Really great video. Thank you! As a Sprint ST and an Aprilia Shiver owner I was really interested in your comments. BTW -- I know you can't do this in the UK, but D&D pipes (CAT and SAI eliminated) on the Sprint ST are beyond incredible -- and oh the overrun burble -- heavenly. Here's a clip (search under "what a triple really sounds like") after I installed them. Guaranteed to scare babies, rattle windows, and unleash the triple beast.

The 2005 bike you are riding was setup to favour lower end, newer models of sprint moved rpm favour 2400rpm upwards ! Your commentary is very clear and easy to listen to. brilliant diplomacy !!
Just bought an 08 Sprint ST, test rode this morning. Been on a Triumph Cruiser for 3 years, impressed with the Sprint, smooth easy to ride bike, wound her up in 2nd gear, certainly shifts...got the 3 panniers as well....
I agree. I ride a SV650 SK3 and currently undertaking the RoSPA advanced riding course and in that you have to keep the back brake covered at all times. That means that with Size 9 feet, size 10 in boots, I have to have the boot further towards the front so that the peg is further back in the boot to enable this to be accomplished.
As soon as you pulled away I felt nostalgic for my ST1050, bought new in mid 2007 and sold in Sept 2008 when I changed to a 2005 Ducati ST3. That ST3 was joined by a cheap 2003 BMW Rockster and both are being sold on Sat for a new KTM 990SMT.
I put Spanish Ixil pipes on my Sprint and it howled beautifully! Still a great bike and more of a success than the Sprint GT.

Hi stranger, how's life? It's the C3. I loved it so much I bought a 2nd one for my Tuono in matt black. In the UK they shoud be £450.00 but I found them at £219.00 which is $429.00 NZ. Looks like a review is definately in order as a few people have mentioned it.
I'll have a word with Paul when I get to the shop tomorrow, if it's sunny next Monday and he's free, we'll do it then. It's the new cross plane model too.

I have a "Pinlock" visor so it doesn't steam up. For £12.00 or so you can buy an "Oxford Ultra clear" insert. They stick on and stop the visor steaming up too. I fitted one to a customers helmet the other day and it worked perfectly.
The VFR750 is one of my fave bikes even though I never owned one.
You put whichever part of the foot on the peg as you feel comfortable, as long as it's safe, you don't scrape your foot when going round corners and you're in control of the bike. It's just personal opinion.
I have a very late ST1050, (Reg 2012) now has 400 miles on the clock. I had many umps before, street triple, Daytona 955i and a bonni. The new ST is great although they no longer make it, shame. The box was clunky until I watched your advanced gearshift video (fine now with the practice! well pleased with my new skill). However, I'm 39 years old (well 40) and even with the higher bars she still gives me pins and needles too. Unlike the Daytona I no longer get back ache though. Love the AP!

These are still, in 2018, this video was 3 years ago, sitting at £3000 used on a 2005 25-35k. Having a fairing is a bonus in cold, wet or windy weather. You'd notice it all on a naked bike.
Correct, there's a flip up inner sun shield. I'll do a review on the C3 soon.
The bikes I tend to ride now days are 4 strokes. Due to emissionsccontrol, we don't have much choice. I may drag my yamaha rd250 lc out soon to show you.

