No musical work has had a more profound impact on my life than The Desert Music. I bought a cassette of it in 1990 after by chance seeing it in a music store shortly after discovering Steve Reich at college - and I wore it almost to the point of erasure in just 18 months before investing in a CD. It altered the way I compose music and those that most exhibit its influence are among what I consider my best work.
I also discovered Steve Reich in school. A music teacher made us listen to "Music for 18 Musicians". Bold move, I think, but I'm still grateful he did that!
this is an incredible piece of music. one of the things that makes it incredible is its relentlessness, its ceaselessness. it rarely if ever stops to take a breath. there's never a break in the momentum. it's like a never ending rhythmic jam. like a hypnotic chant or prayer. and i can tell all done without electronic manipulation or studio effects. vocally, it sounds quite challenging. the overall effect is one of purity, intensity, and strength; a powerful and spellbinding magic results.
I think it's a masterpiece. I'm almost in tears when the final movement sings about the light. I think Reich and Williams are really trying to get us to think here . . PS if you're interested you might want to read more about William Carlos Williams too. Interesting . .

Thank you Steve Reich. You were one of the first and for the very best at unlocking the power of repetition and additive processes to induce deep states in the listener. Your music has made me a better person, and the world a better place.
Yes, of course, but I think it's because Tehillim is a more intimate piece, while The Desert Music is such an epic piece, really an odyssey, and a piece that takes you on a journey. Listeners are lifted off their feet!
The only way I can describe the hallelujah chorus of Tehillim is propulsive. Every single time I listen to it, from the very first time I heard it, it both makes me well up and makes me want to run around it gets me so energised. Unparalleled.
What a Gem! I found this by accident and remembered how much I loved Desert Music, I like many wore out the cassette of it that I had by playing over and over and over again. And now, I have been gifted by Tehillim! Sheer auditory joy! Thank you to Steve Reich and all the incredible musicians who make our world magical.
Hallelujah ! This is for Christians and Jews alike - no need to say more. And then - the desert: "Imagine a plain and yourself running, just running". This was what Reich himself felt when he listened to the fast parts. I neary cried when I read this, for I like it fast, and I like running, and running. And then William Carlos Williams ...
I sang Desert Music with the U.C. Chamber Chorus under John Kendall Bailey several years ago. Still one of my favorites and listen occasionally to the recording made then. Thanks for sending this reminder.
Tehillim offers a rich exploration of texture and dense counterpoint. Reich creates mysterious and ecstatic walls of sound. Great recording of the desert music as well, thank you.
Listened to The Desert Music on a cassette deck in my car while driving from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim - must have been 28 years ago...it's just as powerful today....
Simon Moore Still, Michael Tilson Thomas' conducting is more dense, which, to my mind, comes nearer the "dramatic" what the "desert theme" is about. Do you see what I mean? ( I'm no native English speaking). As to the diction - you may be right, I'm not the one to judge this properly ...
Stoll Silwe Yes I agree that MTT and Edo de Wart are great conductors for Reich's Music and the orchestral impact is more dramatic but it's good to hear Emily Dickinson's verses uttered more clearly.
Great! I was thinking .. how can it be, that I know exactly what you're talking about? I own the record "The Wound Dresser" by Adams, in addition to many of Reich's records and CDs. Grüße aus Deutschland !
I had thought that over many listenings and many years, I had firmly established Music for 18 Musicians as my favorite Reich piece. Wrong again! (happily) :-)
I used to say I loathed this version of desert music but I have been swayed. Desert music is a stand alone piece. Its awe inspiring! Is there anything that even resembles it besides Harmonium?
This is a great performance of "The Desert Music". Very zesty and makes me think about the piece in a different way from the classic "Steve Reich and Musicians" performance from decades ago. I first heard "The Desert Music" by chance in a BBC Proms broadcast in the late 1980s and I remember it captivated me like no other music I had heard before. An amazing piece quite apart from the performance!
Alarm Will Sound has out-definitive'd the definitive recordings of these pieces, the ones made by Reich and his ensemble. I'm pretty sure Reich himself has said this.
Sorry, but for me all Tempi of The Desert Music are too fast. The duration is originally 47’. Pierson’s Version is 43’ That’s substantial and the atmosphere of each movement is not represented with always too fast tempi. Please here the original version with MTT as conductor. Much more convincing and the perfect tempi!!
The Desert Music is scored for such a big orchestra. But I feel like he doesn't bring out interesting timbres enough. It's too homogeneous. The big orchestra kind of seems like a waste.
I can listen to Tehillim 10 times in a row without getting tired... more and more bliss...
Tehillim changed my life, 1:50 one of the most beautiful chord progression of our solar system~~~
thanks for the warning I’m at 1:40
I’m still here. I hope whatever lead you here. That whatever you’re going through. Keep going!

sounds maybe like you were raised on pop and dance ?
I love all of Steve Reich's works. John Adams varies more rhythmically,
Reich is more monotonous, mantric.

don't worry that's completely normal
I love Tehillim because it's so different from most Reich yet preserves his spirit
What's with all the people here for Desert Music? What about Tehillim? Show some love for that one too!

I really love Tehillim. Have done for roughly forty years.
The only way I can describe the hallelujah chorus of Tehillim is propulsive. Every single time I listen to it, from the very first time I heard it, it both makes me well up and makes me want to run around it gets me so energised. Unparalleled.

Oh yeah. The ultimate road trip music...
Desert Music: what can compare in it's beauty!? Breath taking.
The second movement of Tehillim is simply magical.
The vocalists on this recording are so much better than on some of the other versions here on UA-cam!
Great to hear the 'chamber version' of the Desert Music; it works well and the diction is clearer.

Simon Moore I've just been looking at my old record. The verses are by Wiliam Carlos Williams
Stoll Silwe Aha, got it wrong! Many thanks, I was confusing the librettist with John Adams' Harmonium, although the first part (of that) is by Donne.!
Great! I was thinking .. how can it be, that I know exactly what you're talking about? I own the record "The Wound Dresser" by Adams, in addition to many of Reich's records and CDs. Grüße aus Deutschland !

Hebrew.
"Tehillim" means Psalms. The lyrics are verses from that book of the Bible.
