Agree. Dogs, any case involving a dog will break my heart. Even losing a pet affects me 1000 times harder than losing a human friend or family. The unconditional love, loyalty and devotion one gets from a dog is so precious. The whole story is so tragic. That poor family. 50+ years of wondering what happened to their boy. :(

The fact that both dogs were never seen again and he was also never found makes me think he and his dogs fell into something. An old well, mineshaft or body of water. Something happened quickly and they disappeared. Dogs tend to return and or stay right in the area their master was last seen by them. I train K-9’s and supervised the K-9 Until for several decades. Dogs have certain instinctive mental patterns and behaviors. Something accidental and fast would explain why the dogs were also missing and never seen in the area again.
    Just a thought.

A slight update. Reed is my Grandfather's brother. Back in 2010 I heard about why the case was reopened. I don't think police said why because of fear of evidence damage. Back then I was told that the neighbors in one of the nearby properties (keep in mind that I was a kid, and it's been over a decade since I heard this) had decided to dig some trenches. I think it was for airsoft, but honestly that could be wrong. When digging they found the bones of two dogs, same type as Reed's... Stuffed in an old trash bag. I heard from other family members that one of the neighbors was a very creepy man and ran a medical practice. Apparently when the man sold his house, the basement contained surgical tools and even a surgery table.
Take everything I say with a grain of salt. I was a little kid when I heard this all from my grandparents back then. My personal opinion is that he was kidnapped by someone in the neighborhood and killed. They found his dogs. I'm willing to bet he's been buried out there. Someone's brand new house or gazebo just barely covering the bones.

I hate when idiots automatically assume someone is lying when they say they knew, or were a relative of a victim or murderer. Its so rude. NEWSFLASH. These people had lives, acquaintances, close friends and family members close to them or not, even years later. I always give the benefit of the doubt, as I cannot prove otherwise. Sure, some people lie to get attention, but this does not feel made up to me, and they themselves said "take what i say with a grain of salt" so as not to mislead anyone. If it were my family member or someone I knew, I too would be watching documentaries to find out more. It's not that far of a stretch, and not unheard of either.

I have a younger brother and we were super close as kids, not so much as adults, but I can't even imagine how I'd feel if he just disappeared one day with our dogs and never came back. the not knowing is the worst. Wow.. I’ve never had a case so close to home! This happened literally down the street from me! A stone’s throw away.. and I’ve never heard of it until today. Thank you for shedding light on his case. There’s a fairly large river that runs down Emigration canyon and runs right down where he would have been walking right along side it the entire way- it crosses over Wasatch Blvd and continues East. And one thing about these rivers that come down through these mountains, they are really fast moving and would’ve been *a lot* healthier rivers back in the 60’s, considering our snow pack and temperatures were much colder then.
I wonder if he got into some sort of accident- maybe the puppy ran off and fell into the river and he and the older dog jumped in after it, and they were swept away. Or the dogs were playing in the river and they got swept away and he went after them?? But then you’d think that they’d turn up at some point too. I had a friend that drowned when they were tubing in the Provo river that’s in the next mountain range over.. and it’s an almost identical river- similar size etc., so they can be really dangerous. That’s what came to my mind right away- because it would be pretty hard to abduct a teenager with 2 dogs in broad daylight. But who knows what people are capable of if they’re intent on doing something.. What a tragic case. Even after all these years, his siblings haven’t given up searching for him… breaks my heart.💔 As always, wonderful work..✨

I believe it as well because it wouldn’t make sense for him to run away, so I agree that something accidental may have happened but I think that a kidnapping would have been more likely to happen. There are no large bodies of water , no rivers (small creeks if anything), and definitely no mine shafts near his home. I may become unpopular for this, but I really do have to support the "accident" theory. He had no enemies, there was no motive to rob or abduct him, and a man with two dogs is a lousy target. By contrast, that notion of getting killed/lost while reducing someone else, often in a chain, has come up in disappearance cases before, like the Ghost Blimp of WWII or the Flannan Isles case.

It seems improbable that at 15 years old, he could just make himself disappear for more than a year or so. Plus to do this he probably would have taken more belongings with him (at least all of his money). For me that leaves an accident, or foul play being the strongest possibilities. But then, what kind of accident would eave no trace of him, or the dogs (even after 40+ yrs)?
Maybe he was injured, and released the dogs in hope they'd bring back help.
I think he likely met with foul play. Because he was wearing braces, I hope someone thought to go searching for his body using a metal detector.

Poor Reed. I lean towards the theory that he was taken against his will. Although we can never know what's truly going on in someone's mind, it doesn't seem as if Reed was the type to run away. How awful for his family, having to live their lives without ever knowing what happened to him.

He was training the dogs for hunting so my theory is he came across someone who saw value in those dogs either to sell or for his personal hunting use. @@Jay-ov4gl I never thought about the dogs being trained for hunting. Maybe someone wanted the dogs for themselves, as you said. But to actually kill Reed in order for that to happen seems extreme. If that's what happened I wonder why they didn't just take them by force, but not hurt Reed? 🤔 These unsolved disappearances are so sad.

The fact both dogs were never found honestly makes me think the dogs were the target, not the boy. Dog theft is really common where I'm from and pretty lucrative for certain breeds especially if they are trained (such as for hunting). If someone passing through saw 2 valuable dogs and only a kid to defend them, my first thought is they just grabbed him and both dogs. Whether they just got rid of him somewhere out of sight, or kept him around (maybe to keep the dogs easier to manage) and dumped him later out of area who knows. But I thought it was weird this didn't come up as a theory, since if you just look at the dogs as a valuable item, they were an easy target. Maybe even arranged by someone who knew or had seem them before since it mentions he always took the dogs out and trained them a lot. Just a theory but odd it wasn't considered by police.

