Another one: Midwest Angelica: If Trazyn the Infinite did an oopsie and threw what he dubbed as a *weird-looking rock* into a random portal and into a galaxy.
I think Midwest Angelica is the best presentation of ANY analog horror. Every bit of itales perfect sense and feels real. It breaks free from the biggest problem analog horror has, which is that question of "why are they making VHS tapes about this?"
"I'm not even gonna pretend to understand what these waves are telling us, but they certainly seem odd" - every viewer watching a new analog horror for the first time 😅
It is genuinely awesome and heartwarming to see the turnabout that has happened for Midwest Angelica. Back when I first discovered it when there were only a few uploads, it was a _criminally_ underrated series that most review and analysis channels completely ignored and which got buried in the wave of analog horror projects despite its absolutely stellar production work and unique approach. Now it's being (correctly) held up as one of the absolute pillars of the genre. Absolute mad respect to the creators of this project.
im pretty sure the whole 'easter' thing with dr vega is a ref to chainsaw man, because in chainsaw man, there is a character who gets so overloaded with knowledge that they can only say 'halloween'. so maybe dr vega has all knowlege, idk. im just a guy on the damn internet
8:37 the funny thing is, Lovecraft's views actually werent even in line with the time period he live in. even at that time people were like "yo dude that's a bit much, i dunno about all that."
In the wake of the fire, Nero erected a huge palace. While that may look bad, it's worth noting that he provided housing in said palace to the victims of the fire. Not only that, but Nero's villainous nature is believed to be - at least somewhat - exaggerated by christian historians, due to Nero's cruel treatment of the, at the time, new religion's members. For this he has been equated with the anti-christ many times, which I believe is why the character was named after him
What really gets me is how they just assume they can use the akashic plane to communicate/make there super soldiers when it's linked directly to the hive mind of Azazel. They are essentially plugging their brains directly into AZ-001. Plus the whole signing over total command to someone they know is infected and can't communicate with assuming their "cure" will work after only testing it on people free of infection. Also doing training in there "secret" base with live organisms they know are plugged into the hive mind? Do they all have a death wish?
I don't know why, but Sci-fi is the one genre my brain canNOT grasp lol. You two did such a great job with getting things explained in a way that was easy to follow, then a condensed recap! Thank you so much for all the hard work! :3
Ode to Joy during Homebound is likely a reference to the ADV VHS trailer for Evangelion, as the creator makes several other Evangelion references in the series! I mean, honestly the entire series clearly takes inspiration from the Eva story and you could think of it as a fan rewrite of the story leading up to 2nd impact
I was watching half asleep until I read this comment and I can totally see it. That seen with the entity in front of the sunset is almost exactly the same as the shot of Bardiel (inside EVA-03) when it wakes up. Plus the scene with Home Delta looks full-on like a scene of Gendou and Fuyutsuki talking in his office which I swear has basically never had a real source lighting of any sort in any iteration (how does he see??? the glare off his glasses???).
@@DeltafangEX also the way the text on screen flickers rapidly is how on screen messages in the NERV control room were too. I would never call it a rip off though bc the creator has iterated wildly on the concept of Eva and *all* ideas, all art are iterative...I just see his influences more clearly than I might on some other creators.
@@jasonhunter2819 Oops, just realized that it could be taken to mean I was falling asleep _because_ of the video. It's more that horror (analog or otherwise) has been my go-to comfy content for getting to sleep nowadays. As for being a rip-off, I don't feel its a rip off at all. If anything, I love it when creators show their love for what inspired them by wearing it on their sleeve. To me, that's just how art works. While we pride ourselves on "complete" originality (whatever that means), it would be a great disservice to overlook how the media we enjoy affects the creative process. The Babel analogy fits into this idea quite well actually: Human beings don't exist alone after all, we build and build and build...but just because we're so high up that we can no longer see the ground doesn't mean this building's foundation (and the first dozen floors) simply do not exist. At the same, you can change the architectural design all you like but very rarely does someone come along and build what is essentially the foundation of an entirely new building on what should have been the 10,000th floor. But since we're all building together, you can contribute in any way you like to the floors you were born and raised on - whether you attempt your own spin on what has worked before, paint the place a different color, simply add a few windows, or dedicate all of your efforts to the most accomplished creators. At the end of the day (and despite what Midwest Angelica is trying to teach us), I think that God gave Babel's builders multiple languages as a test - one that we utterly failed. If the work was so important and within our power to complete, we would have just kept building. It would have taken longer , yes, but we would have improved ourselves by virtue of putting in the effort to understand each other despite the language barrier. We would have had to learn strength of character, - instead of solely relying on strength of arms and knowledge. Then we might have been worthy of heaven....maybe. Just my two cents.
@@basedsketch4133 It's not so much that everything is anime related as much as everything is simply...related. If you were to look at inspirations from the Japanese side, you'd see that they were equally inspired by Western media while still doing their own thing. How many of them have publicly waxed lyrical about their love for movies like Blade Runner or Trainspotting or Pulp Fiction? You don't even need to keep it purely Western to Eastern or vice versa. Hemingway was inspired by other poets like Joyce. The myths of neighboring cultures like Greece and Scandinavia and a love of languages pushed Tolkien to write what eventually would become Lord of the Rings (whether you believe he did it to create an English mythology or not). Hell, think about just how many iterations there have been on classics like Atlantis or The Divine Comedy in the past hundred years alone! And those are just the ones that you know of-many will inevitably be lost to time. And each of those in turn inspires someone else to continue building more and more complex ideas and concepts. All that said though...I DO think both the scene with the entity in the sunset sunset and the shot of them talking-one standing, one at a desk, but both shadowed from the viewer-with Babel creeping in the background and the esoteric symbology on the ground are particularly inspired. Nothing wrong with that, I say.

The scientist at 6:00 saying “Christ, that’s huge. The fuck did we get into?” concerns me considering that an alien biomass from space stumps even the smartest minds in the US
In some aspects it does give the thing vibes especially if we go onto why the thing assimilated people in that movie, there exists a short story from the aliens pov known as the things and its POV has humans being nothing but chaotic creatures simply needing a guiding hand by a superior species to become united,it become one. Its kinda like why youll find it went for certain people meanwhile avoiding others altogether,it searches for those that up its ante of survival while gaining the intelligence of whatever it assimilated wholely.
