Glad I came across this today, what a treat! I got to meet Peter at Webster Hall in NYC on his tour a few years ago.

    Loved this!
Dead Can Dance are my favourite ever band, so it was great to hear all your thoughts and of course Peter's thoughts and memories. The book is fantastic and I'm very glad to have one of those vinyl copies of Pathways and Dawns. I would also love to hear Taqaharu's Leaving live, as well as anything else Peter wants to play.

Finally got around to watching this and it was a treat! Great to hear Ulrich's stories, reminiscences, insights into Perry's and Gerrard's creative process and rigorous standards, and some if his own personal feelings on the body of work, both that which he played on and that which he didn't. So glad you guys touched on the masterpiece Sleeps with the Fishes, as well as Ulrich's solo work. I'll never forget encountering "Teqaharu's Leaving" for the first time-still elicits chills on every listen.
Greg, thought your takes were pretty spicy on this one! I agree Spiritchaser seems somewhat underrated somehow within the DCD fanbase. Glad for you that Anastasis was able to creep so high up in the discography for you. I have enjoyed the new albums, and went all in on the first one (special edition CD, LP, t-shirt Frank has on, tickets to see them at Beacon in NYC) but solo and collaborative albums like Perry's Ark and Gerrard & Cassidy's Immortal Memory go further to scratching that itch. The exception being "Return of the She-King."
    Frank, I appreciate the shout-out.
Bret, I love your music theory and music teacher attention ti details and nuances and the little technical things you call attention to and ask about.
I'm gonna dig out all my DCD and Ulrich records and CDs now-thanks!

Glad you were able to make time for this one, Kevin. It was a real treat to film. I'm pretty excited about the 2LP reissue of Eye of the Hunter coming out next week. The bonus live disc should be interesting to hear. I try to bring up Sleeps with the Fishes any chance I can. :) Happy you enjoyed this one!

I love the whole discog, I consider all the albums by DCD from the first to the last great, but I always return to Serpent's Egg/Garden of The Arcane Delights.
I wish the same thing happened to me with Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, but unfortunately it doesn't happen.

Hi Bret, what an unexpected surprise to see a new video on Dead Can Dance, and especially one that features Peter Ulrich who I've always admired. While I was aware of his book and have read some positive comments on it, I'll admit it had totally slipped my mind to pick up a copy. Well, that's fixed now, and I put in an order through your link and now very happily excited to dig into it. Pathways and Dawns has always been a favorite of mine, and I was happy to get a vinyl copy last year (at last).
I've been fortunate enough to see DCD live 3 times, the first being in 1990 in Denver, which was an unforgettable experience. I last saw them here in Austin, and if you've ever watched one of my video's you'll see the Anastasis lithograph from that show that hangs with pride over my desk (and always will). I have a couple of long boring videos on my DCD collection and yet another on solo stuff, they go back aways, but there's a ton of cool items to show, probably most of which the 4 of you already have, but still it was one of the highlights I was able to do before my UA-cam retirement.
It goes without saying DCD is one of, if not the most important bands that's shaped my musical journey and passion for the past 40 years. I've never really thought about doing a ranking of their albums, I'm really not sure I could or want to frankly, but I did enjoy the thoughts on each album that the 4 of you brought to the table more so the ranking. I think it's the same thought's or close to what you said regarding more what album has been part of our personal experiences. But I do truly love them all. I'm pretty sure for the record, they didn't WANT to change the cover to Into the Labyrinth, they lost the rights to the artwork on it, so 4AD had to reissue it with a different cover.
Somewhere down the road, I'd love you to do another one of these for all the solo albums, soundtracks etc. Would be another epic celebration of some amazing work I'm sure of.
I'll let you know what I think of the Peter's book in a week or so as a follow up but I'm very confident it will be really interesting and detailed. Thanks for the very enjoyable video. It was terrific to hear Peter's stories about the albums, tours and songs. I'm not sure if he'll read comments on this video but if you do any follow up with him, please pass along my warmest best wishes.

James! Very happy that you set aside a couple of hours to watch this one. It was an absolute treat to chat with Peter. I hope that you'll enjoy his book as much as I did. Definitely cycle back and let me know your thoughts after you're done reading. I will pass on your words to him. Thanks again, James.

amazing and thoughtful video, made better by peter joining. thanks for making me aware of his book.
i had the same thought as frank, in that Within the Realm is a desert island record for me without a doubt.
    i never tire of persephone.
    i'm putting it this way:
    1. Within the Realm....
    2. Spleen and Ideal
    3. DCD/ Arcane Delights
    4. Toward the Within
    5. Into the Labyrinth
    6. Anastasis
    7. Aion
    8. Serpent's Egg
    9. Spiritchaser
    10. Dionysus
but again, as you said, there is nothing bad here.

I really appreciated the acknowledgement that so much of the 1990 live set never made it to studio recording. All of those songs were interesting and some were superb. My favorite is one that Brendan identified as "Here Comes the Little Man," which can be found on a couple of bootlegs as "They Don't Even Lie" or "They Don't Even Cry," probably because those are the only lyrics the bootlegger could discern. It was an absolutely lovely Aion-era Brendan composition that he later said was never really completed. I was fortunate to hear it at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts, the best version I've heard, but alas long ago lost the bootleg cassette of that show that someone had shared. It'll probably never be known by most current DCD fans, a pity.

Wait what? So they rank DCD albums from worst to best? I cannot imagine doing this myself. I see all their music as equal, with each being different and telling another story.

Thanks for stopping by. We're not thinking of anything as 'worst' - especially in the case of this great band. More like, we're discussing each album in order, each of us leading up to our absolute favorite - with insight from original drummer Peter Ulrich. Hope you were able to catch the whole episode.

Just for the record ( pun intended) the cellos on 'Enigma of the Absolute' were written and performed by me - Gus Ferguson . I'm particularly proud of this as 'Spleen and Ideal' was the first album i was involved in as a budding young musician and that cello part was one of the very few parts ( maybe the only one?) not written by Brendan or Lisa. I also played cello on 'Within the Realm of a Dying Sun'. Great to see Peter after all these years.

Hi, new DCD fan here and loved this video! I’m ashamed to say I’m 53 and hadn’t listened to them until very recently. Been into bands like Joy Division, The Cure etc for decades, but for some reason DCD had escaped me. Only listened properly to the debut and Spleen & Ideal so far and love them both, but looking forward to exploring the rest now 👍

I also met Brendan and his brother in Poland the next day after a show in 2019 before Covid would rear its ugly little head.
