Thanks for the posting .. brings back waves of nostalgia.. from 1970 to 1979 I drove trucks delivering antiques all across Italy to shops and private collectors .. did a trip average every three weeks .. loved it .. young man seeing all the wonderful Italian culture and mostly the amazing food .. lived like a prince .. 20 to 30 deliveries each trip from Turin to Sicily .. no sat nav then .. paper maps and your own grey matter .. no worries .. it’s how it was .. always Rome for customs clearance so that meant a couple of nights in the Porta Maggiore hotel with your truck in the customs compound while the antiquities experts perused your load .. great days and nights .. Europe Express .. Anglo Italian Express .. Keith Mallin Transport ..the early incarnation of Martinspeed with Jill and Reece .. and to smooth the way always a tea chest of silver plate teasets for the customs and 400 ciggies for the traffic cops 😂
I’m just watching this now as it came up on my UA-cam feed - some comments are saying Stoney Burke passed away, I’m sorry to hear that, he looked like a sound man RIP
My late dad did the continent in late 70s early 80s for carna. I went to Holland with him once. He got the first scania 142 carna got in 81. First in Ireland
@Seamus Burke they were really heading into the unknown back then, bad roads, bad trucks, no mobile fones. Real truckers for sure. Thanks for the info.
40+ years since this was aired, 20+ years since I started on the continent & I thought jayz not much has changed (apart from the physical roads - I can't imagine having to drive through Piccadilly Circus!) you still have the sweet talkin for the customs - where there is customs- truckstops, foreign food, feeling like an alien, monotony etc.
+lemonmeringue pie mate i m not being funny but i ve been driving for years between germany and uk i m afraid to say that over here service areas has almost nothing for truck drivers other than mc donald, burger king, kfc etc i just can t believe that how crap services are in uk, even in romania serbia, turkey , bulgaria they serve proper hot food but nothings here!!! no1 has respect here towards hgv driver, its my expierence what i learnt was in years, no offence!!
I hear you, just thank your lucky stars you don't have to come to Ireland. We dont have any bloody services for truckers. Cars can pull off the motorway and pop into cafés in towns and villages, most of whom have stopped truckers from doing so.
i have never been to ireland but what ur saying is really shocking england is bad enough for me i really don t want to imagine how its like in ireland its so said, i hope it gets better for all uk!! u have nice roads but except the services!!
The factory in Waterford he collected the sides of beef was Clover meats. It was a huge firm in its day. It was owned by the O' Meara family from Limerick who were huge exporters of both beef, pork and bacon.

How times have changed, now direct ferry services from Ireland to Europe and the new Dublin - Continental European ports of Zeebrugge and Rotterdam using mega ferries. Not forgetting the existing Irish routes to Northern France. These routes will by pass Brexit Britain and its pre EU paperwork

Obviously the footage is "digitized" (to use a very 1980's / 1990's term) or it wouldn't be on UA-cam!
