A visual feast to watch. My mother was born in 1920. Some are grand mother's age. I am 74.
You saw how the world looked 100 years ago. Great !
Thanks British pathe for your valuable video

Seems that education system was better in 1920 as compared to 2018

Infrastructure is poor as in, has a chance of collapsing, and bad flow of air, bad foundation, no proper water pumping system, no proper toilets, etc. the sheds also become very unhygienic in wet conditions, bacteria growth, moss etc

Wonderful film.Must have been taken in the late 1930's as the college moved to this campus only in 1933.I lived close by. Further down the road towards the end was the Tram shed where all the Red trams plying Puraswalkam and adjoining areas were stationed. I think in the 1960s Trams were taken off the roads and the Tram shed became Periyar Thidal. That road was full of Bungalows where a lot of Anglo Indians lived.Vepery was a nice place to live in those days.

I was expecting to see more positive comments in this section but found out quite few negative comments about how this institution might have been a place of conversion. And my first thought was, here I am watching a video women getting college education during 20s tamil nadu (one of the most conservative state) and the people giving attention to a speculation over this almost miraculous condition. This literally shows how constant criticism of minority religions in this country has affected it's generally population.Instead feeling happy for those empowered women, these people cared more about a abstract concept.Did any one of these "conversion hunter" commenter thought about why these girls had to to church oriented college?? Because most Hindu/UC funded Colleges were men's only college during those times. This college-St Christopher's is actually a part of American College of madurai, which was one of the first college which permitted women into it. And it was the one of the first college to allow transgender people as it's students too. This college has given our country a Pulitzer prize,a Padma award and many such awards and recognition from its alumni. And yet , instead of concentrating on its efforts to provide quality education to Indians before and after independence ,all these naysayers concentrate on was it's name. Such people need to grow up and stop being so insecure.

Without teacher qualities many are becoming the teachers. Many teachers are talking in the schools also always about the ornaments and stares. Completing the syllabus is important now. I don't think this is from 1920, and is most likely from a later date. Something about the clothes, and also the modern style of school bus, and also the rickshaws, seems to indicate that it might be from later, perhaps the late 1930s or 1940s. Regarding the clothing, the modern (Tagore-style) of sari was rare before the 1930s. The style wrapped between the legs was the norm. Also, younger girls and the boys are wearing Western style clothes. That too, was very rare or unknown in conservative towns such as Madurai. The BFI should check its dating of the reels.

Is this a video of the 1920s or 1940s!! Anyhow, the condition of the videography is in very good condition. 1920s is an era of transformation in India. On one side Gandhiji began his struggle for freedom through non- cooperation where millions of men and women took active participation and on the other side Indian life was entering into a modern phase. Women were going to college, taking role in public life and joining professions from films to medicine and judiciary. This video shows life was so simple. This was also the beginning of Indian socialism. - Abhishek Roy

Gandhi , Patel and Jinnah were all scamsters , white collar criminals, and fraudsters. why bring them here and spoil some beautiful moments. This is Madras, until late 1930s Gandhi was a non entity there. Women from Madras Presidency were getting educated even in 1850s. My great grand mother was a Doctor born in 1880s. My other one operated a Printing Press. Gandhi's swadeshi movement ruined the business and lively hood of South Indians and destroyed their property and economy, while he paved the way for his own folks to buy up everything. He did the same in SA, where he made all South Indians illegal tearing up their resident permits for the sake of Gujrathis. Gandhi, Jinnah, Patels's names and statues all over South India should be pulled and destroyed. I have met lots of these idiots who were crazies about gandhis, I asked them why do we have to step on filth and walk through garbage to walk into your homes ? All these mafos would often keep saying "Vellai karan kalathule". That is when I asked them, they had no answers.
Congressmen destroyed south india with their wikedness and stupidity promising which they could never deliver till to date except to subjucate SI and collect tribute and ethnically cleanse them.

There seems to be no caste discrimination. This may be the reason why many of the oppressed class accepted the loving holy God who loves all human being equally without partiality. (May our creator bless the haters who are going to make abusing comments sooner or later)

No caste discrimination???? How did you even know?
I bet 90% of the students were from developed castes. There might be some BC and MBC.
I don't think there would be many Dalits.
British actually encouraged everyone to learn. But the Brahminical Ideologists of this country abused and discriminated when they came to school. Very good example is Dr.Ambedkar.

These colleges were famous for their etiquette and bringing people different and caste and religion together,if anything this colleges were reason why castism based segregation was reduced amongst the young people in pre-independence india.
