here
@@Pixelkip maybe here, this video is 15 years old now after all.
Heard sufjan when I was 15 and didn't think I'd make it to 20 but now I'm close to turning 21 :)
@@realleon2328 same turning 21 next month
@@aidajuma8852 just turned 21 too
God I love this song. Same as everyone here - first time like 15 years ago and it’s emotional to come back to it every few years
Some songs have inside meanings to the writer and aren't meant to be deciphered just enjoyed.
Just be thankful he put such beauty on earth.
This song came from a compiliation album called 'Seen/Unseen'
The actual album is out of print, but I'm sure you could find it somewhere online.
I found it! By accident! I vaguely remembered hearing something this beautiful before, but it was hard to track down because Sufjan has so many beautiful songs. What a lovely song.
OK, this is ANOTHER gem that he hasn't released. His productivity is amazing which is great because his music is fantastic.
Does the border temple fall down
I fall down
When the approaching light in me has stayed
It takes me back
Do you float the sanctuary
And bury
What a messenger can trade in trades in
Takes me back against the everglades
Back against the out-of-state
This is the last place I go for now
It takes me back (back against the everglades)
It takes me back (back against the out-of-state)
This is the last place I go to
It takes me back (back against the everglades)
It takes me back (back against the out-of-state)
This is the last thing I say
Does it matter that I fall down
My wall down
When the border is inside or remained
Brings me back
Do you know the adversary
And carry
All the burdens of peoples' pasts
Takes me back against the everglades
Back against the out-of-state
This is the last place I go for now
It takes me back (back against the everglades)
It takes me back (back against the out-of-state)
This is the last place I go
It takes me back (back against the everglades)
It takes me back (back against the out-of-state)
This is the last thing I say
It takes me back (back against the everglades)

Sufjan is so great, that brilliant tracks like this are left off his full length albums. That is the true depth of his works.
This song just gets me in my feelings.
OSCAR NOMINATED SUFJAN STEVENS

The most beautiful song about Paul's conversion on the road from Damascus.
I love this song. Reminds me of old Smashing Pumpkins from the Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness album.
I REALLY want this on vinyl!
this is such a good song!! it's hauntingly beautiful, you can feel the words echoe inside you!!
Such a lovely song, I'm really glad this was posted as I was looking for it a while back :D
Thanks!
I’m almost as old as this comment wow
If he ever stopped making music, I would completely understand; he's already given the world music that it will never forget.
12 years later and he's still going
Takes me back to 2004.
It does not matter what gender he is attracted to; a person is a person, and beautiful music is beautiful music. That's it.
i remember listening to this when it sank in that we were losing our house in high school. i love this song
why's this song so unknown
it's so freakin gooood I can't believe it
Agreed. I miss Elliott but it is nice to have another option with a highly talented young artist.
One of my favorites.
this song really reminds me of when i lived in Brooklyn, and i would walk from the train station to my house.
takes me back to the year i spend in damascus...
Mounir Zahran Syrian? and you have good taste in music?
wow......and wow again...awesome.
The latter part of this song kind of sounds like and reminds me of Street Spirits by Radiohead; regardless, great song by Sufjan.
0 dislikes. And that is the way it shall stay, forever.
where can i get a legal mp3 of this? i wish he would release an album or rare songs while we wait for the next album...whenever that is :(
Damascus is really great!
ElDudeBrother, first of all thank you so very much for uploading these rare Sufjan tracks.
Is there anywhere I can download this one and "Borderline"?
sufjan
floats on the riddim
which comes from
the source
an instrument
for music
which opens the heart
and let flow divine tears...
FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG
Heh...he looks so unhappy to be wearing that costume for this photo. ;)
@petehatch
sorry, theres a chorus in there too:
dm am em G
This video is 16 days older than me
@Maadspaceape check out the Sufjan Stevens song "Kill", it is A LOT like "Roman Candle" by Elliott Smith.
good song.
@David1sBored maybez it was an accident when he was trying to press 'like'
what kind of keyboard voice do you think it's used in the song? i love the way it sounds at 2:49

he is the least festive gay man ever but a helluva of musician.
anyone know where i can find this song?
Stacy Reed
Go to vidtomp3.com and get it on itunes that way
can you send this to me? i would love you for it.
Is this from any album? I'd like to be able to find some album art work for this and label it properly in itunes; thanks!
Is it me or sounds the intro alot like Wish You Were Here from Pink Floyd?
Anyone wanna send me the song? Let me know!! Much appreciated :)
just you
i think he looks like paul rudd in dat photo.
:)
Still love it :)
+Amy Now did i ask u
+Cole Horvitz who are you really mad at?
+Amy Now u
Cole Horvitz hahaa funny
He is not gay. But if he was there would be nothing wrong with that :) I
tripe
no, that would be "Damasuk"
is he a gay ??,, :s
Probably.
Most probable is straight, but keepin his gender lowkey so he is more attractive to thr audience just like frank and tyler
@Myithis Or maybe it's awkward to know that gay people can love Jesus as well...
Not claiming Sufjan is, I have no idea. Just saying,.
It would be pretty awkward if he was gay. As this song is about Paul and Jesus... He also has countless christian folk songs.
Oh, he's gay, and it's not like he's trying to hide it. Predatory Wasp of the Pallisades?
Gay Christians abound. Homophobic Christians abound. Which are you?