Well you won't go far wrong with one of these, it felt very stable, even at silly speeds and will take luggage well.
Thinking about an st for this year, properly look at 08 or newer. Lots of issues sorted late07 I believe. Nice vid
Great vid! I own an '08 model, with ABS, and I've no problems with the brakes, I regularly practice hard braking on freeway offramps, and I can easily unload the rear suspension with a good hard progressive squeeze on the lever.
As to the transmission, yes, the chain is a bit fiddly, because if there's any slack at all it rubs against the stowed centerstand. So either it's too tight, or it rattles.
Something else I've noted (along with quite a few ST 1050 owners) is that the "headlamps are crap". I swapped mine out for a set of hyperwhite bulbs and they still don't really light up much. The low beam has this triangular pattern that barely reaches the side of the road, so good luck illuminating deer's eyes in the brush before they jump out into your path at night. High beam... honestly, it's only good as a modulator for oncoming traffic, because at night it really doesn't add much help. Perhaps if Triumph allowed for a bit of focal adjustment behind those HID lenses, you could get a better spread of light.. but they didn't put that in. So what you get is this rather wimpy narrow cone straight in front of you, much like a third low beam that's adjusted up slightly.
As for the riding position and the wrists, I've found that on long trips, i'm doing one of two things... leaning further forward against the tank and letting my hands rest on the bars rather than gripping them, or sitting straight up with my clutch hand on my hip. I have a throttle rocker as well, and... it doesn't really help matters. An actual 'cruise control' throttle lock arrangement would work better.
One thing you guys didn't do was test out the maneuverability. Lane changes are effortless on this bike, just a quick assertive push on the bar and you're in the next lane, or safely around the box in the road or whatnot. The torque curve on the triple motor is such that you can overtake without downshifting, pretty much from 2k all the way up to about 8k. It also means great gas mileage - stick it in top gear and feed it just enough gas to maintain, 65-70mph on the highway. It's a lot different than an inline four, where you have to be mindful of where your powerband is.
I do wish it had a hydraulic clutch. People may hate them because you have to tend to them, make sure the fluid is OK and there's no air bubbles in the line and so on... but honestly, I cannot stand having to adjust a clutch cable's tension.
If all you're doing is filming the rides and don't need sound/voice, the Drift HD720 (£100) is perfect and all you need, for voice, the Drift HD1080 (£125) and for whistles and bells, the Drift Ghost (£225 with crafty10 code) I also like the Hero 2 (not 3) for using on the bike.

The Triple is such a fantastic engine. Not bashing the Tuono, great looking bike and I'm sure it's a great ride.

That was a stroke of luck then wasn't it? I'd not planned on doing this review either. I prefer it to the VFR800 (I've had 3 of them) as I had a problem with the.....yep, fuel injection mapping! lol, and the seat wasn't comfy and it was top heavy. I much preferred the VFR750. Richard rides the ST all year round so that isn't a problem and I think he's gonna keep it if he goes for the Tuono cos it's good for passengers.
Hi, on your video you very briefly mask out the clocks, to hide how slow your'e going, (lol) at that point. How do you do that, what software did you use. I only ask as I have some footage which I would love to put on You Tube of a person but I need to mask out their face to conceal their identity and embarrassment.
Tuono everytime. From 2003 to present day the maddest badest bike on the planet and also the most comfort with power. Better then any Tiger, Sprint, KTM Supermoto, MV....any of them. Test ride on and you will want one.
Except has poor mileage and small tank = terrible range. A known problem with these bikes.

Is the Sprint too powerful as a first big bike after I have passed my mod 2 (which I have)?
No. It has a fair amount of top end but as long as you exercise self-control the power isn't too excessive. There's enough of a throttle delay to keep you in check. My friend's first street bike was an ST.
No bike is to powerful as your first bike. Its all down to the rider the bike will only go as fast as you want.
A_Wise_Young_Man It's a very manageable bike at low end. Very quick regardless, easy to ride, sounds awesome at top end and is very smooth. Pops and spits on the overrun which is a joy. Had mine three years and absolutely no problems mechanically or dealing with stupidity, ten year old bike. Looks nice in dark blue

It's a place called lids direct in the UK but I've just checked and they don't sell them any more, maybe they were stopped at that price, sorry. Helmet city in the UK do them at $665,00 NZ
how many kilometers were on Richards Sprint ST?
im looking into getting a Sprint GT but not sure on how reliable the motor is. as i will be wanting to keep the bike for the next 5 to 10 years.

Are aprilla and triumph the big bike companys over there. they are rare here is the states, we pretty much just have yamaha, suzuki, and honda
$429 NZD? Can you tell me where you got it from at that price? Crikey I always knew we got ripped off down here in the colonies! Yes the C2 and C3 are very different helmets, the biggest difference for me is the weight. How can you go wrong with a flip up helmet that looks like a sports helmet, with a pin lock visor and drop down shades? A review would be good, I'd do one but I talk too fast!
my 2 stroke was a aprillia rs125.. and that had no power low end.. but the second i got into the power band and i had my power valve, past 8000rpm upwards to red line it was pulling all the way to 90mph!!! soooo much fun :) but as them bikes.... it broke :( was not looked after before it come to me
Russ you need to ride a ST1050 with ABS as this made the breaking better. I'm waiting till I'm 21 to get one of these as I'm only 17 with a full licence as I plan the TT600 to be my unrestricted bike at 19!
how do you upload videos at 2:30am and then get up and go work at 9am on a bike making sure learners stay relatively safe or do you have tube feeding you redbull in your lid?

