Had the pleasure of catching Sage live years ago after jamming him for years....bucket list shit for me....true poet and lyrical wizard and is definitely the real deal. Will one day tell my grandchildren about the man and hopefully they will appreciate this talent as well
I got to see Sage live before I knew who he was. I went to an Atmosphere show almost 20 years ago and Sage performed too. Informed my musical tastes for the rest of my life.
This is a fantastic piece! This sums up my childhood perfectly! I love different styles of rock now and I am a poet and sing in a band myself. However, if it were not for me experiencing so much hip-hop first... I probably wouldn't have the style of poetry, cadence/rhyme scheme, nor song structure I create today.
I fell like this hit my heart 21 years ago....maybe 22. But the recording I still have burned onto a cd from 20 something years ago still sounds raw ad fuck.
He's the only MC using hockey references in his art , he's so close to Boston but we can't claim him and it sucks lol . I'm gonna go listen to "beauty marks" after this
I grew up 45 minutes from Boston. I was fully involved in the scene. But the main reason Boston can never claim me is because they never really accepted me. I did win the Super Bowl battle in 1999 though. That was in Boston which included pretty much every Boston emcee worth their weight in gold at the time. That was fun. Boston should have adopted a kid.
@therealsagefrancis Born and raised here dudemanbro . I've spread the Sage to everyone , all over the years (that sounded gross , sorry) . You know your weight in gold my ninja . I put a small flag of an iron on personal journals cover on top of the pru ... you're golden , pony boy (joking)
just moments before the next person on stage* "what is this, I can't follow this up, everything I say will be trash compared to that sage's words, I quit!!!"
This is dope, for sure! But any real Sage fan knows this from when he first did it 15 years ago on his Sick Of mixtape series and was much more authentic.
I don't think he's saying anything against metal, I think he just comes forth with why he ventured into rap instead of rock as it just wasn't what he was vibing with at the time. I'm like you though, I don't diss any genre whatsoever. I listen to pop, rock, psytrance, glitch, rap, edm, metal, rock, jazz and classical music and can probably hold a low level discussion about any genre and extensive ones within psytrance, rap and some about music history. I just love sound in general I guess and find people to hold one genre over another to underestimate the power of one due to personal preferences as they all hold equal value (in my opinion) in the evolution of music, what you can do with them and which directions they take. Sure, you can debate the importance of how much it has affected music as a whole but in the end it's all rhythm and you can't beat that.
Don’t alienate a section of your fan base now Sage. A lot of Metal Guys including myself really like your rhymes and your music because you are intelligent and a huge cut above the rest of the hip hop community. We look at Sage as the Punk Rock Of Hip Hop! I mean that as a big compliment. So please don’t speak ill of Rock Music!
imo this was not speaking ill of rock music. And I'm not sure what kind of victim pretzels you need to twist yourself in to take it that way. this was speaking ill of cultural appropriation.
Sage is a genius no doubt...But he's also just doing beat peotry and his rap style is sorta the same....While I respect his abilities it doesn't translate very well to music in my humble fan opinion...
@@VanPebble the thing is, I’m really not a fan of beat poetry. And that’s not something I ever wanted or tried to emulate. But I definitely get a kick out of those comparisons
@@therealsagefrancis Just wondering how it took you this long to see and care about this comment...Haha...Love and respect for what it's worth...Happy to see you have a family and all of that without being too creepy and personal...Peace
@@VanPebble someone mentioned they wanted me to perform this at a show so I checked this performance of it to see if it would inspire me to work it into my set. I saw your comment and responded to it. That’s pretty much how it all went down, sir. Heh
still the MOST underrated, under-appreciated emcee of all time.
This is a piece of hiphop history to me

I listen to both rap and metal, why limit yourself, be open to all genres.

Write a book and publish it somewhere someone gives a fuck, because here, in fact, no one gives a fuck.

Terribly underrated
I had no idea he could beatbox.......this man is just a legend.
Interesting. I saw the thumbnail and I was like "no, not sage" but he was self aware when holding up the horn hand sign.
