Having rented a car several cars. Here are some thoughts, first when renting a car, you want to get a car that you ordered or better. If you booked a small sedan, don't take a anything smaller. Most rental companies will offer a nicer model if the one you ordered is not available. Also your credit card only covers damage to the car. So you still need some form of insurance to cover damage to another car. So outside usa or canada, its better to buy rental car insurance as its more convenient to be able to walk away and leave vehicle in accident and let the rental company take care of it. Also the canadian driving license is valid in most countries, its best to check in advance and you save money on an international driving permit.
This was a super helpful video! My partner and I are travelling to Europe soon and have never rented a car, so many tips I never thought of like the international permit. And my biggest fear with renting cars abroad is an accident, so hearing how your situation turned out okay put my mind at ease :)
Thanks Jenna! Let us know if you have any other thoughts or questions 😊 Also, the permit isn’t a requirement for every country you travel to, but it’s definitely something worth looking into before you go.
Tbh, i usually benefit from reservation errors and end up getting a nicer car than what i ordered for the same price. I usually book a compact sedan and often end up with a full size sedan or luxury sedan. But i generally stick to the larger rental companies.
We rented a car for our trip in Croatia, it was a totally different way to explore a country! Our Canadian licenses were valid, and we got a manual car which was a lot of fun to drive on their highways.
You didn't need to buy liability insurance? That usually is a much bigger expense, collision insurance is a drop in the bucket most of the time. Or is that not a thing in Europe?
always do the business directly with the actual vendor. don't use third party websites like expedia... there's usually a hidden surcharge or a feature missing to give you 'savings' from my experiences. what you went through was frustrating and it sucks, but i hope you never book flights through third party vendors either. always create a user account and make sure the booking is also logged in your account. good luck on your future travels.
Agreed! Especially for the renting a car. We tend to always book flights with the actual vendor, but I can’t even imagine having to go through this with a flight you paid hundreds if not thousands for.
Rental car companies never honor agreements. How did you get past the unlimited mileage? We always come across this issue when booking through a 3rd party site like Priceline/Expedia etc?
Another great video! Like Dennis said, what's the use of a reservation? I think you should complain to Hertz and get some compensation. And of course they don't allow filming because they don't want everyone to see they are clueless!
Thanks and that’s exactly what we were thinking at the time! 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏼♀️ It sucks even more when you’re in a different country with an entire day planned around your reservation, but luckily for us, there were a couple other rental car companies near by so as soon as we said we’d take our business next door, they finally honoured the reservation.
Hey Steph & Den! Love your videos. I was wondering if you guys can do a video on debt consolidation (specifically credit card debt). I have enough to pay it off but I will have to dip into my savings which I don’t want to do. There are many ads for credit card consolidation but I’m not sure if I trust it. Thanks for reading!
Great video. Do you know if you are covered, or can be covered via paying extra, if you have AAA (or the CA equivalent) for roadside assistance? I'm from the US, went into Canada, and needed a tow. I called AAA and they said I was covered through my existing policy and just had Canadian roadside assistance handle it (think they said they have an exchange agreement with them where AAA takes care of Canadian drivers when they come to the US.
Thanks Amar 😊 great question - we looked into this and for us (CAA side), you’re also covered when you’re travelling into the US, and an additional 32 other countries. They say that it’s based on your membership level, but I’m sure in one of your documents or even with a quick call, they should be able to tell you if the country you’re travelling to is included in the coverage.
How much have you spent on rental cars in the past? Let us know! 🚗
Only had a rental once and it was around a couple thousand 3 I believe at the time
Den's Toronto man energy shining thru dealing the with that car rental warmed my heart 😊😂
Haha 😂 😅🤦🏿♂️
😂

It honestly pist me off how these car rental companies never respect reservation
It didn’t seem to mean much to them!

the thumbnail!! Love it haha
Lol 3:50, Den sounds like me when I question the cashiers at the store about a certain price not matching what they ring up.
Lol 😅😂

Thank you for the video suggestion! We'll definitely add it to the list 😊
Those rental car places are always playing games with people smh
I know right! We can laugh about the situation now, but trust me, in the moment…😅

They never have the car you reserved.
I know! It’s super frustrating!
OK GOT IT