I'm also one for not liking high centre of gravity on a bike (Pan 1300, Diversion 900, TDM900 amongst others) cos I'm only 5 feet 8. The balance and C.O.G is really well proportioned and I never consciously felt a problem.
Are you sure that's what ROSPA says? You have to have the rear brake covered at ALL times? I'd check on that with your senior examiner just to be sure. There will be times where you may need to change position of your foot. I'd imagine it also depends on the type of bike and design of the foot pegs along with the size of your feet. Will you let me know what they say please?
Funny enough, I was thinking about the wrath of the Elk meister when I wrote that lol. By top heavy, I actually mean when riding at very slow speeds like in car parks etc.
Thanks, agreed, the triple engine is excellent but it doesn't have the feel or growl of the V4. Looking for a nice tunnel to record the sound soon..

Ahh! I recognise the sound of that 1050 engine, used to own an Speed Triple also 2005 years model. Very nice bike, smooth as you say and also the breaks was so so. I belive they changed the Nissin calipers for Brembo the year after.
I like when you say that the Tuono is like an 2-stroke lol! Thats kind of what im used to with my current KTM 990, can be a pain while riding in town but I love the instant throttle response while riding the twisties! As always, great video Russ! keep it up!

I am 6'1" and I had an older 955 sprint st...I had the pins and needles on it then tried a 2007 1050 st and found the same problem. I now own a Tiger 1050 and wow what a difference it makes. I would like a Tuono but for the type of riding I do it is not practical. Maybe they could put the v4 in a touring frame? lol Cheers
Sprint looks to be my next bike, Russ. So I was well pleased to see this upload! I expect there will be at least one or two vloggers salivating at this point too. Would you consider that it's a good choice for all year riding (given that I live in the North East and its a little wilder up here)?
They called it the VFR beater, especially in this second incarnation. Headlights are supposed to be it's weak point, so HID should help I guess.

Hi Russ, nice review - I always enjoy watching your vids! I love the look of the Tuono now. very nice job! BTW, I don't think there is a particular RoSPA requirement to cover the rear brake. I just got my RoSPA at bronze level and the examiner actually mentioned that I should move my foot off the rear brake when not needed.

The Sprint ST 1050 is 123 bhp not 119.5 bhp. You must have the figures for the previous version the Sprint 955i.

I will check with our Snr Tutor, ex West Mercia Police Advanced Instructor when I see him. My personal tutor was emphatic, and would ride up close behind me to check and pointed it out to me, especially on videos of my riding. I would change my foot position when the brake needed to be used, but was advised that was wrong and had to be covered at all times. I was told depending on the examiner and how important they considered it they may or may not take it into their marking consideration.

Hi Russ, Grant here from NZ great video as always! Is that a Schuberth C2 or C3 helmet you're wearing? I use the C3 at work and it's easily the best helmet I've ever worn. They're $1200 NZD here so are a bit too pricey for me!

Your friend was spot on with the Triumph brake travel/piston retraction issue. I'm having a similar problem with my SV, even after completely overhauling the calipers and master. I can only guess something is out of spec. Major PITA.
Went out after 31 yrs since riding a motorcycle & bought a triumph sprint 1999 .Yep its true about the pins & needles,hands going numb & mine went black.Started to relax soft grip on the handlebars with risers,grip the tank with the knees give stomach muscles a workout,things improved vastly. Good torque on the bike love riding it now
I really liked the sprint st, ok I've only just passed my test and already played on the tiger and street triple an loved them both. I am lookin at a Fazer 8 2013, also could you tell me which camera youve got cos I would love a headcam but not sure which?

I do love the white. But a matte pearl white with red glossy accents would be "ughhh" and it even fits better to the matte helmet. ;)