Honestly, he and the dogs probably fell into a cave. The cave density in SLC is moderate, also the map of the area suggests his route was most immersed with forest. Also not all caves look like caves. Some look like holes--the dogs could have ran into one chasing an animal or sound and fell in, along with the boy.

First, I appreciate and like your channel very much. I realize this video was posted a year ago, however, I just want to correct some misinformation. Hope you don’t mind. I’ve been researching Reed’s disappearance for some time now. Many old newspaper articles state that Reed told his sister he was taking his dogs for a walk. That misinformation is repeated over and over again. In fact, Reed did not tell his sister Suzanne he was taking his dogs for a walk. She clearly states on numerous news interviews with reporters that Reed simply stated he was going out to feed his two dogs. She told him to be back inside in 30 minutes for dinner. He replied that he definitely would be, and he walked out the kitchen door with the two cans of dog food. The time was 12:45pm as verified by police detective Cody Lougy of the SLC Police and Suzanne Jeppson Tate. For Reed to be on time for dinner he would need to be at the dinner table by 1:15pm. Even if one considers the possibility that Reed did take the dogs for a walk and was seen out by St Mary of the Wasatch school, there is no way he could have made it home by 1:15pm, and especially not with two dogs. He would have known this. The family had an evening church service at 4:00pm and Reed would never have challenged the family’s structured schedule on Sundays which was church in the morning, day and evening. Also the statement from the individual who reported they saw whom they thought to be Reed with his two dogs at 1:00pm, was actually never able to be confirmed. No one could back up or substantiate this claim since nobody else was with this person or saw the person. I just wanted to update because of the misinformation out there. My personal opinion is that this is one of the numerous reasons this case has never been solved. Again, you have a great channel!

seems like something would have to happen to the two dogs before anything happened to reed. whatever their fate was, it happened to all three simultaneously. I'm guessing the adult dog had something happen to it, reed went to save it, protect it, etcetera and met a terrible fate such as getting lost, drowning, falling hard in the utah environment and the puppy was left all on its own, not being able to take care of itself

The most disturbing thing other than the young lad vanishing, is the fact that BOTH dogs were never seen again. What stopped either of them from returning home?? Could Reed have been attacked and the poor dogs killed whilst trying to protect him?? Dogs run fast and usually can find their home again, someone would've had to catch them both. Finding out what happened to the unfortunate dogs would surely lead to what ever happened to Reed.🤷

Sounds like Reed might've met someone who seemed friendly & wanted to chat. They spoke awhile & when Reed realized he was late for dinner, this person offered him & his dogs a ride home. Only he took Reed & the pups elsewhere, sadly. Even worse, it may have been someone Reed trusted. Being a child/teen in a large family can be tough, because attention is usually spread pretty thinly. So some kids are drawn to or seek parental substitutes. And this is exactly what predators watch for in their victims.)

My hypothesis, as an Ex-Catholic gay who's had arguably too many ex-Mormon gay exes?
Reed was at about the age when most teens, specifically those who end up LGBTQ, are questioning their sexuality. This was not only the 1950s, but he was Mormon.
The Mormon family is relevant for a number of reasons, but especially the fact that the insistence that Reed was "normal," whereas most parents at that time would have said their missing teen boy was "average," suggests that they may have had some suspicions of their own about Reed's sexuality, but were intent on putting it out of sight and it is mind. Even Mormon teens in the 1950s dated, but there's no mention of him having had a girlfriend, steady or otherwise -just that he was "popular" and had plenty of friends. Plus, Mormons have a very cultish way of interacting with those who are "outsiders" from the LDS Church, and knowing that SLC has people living there besides Mormons, they absolutely would not have said anything about any family issues to the press, and probably not even to cops who they didn't personally recognise from church (and even then, said hypothetical cops would have probably kept it out of the records).
After church, it's typical for many kids of other Xian denominations to go out and do whatever, but Mormons generally prefer to stay with the family, the rest of the day. The fact that it was part of Reed's routine to not just feed the dogs, after changing out of his church garb, but to _specifically go out walking the dogs, by himself, in the woods behind the house_ suggests a teen who wants to recover from church in literally the only way he knows how to, and with the only members of the family who won't judge him.
I don't think that he had himself a game of Bottom of the River and Never Come Back, cos even as a football player, after looking up the dog breed, and knowing one was an adult dog trained at birding, it's unlikely for him to successfully have taken both dogs with him, and the adult dog would have found its way back home. Plus, as pointed out, the presence of the dogs would have intimidated a potential abductor.
Whether or not Reed is still alive is anyone's guess, but my guess is that Reed was figuring out that he was probably gay, and just quietly left home to make a new life for himself. He had contacts in Montana, and he was fairly "outdoorsy," so it's possible that when he found his way out of SLC, he took to hitching to Montana, perhaps having made contact with any friend(s) Reed had confided in about his questioning sexuality, so that he could safely start the process of starting over.

Mormons tend not to date until age 16, and Reed was 15, so the lack of girlfriend isn't especially strange. Going out with the dogs isn't that odd either, you don't generally socialize outside of the family on Sundays but being in nature/solo contemplation is v normal/encouraged. And I think that if he were questioning his sexuality it's very likely someone would know. Growing up in the 50s, in that part of SLC, I'd expect him to have confided in a parent and/or his bishop (which didn't really become less common until the AIDS crisis and increased activism started to pretty publicly reveal how much the official advice to marry a woman and hope for the best but otherwise you're on your own, wasn't working), and even if they kept that secret at the time, I'd expect it to have come up in the decades since as stigma's decreased and he's remained missing. It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing that any of the adults in his life would have taken deliberately to the grave, and with his siblings still looking for him, if they thought that were a possibility I think they'd have brought it up by now.
