  • January 1987 was a winter month that was made famous for it's extreme cold wave. It is believed to be the coldest spell of weather of the 20th century, and for some, the coldest since the mid-1700s! Find out what caused it in this historic video.

We had a permanent snow dangler through the forth/clyde valley during that spell (the easterly stretch from denmark to the firth of forth is the longest sea track over the north sea). This produces a fantastic lake effect snowfall when circumstances are perfect. My home town of Motherwell had over 1 meter of snow lying, and was completely cut off for several days. Shops completely ran out of fresh food supplies. It was the deepest snowfall I've ever seen here... I've been recording the weather here since the early 1980's.

I was fortunate or most would say unfortunate enough to have been right in the sweet for this. This was an event I will never forget. Not forgetting back then, you weren’t quite as aware of the current weather patterns as we are now.
I was taking horse riding lessons in leysdown on the isle of Sheppy on Sunday the 11th jan. The skies turned very dark around 2/3pm, then all hell was let loose.
Over the next 24hrs it dumped 3ft of snow not including drifts.
But probably the most memorable feature of this was that patchy snow was still in the hedgerows in early April.

Hi Scott Mick is my name and boy the Severe cold spell of january 87 is one I will never forget. I'm from Ireland and well over a foot of snow fell in many parts in the east and midland regions of Ireland. I remember thick ice had formed on the windows of my dad's house. Keep up the good work.

I was 10 during this. The field at the back of the house, it was upto our waists. We had to tunnel through a glacier half a mile thick to get to the school entrance, which wouldn't dream of closing, and get caned into an early grave if we were so much as 2 minutes late!

My family and I were living in East Kent at that time in the village of Shepherdswell, not far from Dover. We were well and truly snowed in!

I remember this winter I would have been 9 years old. There were snow drifts up to the roof of our barn.

Caldecott is in Rutland, not Leicestershire, except in terms of the police department which is Leicestershire Police. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caldecott,_Rutland

Hi - the Kent town you show is Sheerness (on the Isle of Sheppey). The road sign also looks like Sheppey (the one to the left I think says Leysdown). This sign would have been near the road which leaves the island. Great video.

Lived in a flat above a shop. The toilet was near the front door with 3 outside walls. Well it froze !!! We had no heating except a gas fire in the living room and the bedrooms upstairs below the uninsulated roof! It was fucking freezing.

I remember playing in the snow in this weather event when I was little. It was great.
I have a suggestion how about covering the great storm of 1987 and maybe the 1990 Burns Day storm?

That snow near the road sign was pushed there by a snow plough you can see it’s not that deep.
