Thanks for these videos - been looking for a realistic/informative caravan reno video for ages - you make it seem less daunting! Looking forward to the floor one next!
@@garrysgaragebuilds I'm waiting for you to show us how to finish off the caravan reno first so I have something to copy & follow! haha - Thanks again!
A great watch, caravan damp is the thing of nightmares. I have always thought there must be a way to build in basic damp/water ingress metres at the manufacturing stage and them being activated through the caravans electrical system. I had bad damp in a Swift and very early stage in an Adria, the Swift was 10 years old the Adria 4. Both were indistinguishable from new. The Swift turned out to be a basket case the Adria repaired under warranty.
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. You’ll love working on your van. I hope to get more vids up soon. Life’s been a bit busy lately. Thanks for watching.
Maybe I missed a bit, but did you find the source of the damp? I too have spongy floor, just repaired, could not believe how flimsy the wood is, went through the bottom layer a couple of times, and got epoxy on the drive
Thanks, much appreciated. Thanks for watching. Haha yeah it is a little daunting when you start ripping everything apart, but very achievable with some basic tools and patience.
I wish I could find a camper like that for me and my daughter. It's just the right size for me and her but I guess they don't sell them here in the US. Unless I'm looking them up wrong. Keep up the great work
Can't wait to see an update and we are about to undertake all of this. Just emptying the caravan out and have a few patches of damp from a leaky door. How did you seal yours?
Hi and thanks for the comment. Yeah update coming soon. I took off the aluminium frame and door off the van and refitted with new sealant (sikaflex) and fitted a new door rubber. Can’t wait to get away in it next month. Going to Loch Ness.
@@garrysgaragebuilds bet you're glad to be at the point of using it. I must admit I feel overwhelmed haha we have found a couple of holes on the shell of the caravan so just researching how to go about fixing those...they seem to have caused the damage
Hi Karen, sorry for the late reply. No not finished yet. I will be doing an update vid soon. My life has been really busy the last year with a change in career so unfortunately UA-cam had to go on the back burner as you can probably appreciate. Now I’m back in a job and settled in I look forward to getting back to making more caravan content. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Did you find where the water was coming in from? We've just bought a doer upper, a bit newer than yours as it has a flat roof. Water has gotten in somehow as the front ceiling is a bit saggy and the wall next to the door has gone exactly like yours. The door frame at the bottom of the wall has actually come away from the floor slightly. I had a quick look on the roof and it is perfect, so must be seals around the aerial and roof-lights I suppose. More investigating tomorrow.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah Found it to be coming in at the extractor fan vent and outside light. Yeah sounds like you’re is similar to ours. Have you started it yet? Good luck with it. You’ll enjoy it. Keep me updated. Thanks for watching.
Roof lights, chimneys and windows to some extent are the main offenders.Where there is a opening water will find it and attack.Re=seal as much as you can even unsuspected areas.Good luck
Thanks for the vid! Discovered a section of damp floor and some walls in ours last weekend so going to have a go at sorting it out, albeit a little overwhelmed. Just wondering with the floor, did you just screw in to the insulation or are there batons to screw in to? Thanks
It's a clean van for the age, and if it brings a family joy and the chance to get up and go then of course it's worth it. These older van are much better built than the modern ones and that's a fact!
@@TheOldRogue Disagree there mate ! That is one shoddily built caravan from the start . Modern caravans are sealed far superiorly than the old vans , the sealastic they used then , after a while hardens up and leaks . There seems to be lack of floor support rails on the floor , hence the de-laminating after a few years of been walked over , the walking action compresses the foam under the ply
@@SISU889 Disagree there mate ! you might think that modern caravans are sealed better but they are not.Even the best of materials have a life span and sealants will eventually fail after time.Cant comment on the floor supports as I have a motorhome and have no such problems.

Hi and thanks for the comment. Haha thanks, as you can tell I’m no joiner/carpenter! Just a keen diy’er, you’ll be fine. Get stuck in!

Great video. We’ve bought an old caravan and the walls on one side seem to have this issue. Looks like we’ve got some work to do. 😀👍
Thanks much appreciated. Aw nice one. Good luck with your project. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not worth it!
Good effort Garry you'll get years out of that beast

Cracking job Gary. Really helpful.
Thanks Ben. More caravan content coming, just been so busy with other life stuff that I’ve not had the time to edit much. Thanks again.
What an adorable little helper you’ve got 💕 looking forward to the next video. I’ve recently bought an older van and this is really helpful 🤘🏻

Why aren’t you replacing the wall panels?
Another good video spoiled by music way too loud compared to voice. Sorry.
Sorry, I’ll keep that in mind for future videos.
How to find where the waters getting in ?
Sorry for late reply. Usually sealant that has come away somewhere on the van. In my case it was the extractor fan vent was letting water in.
I feel sure that if caravan makers painted the ply it would not soak up any damp. My caravan is really rotten
Did you cure the problem first?
Yeah it was water going in through the side of extraction fan due to the sealant failing. I’ll go put that in the video description.
Looks good. Thinking shower walls instead of ply? Anyway, good video and it's good to see something being repaired. Skills very few people have now.
Thanks for watching. Just replaced with plywood and repainted. Have considered using wet wall I’m the wash room though. Thanks for the comment.
Floor is common problem I met with this in two caravans ready🙈
Not really a repair have you sorted the leaks?
OK
Ok
not worth the effort in doing it up
