Vauxhall Senator CD 3.0 24V parked up for months as it won't run properly. Can we solve the problem?

  • We were asked to take a look at this awesome Irmscher kitted Senator CD 3.0 24v which had been parked since August due to constantly cutting out and running poorly. Our prime suspect was corroded fuel pump relay terminals, but we packed all the tools into our (frozen) Omega 2.5 V6 GLS estate and went for a look. The silky smooth straight six three litre is (to our dismay 😂) not an engine we are familiar with but all the mechanical and electrical principles of Vauxhalls during this era are the same.
If you want to skip the baltic Omega faffing, the Senator stuff starts at 9 minutes 😂
We would love to come back and have a good drive of this early 90s executive (and police) icon in the summer 😁

This is my old car. Bought it in 2006 from a local 2nd hand dealer who'd taken it in as a part ex, no MOT (exhaust & cracked windscreen) & over the next 7 years spent approx. £15k on it (whilst using it as my daily driver). Replaced it with a VXR8 as my daily with a Lotus Carlton in the garage. Still love this Senny. The speedo was changed to ex-plod calibrated spec when the paint started to peel & foul the needle (lucky to find one with 1k miles of the original mileage) & is absolutely spot on accurate (no 10% discretion here). Head gasket went at 180k & I took the opportunity to buy a replacement head from Damico Engineering with polished/ported inlet, new guides, uprated timing chain & ALL new bolts, studs & gaskets. S/S sports exhaust with decat pipes gives that lovely sound. Obviously the looks are the main thing with the Irmscher bodykit & paint by Brechland Bodytech in Norfolk (a near 3 hour drive from my place but they did my Lotus Carlton which I couldn't fault). Eventually I decided to sell as to me it was too good to be used as daily & sit outside in all weathers (which I see its still doing :-( ). The transformation can be seen here:- app.photobucket.com/u/mwinkworth/a/4702069c-282c-42a5-8616-73f41aab4950

That brings back memories. I had gone the Opel Ascona, Vauxhall Carlton, Vauxhaull Royale, Senator 2.5, 3.0 then 3.0 24v route in the late 80s early 90s. The last L reg was brilliant. The handbook actually said in sport mode it wouldn't go into top until 127mph. A true Autobahnstormer. I also thought they were better without the digital dash too. I actually liked the original Chip Cutter grille too. Possibly why I liked the Dolomite Sprint as a kid.

Excellent ! Many thanks .One of my best pals was a police driver for North Yorkshire police. They had Cavalier SRi and Senators . The latter for main A road use such as the A1 . When first driving the Senator he was advised that over 130mph it needed a careful hand. There is a long long gentle left hand bend on the dual carriageway Malton by pass. His boss said you could take it at 140mph . He was not happy that was sensible . But on a lovely summer evening going to a shout towards York he decided to see what it would do. He had to use both lanes to get the Senator round that long bend at 140. He really thought he was going to crash. Anyway, he later told his boss with pride what he’d done. Boss was horrified as he was, of course, pulling his leg . Those were the days .

In the days before clever auto gearboxes, the manual 24v was the one to have. Much favoured by the police as manual was a zero cost option (auto was the default) & the 0-60 was nearly 3 seconds quicker than the auto. Handled well too. Made 2.9 Granada look like it was in reverse. Good as decent BMW

    • @kevinmanns7170
      @kevinmanns7170 3 роки тому

The manual gearbox was absolute rubbish. I had two 24V autos, one Vauxhall, one Opel. In reality the difference was about half an a second to 60 mph, but the MT75 Manual was a really weak gearbox. Later on I owned an Omega 3.0 Litre MV6 with the manual box. It failed twice within 12000 miles. The 1st time it stuck in reverse. The 2nd time synchromesh went on 2nd & 3rd gears. The Omega felt heavier and was Bus like to drive. Generally an inferior car compared with the Senator, and nowhere near as fast. The Ecotec 3.0 litre V6 was a troublesome engine. The Cam covers were made of plastic and warped at approx 80 000 miles causing severe oil leaks directly onto the exhaust manifolds, causing large plumes of smoke. Also, the Crankshaft position sensor failed. Never had any of these problems with either Senator. Fantastic cars. Wish I still had my first one. I now drive a 400bhp Jaguar XJR, but I'd swap it for a mint 24V Senator auto in a heartbeat.

I was amazed by my Omegas handling, for a big car i could fairly sling mine round bends.....mine was the 2.2DTi CD saloon....nice enough but i ragged it everywhere and only managed 29mpg average!!.
The best car i've owned though, and i've had many nice Vauxhalls.
Also, that Senator looks amazing.....the MD of my (sadly now defunct) local Vauxhall dealer, Atkinsons and Co, had one in the Pearl Red.
I do miss these old big Vauxhalls, carpeted door cards, thick velour carpets, huge leather or velour seats...luxury!

Senator what a absolute beast of a car. I bought a Vauxhall Carlton saloon off a company rep car went on for ever I had it six years never failed an mot having children and car had to go.
The Carlton had a massive boot I could fit four suitcases in next to each other and room for four hand luggage bags.

I'll bet that's the sunroof drain on the Senator, that used to be a very common issue with civilian Senators. The police cars didn't get that issue as they didn't have the sunroof. The fuel pump relay and crank sensor are both logical places to check, the wiring on the crank sensor gets cooked where it runs across the front of the block and the copper conductor breaks down, and, like in the Volvo 7 and 9 series, the fuel pump relay gets cooked and becomes temperamental...
That certainly looks like the police calibrated speedo in this one, but those are usually marked as calibrated and with the name of the electronics company that calibrated them, whose name I can't remember now. It could be that the later Senators with the analogue cluster got the same style printing on the face as police vehicles to save money on producing two types of speedo face. It's interesting this car has the analogue dash as the digital dash was standard fit on the CD, with the analogue a no-cost option that was almost never chosen. I've only ever seen the analogue dash in police Senator CDs, as the forces that ran them often had full spec CDs as staff cars for senior officers, but with manual transmission and, sometimes, no sunroof. There's plenty of old news footage of various chief constables turning up at various events in Senator CDs , and there may still be a couple of those cars knocking around which may well be the holy grail of Senators, the full wood and leather interior, the 24v lump under the bonnet with the Irmscher police tweaks, manual gearbox and, sometimes, no leaky sunroof so less in the way of rust issues...
I have to say that I'm not a fan of the Irmscher body kit on that one, purely because the Senator was a great looking car anyway and body kits from that period weren't exactly subtle. I do like the Irmscher grille, something that was generally standard fit on police cars, and it's just nice to see one of these big old beasties still around and in very well cared for condition as they seem to be close to extinct in the UK now...

This month I've gone down a big Vauxhall rabbithole: Viscount, Carlton, Viceroy, Royale, Senator, Omega. I love them. Must've been so much car for the money. It's such a shame the way that the market has gone. It's the same with other marques like Renault Safrane, Citroën C6, Peugeot 607, Ford Scorpio etc. I love the Vauxhalls though. I've lost faith in PSA keeping the GM vibe unfortunately.

We always made great progress on the motorway's....had something to do with it being white I think.
